Twist this little pebble in sunlight and deep peacock blues flash from deep inside it.
The molten rock that formed it cooled and crystallized into alternate stacked layers with two different compositions. They produced the iridescence - or 'schiller' - by multilayer interference.

Upper Antelope Canyon is one of two slot canyons on Navajo land east of Page, Arizona. There are multi-layer sandstones with various colours and shades, that through erosion have resulted in different shapes. This photograph was taken in a narrow slot looking up the canyon, with some parts sun-lit while other parts in the shadows. The multi-layer sandstones of various colour tones provide captivating wavy features.
The green dock beetle's breeding season is from March to October. There are 2 to 4 broods per year, with the last brood hibernating as an adult. The female lays over 1,000 eggs, laying them in clusters of 20 to 45 on the underside of the food plant's leaves. The eggs are oval in shape, and are cream to yellow, turning orange prior to hatching. After about 3 to 6 days, the larva hatches from the egg. It varies in color from greenish gray to dark brown. Its body is segmented, and will reach a length of 8 mm. Young larvae will drop to the ground if disturbed while feeding, while older larvae secrete a substance which repels competitors from eating the food plant leaves. After three instars, the larva pupates in a burrow about 2 cm underground. The adult emerges 6 to 9 days later.
A multilayer composed of chitin layers alternated with layers which also contain melanin is responsible for the green colouration (this phenomenon is known as structural colour). The development has been investigated using advanced imaging techniques, showing that the multilayer forms during pupation and schlerotisation.

ai+ multilayer graphic and manipulation
A couple of standard SOOC shots from my archives manipulated and collaged along with added graphic and drawing elements. A return to a form not employed for a few years. The title was pulled from the random text elements in the image. I take a great deal of my inspiration from the techniques and thoughts of the classic Dada-ists and Surrealists of the 20th century.

Music Link: Brian Eno, "Kurt's Rejoinder" - from his album "Before and After Science". Kurt Schwitters was one of the most influential of the Dada "Anti-Artists" of his time. Eno takes a pirated recording of a Kurt Schwitters performance of completely non-sensical but rhythmically sophisticated syllables from his "Ur Sonate" and adds his own mash-up of words, music and imagery.
