Corn Rows

Well it certainly is not enough for a corn maze, but we attempted to grow corn in our little garden this year. It didn’t yield, but it does make for a cool end of the season shot against a misty forest background.

The Promise

My phone was blowing up last night with all the notifications for an active Aurora in my area, alas our weather report was rain and wind. I took a chance about 11:15pm to just step outside, and while there was some cloud cover, the sky was glowing bright green! I quickly reset my lenses, grabbed my tripod and went outside. It took me a couple tries to find a spot where I could capture the incredible green glow in the sky. When I did, I ran in to get Len and Nikki, and out we headed to find a dark spot on the water. We ended up at Judges Row where I spent an hour and a half photographing the most magical sky dance I have ever seen! I totally could’ve stayed out all night, but my companions were tired. I now have about 146 amazing photos of the dance! Stay tuned, it’s a lot to go through for edits (and a bit overwhelming with beauty). For now, here is a promise of what’s to come!!

Here’s another beach shot with Nikki. She was about 18 months here and still working with recall, so if there was any chance of people being around, we would keep her on a long leash. As you can tell by the pull on her leash that she is really ready to be let go!

One of the techniques Erin wanted to learn was motion blur. What better place to practice than a moving carousel. While night time would definitely been ideal, you still can’t beat a good old fashioned ride moving anytime! That blur you see… it is intentional. Here’s to many more adventures my friend!

Fall Outside Reading

There are some moments in fall where you can sit outside for a half hour and just read a book. Yes, this is a posed photo to practice my self portrait challenge. I am working two ways of clicking the shutter: using camera self timer or my phone as a remote with snap bridge. The timer is nice in that it allows me to not have my phone in hand, but it is limited in number of shots and time to get set up. I could use interval shooting and may try that next week. I am also struggling with seeing so many photos of myself - glasses on? Glasses off? Close up or far away? This is definitely a learning curve for me. It is much easier to be behind the lens!!

Pink Explosion

On exploring the photos from the 2.5 hours I ran the camera on the 10/11th, I noticed specific colour pattern changes. I wished I’d ran the camera all night and had a second running a Timelapse as the night changed so much. On my shots, there seemed to be about 15-30 minutes of certain colours with about an hour of mostly green. Please see my previous posts for a link exploring the science behind the colours of an Aurora.

Flowers as Medicine

This beautiful purple flower seen blooming all along our highways and forests is Digitalis purpurea, more commonly known as “foxglove”. It is used to create the heart medication “digitalis”, and interestingly, is poisonous. I love how beautiful it graces our area this time of year. If you travel to North Vancouver Island, you’ll see fields of this purple beauty all along the way and may even see some bears munching on it!

Homalco Wildlife and Cultural Tours really excel at all things cultural. Janet, our cultural guide, added so many tidbits and full histories of the region. She words this incredible cedar hat the entire day and was easily spotted wherever we were. In this shot, she was explaining the history of a small village that was a key point in these waters and is being restored to show the history.

This is Mountain Sunstar was the one that started my love of shooting sunstars. Len and I drove up the mountain to a spot where we’d hoped to get ocean vistas, and by the time we got to where we were going the sun started to dip behind the mountain. I don’t think I even knew what settings to use at the time, all I know is it worked and I was hooked. I do think this will always be my favourite Sunstar shot even if I know there are things I would do differently now. Do you know where this is?
