Henry Horton State Park - Maury County, Tennessee
I took a hike today at the Henry Horton State Park. I had an entourage of mosquitoes that bugged me the entire time. I must remember to apply some bug spray on my next outing. At the end, I noticed a couple of dragon flies. In between bites, I managed to get this shot. It was entertaining watching the dragon flies pick off the mosquitoes in mid air. A couple of times, the dragon flies came very close to me to eat the mosquitoes that were flying around my head. It appears that I led the mosquitoes into a death trap.

The word "mosquito" is Spanish for "little fly," and its use dates back to about 1583 in North America (Europeans referred to mosquitoes as "gnats"). Mosquitoes belong to the order Diptera, true flies. Mosquitoes are like flies in that they have two wings, but unlike flies, their wings have scales, their legs are long and the females have a long mouth part (proboscis) for piercing skin.
Took a break from attempts to eat me alive. Apparently isn't bothered in the least by bug repellent.
An eye-opener to the uninitiated like me brought up on Airfix kits! Quite a bit of heavy duty pipework. Wonder what it all does? Somehow the whole engine mounting area and frames don't look anywhere near strong enough to take a Merlin but obviously they are! How do they keep the two engines in sync? Host of questions!
"A group of neuroscientists have finally isolated a unique type of nerve cell that makes us itch and only itch."
Well good, now maybe they can figure out how to make us not itch at all. That would be nice.

Being the winter (dry) season in Zimbabwe when we went there on holiday, the insect population was much reduced, I was told. Fortunately that includes mosquitos and resulted in me sustaining only about 8 bites. Here's a mosquito showing off his formidable drilling gear. Why do they hold their back legs up in the air like that sometimes?
My Mosquito that I built then lost. I am pretty sure that I built one as a youngster in the 1970's so there's a certain nostalgia about this model for me. This took place at the monthly NARHAMS launch in Mt. Airy, MD.
A mosquito that just didn't give a sh.. about me wearing blue jeans...

May to September really sucks up here for Mosquitoes, black flies, horse flies and sand flies. The only saving grace is despite the billions of mosquitoes none of them appear to carry any diseases that are starting to become so prevalent down south, such as west nile. There are also no ticks or heart worm problems for the dogs. With climate change being what it is I imagine that will probably change some time in the future.
The sound of water running, the temperature and the silence were joyful not only for me, but for a lot of floating mosquitos that shared their site with us
Apparently they have a sharp straw (yellow-ish) which is normally hidden by that long bendy tube of a mouth.
No specific ID, but a fascinating looking creature, beautiful plumose antenna. If anyone can offer an ID I'd be very grateful.
This is the Mosquito River falls located in the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. This is one of three waterfalls located within a few hundred yards of each other.
I got bitten to buggery taking these last few photos by Asian tiger mosquitoes, and have spent all week swollen up and itching.
to the left of the frame is an old, disused railway line that is full of pools of stagnant water from the recent rains. The little bastards seem to thrive in there!
Bloody global warming, and it's pesky drawbacks!

Anopheles is a genus of mosquito (Culicidae). There are approximately 460 recognised species: while over 100 can transmit human malaria, only 30-40 commonly transmit parasites of the genus Plasmodium that cause malaria which affects humans in endemic areas. Anopheles gambiae is one of the best known, because of its predominant role in the transmission of the deadly species - Plasmodium falciparum.
Some species of Anopheles also can serve as the vectors for canine heartworm Dirofilaria immitis, the Filariidae Wuchereria bancrofti and Brugia malayi, and viruses like the one that is the cause of O'nyong'nyong fever. Mosquitoes in other genera (Aedes, Culex) can also serve as vectors of disease agents.
