If you are not French, it’s likely you haven’t ever heard the word “Saintonge”, and have no clue what it means. If you are French, it’s probably the same thing. Unless, that is, you are a fan of Romanesque, in which case you know that Saintonge, that small region of France centered around the town of Saintes (hence the name), not far from the Atlantic Ocean, just North of Bordeaux... features the highest density of Romanesque churches of all the country!

I had never visited that area of France, and so in the middle of October 2021, I took that long overdue trip and stayed two weeks in Saintes, driving left and right daily to photograph all the most significant Romanesque churches... and unfortunately leaving out many others, as they are so thick on the ground!

Although, strictly speaking, the city of Angoulême is not part of Saintonge but of neighboring Poitou, I include photos of the beautiful cathedral of Saint Peter because my trip to Saintonge was largely inspired by a book, “Saintonge romane” (“Romanesque Saintonge”) –hence the collective title for this series–, published in the Zodiaque collection by the monks of La Pierre qui Vire abbey in Burgundy. This very famous collection of books on Romanesque was the brainchild of Dom Angelico Surchamp, who also was the photographer behind the gorgeous black-and-white pictures that did so much to contribute to the reputation of the books. As I was working on an essay for a college publication, I found a behind-the-scenes photo of Dom Angelico, perched high up in the air on a firemen’s ladder, scouting the façade of the Angoulême cathedral, and this image was so striking that I wanted to emulate it.

All of the sculptures on that façade are utterly admirable. This is the main lower tympanum, directly above the door. Who ever said artists from the Romanesque period ignored perspective?

Kiyomizu-dera (清水寺), known more fully as Otowa-san Kiyomizu-dera (音羽山清水寺) is an independent Buddhist temple in eastern Kyoto. The temple is part of the Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto (Kyoto, Uji and Otsu Cities) UNESCO World Heritage site.[1] (It should not be confused with Kiyomizu-dera in Yasugi, Shimane, which is part of the 33-temple route of the Chūgoku 33 Kannon Pilgrimage through western Japan.)

A tibetan monk I met on the way to Meili Snow Mountain. He followed his famaily to worship the Meili Snow Mountain, the tibetan people see the Meili Mountain like a holy mountain, they belive in that The Tibetan Gods live there. So, for a tibetan people, he must go around the mountain at least once in his whole life. A strong godliness in their everyone's heart. They moved me, and they made me shocked.

Mahagandhayon Monastery is one of the largest one in Mandalay. At times there are more than 3,000 monks living and studying here. At 10:30 every morning hundreds of monks wait in long queues for their Swan (meals). At the same time, hordes of tourists stand watching and photographing them - of course I am one of those.

Looking east down the 14c nave which continues into the chancel, probably once divided by a screen (now lost) instead of a chancel arch. Although high and lofty, there are no clerestory windows. The arcades are 15c . On either side of the chancel are the north chapel with organ & Feilding monuments www.flickr.com/gp/52219527@N00/LM43c94577 - to the south is the Skipwith chapel the resting place of Thomas Skipwith 1790 www.flickr.com/gp/52219527@N00/1546p3M998

A wall tablet tells us that the church was "restored at a cost of about £8000 by Mr (George) Street, the Architect, and was re-opened for public worship October 26th 1869. The Vicar and Parishioners desire to record their Gratitude to the family of the Earl of Denbigh and their friends, to the authorities of Trinity College and to all other friends who assisted them in the work also to Edward Wood Esquire of Newbold Revel, High Sheriff of Warwickshire for his munificence which enabled the parishioners to include the whole of their church in the restoration ... " The north aisle was partly rebuilt in during this time

Buddhism is widely followed in Nepal and is the second-largest religion after Hindhu.

Unlike any other countries, Nepal can be taken as example since both Hindu and Buddhists shared the same temples for worshipping and conduct respective practices.
