The southern gateway or the Amar Singh Gate was originally known as 'Akbar Darwaza' and was reserved for Mughal emperor Akbar and his personal entourage. Shah Jehan renamed it after the brave Rao Amar Singh of Jodhpur. According to the interesting anecdote, Amar Singh slew Salabat Khan, the chief treasurer of Shah Jehan in front of the emperor. Then he leapt with his horse over the high walls of the fort. The horse died with the fatal jump and Amar Singh was arrested and put to death. However, his courage won the admiration of the emperor and the gate was renamed as Amar Singh Gate in his honor. A red sandstone statue of his horse was erected at the very spot where he died.
The gate shares architectural traits with the Delhi Gate such as having a drawbridge over the moat, dangerous diversions at the entrance and a high ramp paved with bricks. There are two octagonal towers on its either side. The most imposing structure here is the Naubat Khana surrounded by pillared pavilions. The bastions are not very impressive and it not as profusely decorated as some of the other structures in the fort. Yet, the oblong and arched panels in the lower portions are adorned with multi-colored glazed tiles, mainly in yellow, green, blue and white colors. Panels on the upper portion are plain. Bastions are crowned by piered chhatri with a domed cupola and an inverted lotus. The traces suggest that these cupolas were also covered with glazed tiles once.

I made these socks a while ago. they have been washed a couple of times already. I used the method described in the self published book "Crazy Heels and Toes" by Mary Ann Beatie. The pattern for the cuff is adapted from a pattern stitch distributed in the Lion Brand Newsletter.

38th Whittlesey Straw Bear 2017
In Whittlesea, from when no one quite knows, it was the custom on the Tuesday following Plough Monday (the 1st Monday after Twelfth Night) to dress one of the confraternity of the plough in straw and call him a 'Straw Bear'. A newspaper of 1882 reports that "... he was then taken around the town to entertain by his frantic and clumsy gestures the good folk who had on the previous day subscribed to the rustics, a spread of beer, tobacco and beef".
The tradition fell into decline at the end of the 19th century, the last sighting being in 1909 as it appears that an over-zealous police inspector had forbidden 'Straw Bears' as a form of cadging.
Revival
The custom was revived in 1980 by the Whittlesea Society, and for the first time in seventy years a 'Straw Bear' was seen on the streets accompanied by his attendant keeper, musicians and dancers, about 30 in all. Various public houses were visited around the town as convenient places for the 'Bear' and dancers to perform in front of an audience - with much needed refreshment available.

just having a little fun with repeating flash of sb800 on nikon d300 either that or trying to clone myself :) The exposure data is listed, however this was shot in a darkend room minimal ambient light. flash rpt set to 1hz with 4 cycles. I'm wearing a black long sleve tight shirt. the power was set to 1/16 I believe either that or 1/32. The goal was not to have myself on top of myself. Took about 10 tries to get this. Not perfect but close enough for my amusement.
I've used the Poster Edges filter here once again to bring out the details in the rope and create a blurry stylised background.

Following Seth Sandler's instructions on his blog I built a multi-touch box. The rig detects and tracks multiple fingerpoints contacting the surface as shown in the image here. I'm using a Microsoft LifeCam NX-6000 webcam taped, facing-up to the bottom of the box. A piece of white paper is taped to the top of the box from which you can slide your finger tips along. Seth provides all the binaries to make the system work on an ordinary Windows box. A Lenovo X61 Tablet PC is shown here running the demo_smoke application that Seth provides. Loads of fun! Next up it's time to build a full-sized, multi-touch table.
