These images are from a group of slides I took while climbing Mt. Hood in Oregon sometime around March or April of 1981.

The only thing that was done to the images was the removal of some lint and cropping, as for the almost black sky that is how it looked even though when the images were taken it was around 10 or 11 am. My friend Henry and I started our climb from the Timberline ski lodge. It took about 8 hours to complete the ascent and descent of the Mountain.

Mt. Rainier National Park, Longmire Area

Pierce County, Washington

Our recent Pacific Northwest trip included an all-too-brief visit to Mt. Rainier National Park, specifically, the Longmire area. Due to limited time, road construction, and traffic, we didn't go on to Paradise, as we had hoped to do. We had an enjoyable lunch at National Park Inn and walked the Trail of the Shadows.

James Longmire operated Longmire Medical Springs Resort from 1890 until his 1897 death, attracting visitors to his property's warm springs. His son, Ecaine, then ran the business until his own death in 1915, when the Longmire property was sold to Mt. Rainier National Park (created 1899). The 5th U.S. national park, 97% of Mt. Rainier NP's 369.35 square miles is preserved as wilderness. Park focal point Mt. Rainier, a 14,411-foot stratovolcano, is the highest peak in the Cascade Range and has over 25 glaciers.

There are overlying layers of historic designations at Longmire. In 1987, three Longmire buildings were listed on the National Register of Historic Places and designated a National Historic Landmark (87001338): 1927 Community Building, 1928 Administration Building, and 1929 Service Station. They are recognized as outstanding examples of National Park Service Rustic architecture. Second, all the Longmire area, with 58 contributing buildings, became an NRHP historic district in 1991 (91000173). Finally, all of Mt. Rainier National Park was listed on the National Register of Historic Places and named a National Historic Landmark in 1997 (97000344).

Looking back to the summit of Mt. Monroe (elevation 5,372') from the trail leading to the summit of Mt. Washington. When we hit the summit of Mt. Monroe, we were in the clouds and whipping winds, any views were only a dream. As we began our descent of Monroe, the clouds cleared and like a mirage, the entire 360 degree view unfolded before our eyes!

After the Badlands we went to see Mt. Rushmore - it is amazing. We were blessed with bluebird skies, too. Hope you are enjoying some of our trip!
