"WOW, a grand view of the Parksville famous beach." - Edmond Leung, 2015 myPQB Story Contest

"Living in Victoria, when the kids were young and growing, our favourite vacations were camping trips around the Island.

While we camped at Miracle Beach, Gordon Bay, Goldstream, and Clearwater (Shawnigan Lake) campsites, most of our trips were to Parksville Qualicum Beach. We spent many sunny afternoons at Rathtrevor Beach.

The funny thing was we never got to camp there! Before reservations existed the park used to be so popular that the campsites were all snatched up by the locals, so we'd usually camp at Little Qualicum Falls and make day trips, most to Rathtrevor.

Finally, after all these years (around 20), after a thoroughly enjoyable stay at Tigh Na Mara, we got a long overdue treat. We got to spend the night right at the beach we've loved so much!" - Dave McFetridge, 2013 myPQB Story Contest

Beaches are for dog agility, right? Len and Rylee ran Nikki and Moose over the rocks. Nikki wasn’t quite sure of what she was to do at the start, but with some gentle coaxing by Len, she figured it out. When Len reached down to give her a pat she gave him a thank you kiss. Gotta love doggie thank you licks!

Just a Stare

Archive Shot 2022 Oct 02

One of my favourite things about going back to my archives is feeling the moments all over again. We followed this guy for awhile as he swam among the logs. I was ready that moment he stuck his head up. It was a bit difficult to get a shot with the harsh mid-day light, but there he was giving us a stare down.

"My Husband and I were staying at a Inn on Qualicum Beach, enjoying a wonderful weekend escape from the blistery, cold, winter nights of Edmonton. It was on a early sunny November morning, and with our blinds and patio door open, we were relishing the sights and sounds that traveled on the breeze through our ocean front getaway. Palm trees, green grass, and the light crashing of waves only steps away were a feast for our senses.

A moment later our perfect vignette was graced by a visit from the most enchanting and beautiful guest. She was pure white with black flecks. A female Snowy Owl landed lightly on our balcony banister and perching herself there, she looked right at us, right into our eyes. We did not move, we did not want to frighten her. After many captivating moments, she swooped gently down to the deck floor and walked towards our open patio door. Very curious, yet extremely cautious of this magnificent Snowy Owls actions, I rose slowly and closed the door. My Husband and I watched her in wonder for some time. After a while she flew down where driftwood lay on the beach and rested.

Excited about our encounter, we followed her to where she perched herself, I wanted to capture some beautiful memories of our enchanted guests visit. She allowed me to come close to her and as we looked into each others eyes I sensed her grace and beauty as I captured our unique introduction with my camera lens. The word beautiful came over my lips, a true sense of awe enveloped me!

There is a saying that when one photographs another, "the spirit stands still for the one it chooses". In contemplating all the legends, stories and beliefs I have heard about these elusive birds, the stories that stand most in my mind maybe the Greek Mythologies. I picture Athena with her favored mascot, an Owl, representing wisdom and wealth sitting on her shoulder.

In the 20 years of owning this lovely Inn, Claire and Robby had never seen a Snowy Owl in the area before. Out of concern they called North Island Wildlife Association in Combs who rescued and provided her the safe place she was searching for when she tried to enter our room. Sadly, shortly after she passed away. Our young Snowy Owl was too weak from malnourishment and exhaustion, she was too far from her Arctic home.

I want to thank this Non-Profit Wildlife Organization for the valuable role they play in the education, preservation and rescue of our wounded, orphaned and protected wildlife on Vancouver Island. It is good to know that you are just a phone call away.

Our stay at the Buena Vista Inn on Qualicum Beach was enchanting. We have found a unique place to fill our senses and hearts with the wonder of nature and rest from the demands of our bustling world. Vancouver Island is a wondrous sanctuary and partially due to the Residents and Business Owners of Qualicum Beach and Parksville and the great job they do in preserving and maintaining the areas natural beauty.

My husband and I and all nature lovers greatly appreciate the efforts put forth by all of you, so that the rest of us at home here in Canada and around the World, may share in these natural gifts. With this unique experience I feel I have been embraced by the area and we are now looking to call this our home." - Ann Marie Camilleri, 2012 myPQB Story Contest

Sandcut Falls

Favourites Series: Water Drops 💦

From the Archives Jan 2019

Nikon d850, 24-85 lens at 32mm, 1/4s, f/11, ISO 100

I’m including this throwback waterfall shot of Sandcut Beach which is between Sooke and Port Renfrew on Vancouver Island, not only because it is beautiful, but to talk about the adventure of getting to waterfalls. I have found there are very few waterfalls that are easily accessible from roads or even short paths (exception of Englishman River). This one is quite a downhill climb followed by a beach hike. Timing is everything with tides, as well. I have heard there is an easier way in, and if I am ever going to see this waterfall again it will need to be by that route or by boat. I would love to hear of any accessible waterfalls you know of that I can visit!

Making the Catch

Nikon z9, 560mm (NIKKOR Z 400mm f/4.5 VR SZ TC-1.4x), 1/250s, f/6.3, ISO 2800

Archive Shot 2022 Oct 02

I’m quite enjoying revisiting this Grizzly Bear Adventure from last October. I’m finding hidden gems tucked away in all the thousands of photos from that day. This shot more on the series of a huge male catching and eating his prize salmon. This one was taken early on when he just made the catch. It was so fun watching him make his way through branches and logs to chase down his meal.

Sibling Love

Nikon z9, 105mm (NIKKOR Z MC 105mm f/2.8 VR S), 1/500s, f/2.8, ISO 400

Throughput the day I ponder on what I want to post for the day. Some days, and weeks, I have a series I’m working on and other times I just go day by day. Today the light was completely flat, so rather than new photos I took a look back through shots I’ve taken in the last several weeks. This lovely shot of three of my grandkids popped out at me for the beautiful colours, but mainly for the image showing their love for one another. We are fortunate to see these three on almost a daily basis and hardly ever see or hear them arguing. They do, don’t get me wrong, but rarely. They seem to always be in sync. For this shot, I didn’t pose them only said, “Head over to the bridge” and this is what they did. Gotta love some old fashioned sibling love 💕

"The calm before the storm. Love walking the beaches of Parksville Qualicum Beach. Took this pic on Qualicum Beach on Wednesday October 12th before we were hit with 3 storms which never did end up as bad as expected." - Francine Redford, 2016 myPQB Story Contest

"Went to 694, excellent restaurant, last year and a bar on the beach after. The band was great. Left my purse by the dance floor and forgot it. A local turned it in to the manager and I was very relieved. Honest Qualicum Beach residents. That would never happen in Vancouver. Stayed at the Crown and the beds were unbelievably comfortable. Would love to return." - Terry Brooks, 2016 myPQB Story Contest

"This picture was the last photo my fiance and I took while we were on vacation to Vancouver Island this summer. I grew up on the island and finally got to show him around. We spent a week relaxing together, visiting family and friends, on a whale watching tour (my first time!), going to Horne Lake Caves, laying on the beach, and drinking wine by the ocean. This night was our last night. We said goodbye to my grandparents, my grandfather has dementia and this was my first time back since he had been accepted to a nursing home, and we decided to just relax together. We went to the Dingy Dock Pub and tried to soak as much as we could in before heading back to Edmonton. I remember just feeling at peace." - Rachael Bosch, 2015 myPQB Story Contest

Nana’s Photographic Tales: Pink Explosion

Nikon z9, 14mm, 15 sec, f/2.8, ISO 500

What is so fascinating about photographing Auroras is how quickly colours change moment to moment. In this case there were merely a few minutes between colour changing from brilliant green exploding into pink.
