Using something called PWM (pulse-width modulation) the chip provides a variable output current matched to a clock frequency, depending on how much brightness is required - providing full current for only a fraction of each cycle.

Stanford’s Center for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics (CCRMA) presents its annual Modulations festival in San Francisco—an 8-hour marathon of sound art installations and live electronic music. The event begins with interactive and kinetic sound installations by Trimpin and his students; evolves into a sit-down concert of electronic music; and ends with a dance party, with performances by CCMRA artists and guest performers Wobbly and Sutekh.
Visitors, surrounded by four speakers, could walk up to this control panel and tweak knobs - reverb, delay, echo, modulation, etc., collaboratively creating audio grooves and soundscapes. Middle dial controlled the fundamental. Quite amazing.

In Your Car will feature two concurrent sound projects broadcasting on local frequencies, Park Park Revolution and Ping Modulation.
Park Park Revolution will be a composition “played” by cars parked in the lot surrounding the Geffen Contemporary. NPR will divide the Geffen lot into four sections, with each assigned to its own broadcast frequency. Directed into parking spaces, drivers will be instructed to tune in their radios and turn up their volumes to create a quadraphonic matrix of sound.
Under the canopy located at the Geffen entrance, Ping Modulation will pay homage to artist Robert Rauschenberg’s Open Score. For this project, NPR will outfit ping-pong tables with contact microphones and sound processors; as visitors match off in games of table tennis, the noise of their play will be fed to radio broadcasts that will transform their participation into sound art.

Das demografische Grübeln geht bereits lange vor Konzertbeginn los: Woraus setzt sich die grönemeyersche Fangemeinde eigentlich zusammen? Auf seiner aktuellen Tournee «Das Beste von Gestern bis Mensch» spielt er immerhin für ein Publikum von weit über 500 000 Menschen. Nun, es findet sich der leicht angegraute Popliebhaber aus alten «Das Boot»-Tagen neben der gutmütigen Industriekauffrau, der Musikpluralist im abgewetzten «Santana»-Shirt neben dem jugendlichen Fan.
Der Meister kennt sein Publikum. Er schmeisst sich sofort in Stadionrockpose, joggt flott über die ganze Bühnenbreite und schmettert seine schnörkellose Stahlrohrpoesie mit kehliger Stimme ins Stadionrund. Nach zwei Haudrauf-Rocknummern stimmt Grönemeyer eine balladeske Nummer an, bei der ihn sein Saxofonist und ein mehrköpfiges Streicherensemble begleiten. Als auf der Videowand schliesslich ein Fan in Grossaufnahme gezeigt wird, der einen «VFL Bochum»-Schal schwenkt, hebt Herbert sofort zu seiner legendären Zeile an: «Tief im Westen, wo die Sonne versinkt.» Ein erster Höhepunkt, den er mit der Modifikation einer weiteren Zeile nachdrücklich markiert: «Bist keine Weltstadt wie Zürich.» Im Hintergrund werkelt derweil Grönemeyers äusserst versierte Band, die ihn mit modernen Grooves und souveräner Popmusik begleitet, mal stampfend und funky, mal entrückt und besinnlich. Wave Modulation is part of Jim Campbell’s “Ambiguous Icons” series, which explores the “edge condition” between legibility and abstraction. At what point do the pulsing lights stop representing a wave and become pure abstraction, and vise-versa? The image gradually changes its speed over a 20-minute period, going from real time to a still image, layering the element of time on the visual experience. As a result, at any given moment the image is more-or-less legible as a crashing wave; our perception shifts between the transience of real time and the eternal nature of “still time.”

In this somber still life of a cluttered Victorian interior, well-worn yet once-precious objects have been rendered so meticulously that the artist's brushstrokes are barely discernible. Harnett's exquisitely subtle tonal modulations and his ability to differentiate textures make this painting a tour-de-force of artistic illusionism. Such trompe l'oeil art gained popularity in late nineteenth-century America, reflecting a fin-de-siècle preoccupation with mortality and the fleeting rewards of material wealth.
Historically, such a vanitas still life would have incorporated traditional symbolic elements such as a skull, an hourglass, or a snuffed-out candle as unmistakable reminders of death. Harnett's allusion to human life is more subtle: well-thumbed volumes of Dante, Shakespeare, and Tasso; a lamp; the burnt, broken matchsticks; the Meerschaum pipe and spilled ashes; the piccolo and the sheet music are emblematic references to the five senses. These diverse elements, arranged in a highly unstable composition, all seem in danger of imminent collapse.

The Seasons, the four canvasses of Poussin's late period now in the Louvre, are an even more extreme personal statement than the 'Landscape with Diana and Orion'. All Poussin's severity and pessimism seem to have disappeared in these paintings, to be replaced by a fusion of all the poetical leanings in his nature. They are the supreme expression, not in this case of mind over eye, but of praise for the beauty and grandeur of nature, now ordered by man, and now defeating man. Spring is luxuriant, Summer a fecund harvest, Autumn the gathering of mellow grapes and Winter the terrible deluge in which all mankind is overwhelmed and destroyed.
These pictures exist on a complex series of levels, and even the most unscholarly spectator must be aware that Poussin was trying to balance moods and ideas in a much more subtle and intricate way than usual. Firstly, the pictures are a sequence, and they are hung in this way in the Grande Galerie of the Louvre. Spring is cool in tone, Summer and Autumn are warm, and Winter is cold. Even this obvious modulation of tones has its own rhythm. In all but Winter man is seen in harmony with nature, especially in Spring, surely one of the most perfect evocations of Paradise since the subject was attempted by fifteenth-century Netherlands' painters.

Designed for studio and live performance setups, the Nektar SE49 is a full-sized 49-note velocity-sensitive MIDI controller keyboard. A completed ring modulator that had been in the works for a while. I had issues with the power supply I chose. I used a voltage divider for a +/- 9 volts or so, so the ground wasn't really ground. For some reason the switchmode HP laptop supply would shut down if the ground pin on the AC cord was grounded to equipment that it was connected to. (At least that seemed to be the fix, cut the ground)
The pedal features a carrier null pot, a ring modulation level pot, a 3 way frequency range switch, and a HF cut switch. The carrier frequency is set with the pedal mechanism. This is another 565PLL Anderton circuit.

The aim of this project is to control the speed of a fan with a control panel in Second Life. To control the motor, a pulse width modulation (PWM) powers the fan. With this method, the speed will be controlled by the mean value of the signal, depending of its duty cycle.
