Taken in Bridgeville Pa. I just jumped out of the van and started snapping. I'm lucky the occupants of the home right beside it didn't come out. I'll be putting bug bite salve on me the rest of the night.
Alastair Mackie, mosquitoes on board, edition of four, 2002
"The mosquitoes used to create this work came from the laboratory of Professor Robert Sinden of the Division of Cell and Molecular Biology at Imperial College London. Professor Sinden uses mosquitoes like these in his research on the malarial parasite. The artist was interested in how sculpture physically embodies its themes and in creating a tension between the formal object and the processes and materials used."

Toxorhynchites, also called "elephant mosquito", or "mosquito eater" is a cosmopolitan genus of mosquitoes. The genus includes the largest known species of mosquito, and it is among the many kinds of mosquito that do not consume blood. The adults subsist on carbohydrate-rich materials, such as honeydew, or saps and juices from damaged plants, refuse, fruit, and nectar.

the greatest fictional band ever, THE MOSQUITOS! Gilligan's Island, episode 48, December 9, 1965. "he's a loser (he's got rocks inside his head), he's a loser....." I of course wasn't born when this originally aired, but like most kids of the 70's I saw every one of them on afternoon TV after school, this was my favorite episode. There was a commonality of experiences kids of my generation shared, one of them was this show, because there were only 3 TV networks (heck, our antenna only got 2 of them!) so we all watched the same stuff. Your cultural touchstones were such that anyone who didn't get the joke was the exception, not the rule. Not the same now, there is so much available on TV, satellite, DVD, internet. Sometimes I wonder how anyone relates to anyone else. But I also see it allows people far apart physically to connect online based on interests they share...impossible when I was growing up. I remember staying up late at night and being able to tune in AM radio stations from far away places like Chicago, New York, Atlanta...that was exotic to a kid in nowheresville.
The Predatory Mosquito sucks plant sap and nectar, not blood. Their larvae are predator of other mosquito larvae.
This one appears to be a female as it does not have the plumose bushy antenna and was on the inside of a drum we collect water in. This drum is also a breeding ground for other mosquitoes therefore her larvae should have plenty to eat.

While males typically feed on nectar and plant juices, the female needs to obtain nutrients from a "blood meal" before she can produce eggs.
On this day the mosquitoes where particularly bad in Big Cypress National Preserve. I had to smear deet on every inch of exposed flesh so that they would not attack me. This ghost orchid has almost finished opening and is seen here with several mosquitoes perched on the flower.

"The Mosquito is the RAF’s first multi-role aircraft. It was built largely from plywood, which is one of the reasons why in the days before epoxy resins, they did not survive long after the war.
It is powered by twin Rolls Royce Merlin engines, the same liquid cooled 27 litre V12 that powered the Hurricane and Spitfire fighters, the Avro Lancaster bomber and the P51 Mustang."
