A multi-agency U.S. delegation including representatives of the Departments of State, Justice, Homeland Security, and Defense met with civil society representatives at the United Nations in Geneva one day before the U.S. presentation to the UN Committee Against Torture. The United States considers civil society consultations crucial to the process of implementing our obligations under the Convention Against Torture, as well as other human rights obligations and commitments. A Virginia National Guard Soldier of the 189th Multi-Role Bridge Company directs a Common Bridge Transporter as it lowers a bay of the Improved Ribbon Bridge the company constructed during a training exercise June 7, 2014, at Fort A. P. Hill. A part of the 276th Engineer Battalion, 91st Troop Command, the Bowling Green-based company participated in various exercises during their two-week annual training at Fort A.P. Hill while being evaluated by active duty Army raters. The Soldiers were rated not only on their individual warrior tasks, but also on Sapper drills and the construction of bridges in two different scenarios: one with a Dry Support Bridge, and the other with an Improved Ribbon Bridge. The starry sky looks great as the sun fades beneath the horizon, and the contrail in the distance adds to the sky too. Then in the dark ground we find Chris running around with large LED snakes - blue and green, giving a smoky look over the ground.
The South Carolina National Guard’s 125th Multi-Role Bridge Company, deployed from Abbeville, S.C. is prestaging equipment and rehearsing their plan of flood-response operation that included offloading large rafts from the Carroll Ashmore Campbell Marine Complex in Georgetown, S.C., to be joined together to make a larger raft with room to fit a commercial truck or other priority vehicles, which would then be ferried by boat to the other side of the river, Sept. 23, 2018. The 125th MRBC deployed 102 Soldiers to Georgetown, S.C. to work on a secondary plan of action in anticipation of possible flooding where the Highway 17 “Ocean Highway” bridges converge at Waccamaw and Great Pee Dee Rivers in the Winyah Bay area. The latest update on expected flood levels in the area is 10 to 12 feet when the water is expected to be at its highest. There are approximately 2,200 South Carolina National Guard Soldiers, 40 Airmen and 100 State Guard on duty as well as 28 Soldiers and Airmen from Pennsylvania and Alaska National Guard and 8 troops from the New York National Guard and 100 Tennessee National Guard assisting response efforts from the impacts of Hurricane Florence.
