(I'm ridiculously far behind in posting my 365's)

Annually over the Father's Day weekend, our town swells in numbers because of the 500+ entries for the "Seaside Cruizers" (that's how THEY spell it) 3-days of events for vintage car and truck buffs. Due to the pandemic's travel ban it was again cancelled. Fortunately for those of us who live here, all the local classic vehicle owners got together and did their usual parade. The parade goes right by our home so I managed to photograph at least about 30 or so of the vehicles.

This is the event that Oprah Winfrey named as as one of the 10 best things to do on Father’s Day.

Slow Down Night

Nikon z9, 45mm (24-70mm f/2.8G), 60 Dec, f/11, ISO 100

I took Erin out and taught her how to shoot long exposure shots. I haven’t done these for awhile and loved every second! I think Erin is hooked, too. Next time I’ll wear my water boots and get right in those little waves.

Morning Highlights

Nikon z9, 150mm (NIKKOR Z 70-200mm f/2.8 VRS), 1/640s, f/2.8, ISO 100

This morning’s light was really lovely, so I practiced a bit with highlight metering [(•*)]. I don’t use this often as it tends to give darker images than I gravitate to, but today’s light was a nice way to practice. Here our girl is again (I swear this year is the year of Nikki haha), looking at reflections in the window.

January Golf in BC?

You bet! And, it was wonderful! My friend and I played a fun 18 hole round at our club, Pheasant Glen, today. We had several moments of sunshine, I even had my coat off a few times, and the course is in great shape with even some roll. Life can’t get much better than this in our beautiful province.

This is only one side of the overall winning sculpture, created by Susanne Ruseler and Sue McGrew in the double category.

Every year Master sculptors from all around the world participate in Parksville’s annual competition. The sculptures are created in July and go on display (this year) only until August 21st. This year's theme was the Roaring 20's to be interpreted in any manner at all. There were a number of really unique interpretations. I enjoy attending every year and highly recommend taking it in if on Vancouver Island from mid July through to the 3rd week in August.

I also have a 'new addition' on my website which I talk about in today's post.

I followed this little one around for awhile hoping to get a full on face shot. He/she was a bit shy, but it was fun to find this shot with abstract reflections in the water. Happy Remembrance all. May we always value our veterans.

Snow Series White on White

Nikon z9,

I don’t know what is trickier: shooting in snow, or shooting a fast-moving dog after throwing the ball and then grabbing the camera to get her photo? At any rate, here’s a little fun series of playing ball in the snow with Nikki.

Moody Highlight Metering

Nikon z9, 200mm (NIKKOR Z 70-200mm f/2.8 VRS), 1/5000s, f/8, ISO 320

I’ve been working with highlight metering this week and tried it yesterday with King Tide waves off Kinkade Road Beach. It was a fairly dark day, and I had a super fast shutter speed going. These shots are definitely different than when I use centred metering, but I do like the play of light off sand and tips of waves.

Sharing another shot of the King Tide off Qualicum Beach last week. It’s amazing how quickly colour leaks out of a day with over cast skies. This shot was done with highlight metering but lightened some for clarity.

Archive Shot 2022 Oct 02

It was really hard to spot this guy making his way up the river tucked under an overhang. Of course it is a great place for fish to be, so it makes sense this is where he’d hunt for food. I definitely had to pull up the shadows in post production to see these details, but what a cool experience to watch him work the waters.

Rocks and Water

Favourites Series: Rocks and Water

From the Archives July 2018

Nikon d7500, 85mm, 1.6sec, f/11, ISO 100

Of course my favourites series must include a section on rocks! This geology girl will always have an affinity with rocks. When there are rocks with fuzzy water - what could be better? This shot was taken back when I was teaching myself how to shoot long exposure shots. I spent a lot of time right down in the ocean that year with my little crop sensor Nikon d7500. Still a great little camera to teach grandkids on. Maybe they’d like to go crawl around down at the beach with me?

Making the Catch

Nikon z9, 560mm (NIKKOR Z 400mm f/4.5 VR SZ TC-1.4x), 1/250s, f/6.3, ISO 2800

Archive Shot 2022 Oct 02

I’m quite enjoying revisiting this Grizzly Bear Adventure from last October. I’m finding hidden gems tucked away in all the thousands of photos from that day. This shot more on the series of a huge male catching and eating his prize salmon. This one was taken early on when he just made the catch. It was so fun watching him make his way through branches and logs to chase down his meal.

Submitted by Sasha Redmann to the 2012 myPQB Story Contest: "My boyfriend is from Parksville. We now live in Prince George, BC. We have a three year old boy. We took him for a visit to see his grandparents in Parksville. One day, we took him to Parksville Beach and he had sooo much fun. All he wanted to do was run and jump in the waves. It was such a hot, beautiful summers day. Of course, we had to stop for fries and gravy at the beach concession stand. Our little boy misses it dearly, He often tells us, "I want to go see Grandma on the Island". Melts our hearts!! Love that place!!!!"

Beaches are for dog agility, right? Len and Rylee ran Nikki and Moose over the rocks. Nikki wasn’t quite sure of what she was to do at the start, but with some gentle coaxing by Len, she figured it out. When Len reached down to give her a pat she gave him a thank you kiss. Gotta love doggie thank you licks!

ODE TO OCEANSIDE by Andre & Vaysha Hirsch Todorovich (2012 myPQB Story Contest)

My Soul-mate is an Island girl,

and I, her transplanted man.

She whisked me away

from the density of an eastern city-land.

Here in Oceanside, she revealed to me

Her divine inspirations,

Antidote to my land-locked woes

My soul expanding elations.

Tides recede, strolling for kilometres

Across the ocean floor,

Toward horizons with no sky-scrapers

Where Island eagles soar.

Treasures of seashells and sand-dollars

Are currency in hand,

Found in patterns of ocean currents

Forming ripples in white sand.

An estuary of flourishing birds,

A language I understand;

Calling me home to an ocean-swept

Wild, wooded land.

Spruce and pine with natural headiness,

The air here is a tonic;

Amidst the seaward seals, forest deer

Winged-flight symphonic.

Colossal mountain range unifies

With a wall of rising peaks,

Sheltering tranquil over the home

And hearth that we all seek.

Where sea is a highway for kayak,

Paddle-board, and sail-boat;

Bearing aloft smiling waves

Young and old faces, where dreams float.

While vintage cars plume dynamic colours

Down period-piece avenues.

Island time is set to lifestyle

Of family relations, Old World values.

Oceanside signature:

sand-bars, tidal-pools, rainforest paradise.

Panoramic playground of rare jewels

The Milky Way starry skies.

Twisted arbutus, deep roots run

Rocky over a millennia’s travelling;

Like standing historic upon the flowing

Crags of an exotic, ancient unravelling.

Sunrises, sunsets, painting skies

With azure, golden burnished hours.

ouring gardens, soothing sanctuaries,

Lane-ways of blossoming wild flowers.

Farmer’s produce of organic nurture

Teeming with Island-grown sustainability.

Artisans of West Coast culture

Creating visions in eco-nobility.

All along our coast-line stretches

Beaches of fondest family memory.

Holding hands in this place holds romance

Of old-fashioned reverie.

Where childhood still plays innocent,

Where heritage is hand-crafting;

Here breathes open air, Oceanside

Hand-carved sand-castles everlasting!

Congratulations Erin!

Nikon z9, 115mm, 1/50s, f/2.8, ISO 100

Congratulations to my wonderful friend and student, Erin, on accomplishing a year of wonderful photographic challenges. Erin came to me in the beginning of 2022 asking to embrace photography. This led to an amazing year of adventures, lessons, laughter, a few tears along the way, and hundreds of amazing images! We spent a lovely celebratory day at Buchart Gardens yesterday - never say never - photographing flowers, gardens, people, dogs, hidden treasures and each other. It was yet another fun day together and I can hardly wait for more. Let’s go!!
