I am running a seven night, landscape photography northern lights workshop in Lofoten, Norway 7th-14th Nov 2019 £1,495. Click the link for more details.

Finally I have managed to edit an image since returning from Lofoten last Thursday. A couple of one day workshops and lots of admin duties have prevented me from sitting down at my computer and going through my images with a fine eye but now that I have, I am loving looking at what I captured and the long process in editing some images.

So here is an image that I had not taken before prior to my visit to Lofoten last week. The conditions at dusk were lovely and despite a lack of colour in the sky, the soft colour palette of everything bar the red fisherman's cabins suits me just fine.

FOUR DAY LAKE DISTRICT AUTUMN WORKSHOP

Tues 31st October - Fri 3rd November 2017 £795

www.melvinnicholsonphotography.co.uk/product/lake-distric...

This is a fantastic location and one that I visited for the very first time today with my good friend Tony Higginson after wanting to find it for a couple of years or so now. Banishead Quarry has a waterfall (approx 80ft) that drops into the clear waters of below.

There's quite a difficult and dangerous climb down the side of the steep banking to reach the water's edge but if you're prepared to risk it, the reward awaits. The colours in the rocks are just amazing. Reds, yellows, oranges, greens, blues, they're all here. It's a really beautiful place to visit and it's only around a couple of miles from the car too.

I hope you all like it and feel free to SHARE and as always thank you for doing so.

Firstly, the colour of the water is real and genuine. I have seen similar colour waters both in New Zealand (Tekapo) and the Canadian Rockies (Moraine Lake) but they're both lakes, this, however, is a river that runs 137km in length, 95 km is flowing in Slovenia and the remaining 42 km runs into Italy.

I stopped off at the river today while in the area and the colour is at its most vibrant in the spring and autumn, so right now is the perfect time for me to see it and shoot it. This particular shot was taken from a roadside bridge, which allowed me to stand directly over the river itself, creating a wonderful composition from an aerial perspective.

There was a fair amount of water rushing down through the Soca Gorge due to recent rainfall and the sound was surprisingly deafening despite its gentle appearance. This part of Slovenia (the area around Bovec which is its neighbouring town) is seriously stunning, and if you follow the river upstream, you will start to ascent the almighty Vrsic Pass, which raises up to 1,600 metres at its peak.

I could never tire of sLOVEnia

Sunset Over Falasarna, Crete Greece

Falasarna is a seascape photographer's paradise with high cliffs, lots of coastal rock sections to photograph, and a gorgeous sandy beach to boot. What's not to love about that?

On this particular morning (after just a couple of hours sleep), I ventured into the main city of Chania to photograph the harbour, the lighthouse and the buildings in the area before it got busy after breakast.

Taken on my recent visit to the Canadian Rockies last Sunday when I drove 90 minutes north to Abraham Lake. It was incredibly cold (-39°c) and reasonably busy although on arriving an hour or so before sunrise, there were only a couple of other cars parked up by the roadside but within five minutes of us arriving, a dozen others arrived. News of my visit must have spread quickly, ha, ha.

So I wandered down onto the ice, complete with micro-spikes on the bottom of my snow boots for grip. Trying to find a section of ice that had perfectly formed methane bubbles was tough but I eventually settled on this shot. It lent itself perfectly to portrait format although I opted to shoot several images focusing on various parts of the scene followed by focus stacking them in Photoshop CC.

I think it worked out rather well. What do you think?

I visited this wonderful observatory during the week with a friend of mine and it made for a fantastic subject to shoot at night.

The lights in the distance are Bristol but considering that this location is situated in the heart of the city, light pollution was reasonable. I used a head torch to light the building during the thirty seconds the shutter was open and this really lifted the image for me.

While running my workshop in the Dolomites last October, I ventured to a place that I had not been able to reach the previous year as the cable cars close down around the end of the first week in October.

So I took my five lovely clients up to the summit of the Seceda, a remarkable 8,200ft mountain range, to capture the mid-morning light. On arriving at the gondola station, we were informed that snow had fallen overnight and that it was sub-zero temperatures on top. So six €32 tickets were purchased and we boarded the large gondola to the mid-way station to board a smaller gondola. The views up there were staggering.

Stepping out from the gondola station onto the freshly fallen snow while the views all around were bathed in lovely light was just magical. Yes, it was a tad chilly but when the clouds rolled in and started to swirl around the peaks, it became very atmospheric.

It was well worth enduring the cold temperatures but on the flip side, we got to enjoy a hot chocolate and lunch in the summit restaurant. Have a marvellous Monday evening everyone

Five Night Assynt & Inverpolly Photography Workshop/Tour 18th-23rd November 2018 £650 / £795

melvinnicholsonphotography.co.uk/product/assynt-inverpoll...

On arriving at Loch Assynt this afternoon, the heavens opened intensively and whilst it is very difficult to shoot in such conditions, I knew that the background would disappear in a blanket of rain, therefore, isolating the island and having it steal the limelight.

Loch Assynt has a few of these tree islands and in this kind of conditions, look simple, elegant and beautiful. The whole region of Assynt looks quite simply amazing and the autumnal colours are stunning. Lots of reds, oranges, yellows, and greens present.

WOW, WOW, WOW. I thought I knew Australia until I recently ventured back for ten days at the end of May. Hell, I even spent nearly a year backpacking around just some part of the country way back in 2003-04 and I thought I knew pretty much what it had to offer, that is until I started discovering some utterly magical locations in Queensland.

Here's a photo I captured of the gorgeous Morans Falls, an 80 metre waterfall that drops down into the valley floor of Morans Creek in a subtropical rainforest. This place is so high that the views ahead are staggering. It only took me and my good friend Alina perhaps 45 minutes to arrive here but oh my, the walk is more than worth it wouldn't you agree?.

I set up the camera on the tripod and positioned it to include this small but perfectly formed waterfall coming in form the bottom left corner after which is simply disappears over the edge. That's quite a sight I can tell you. I loved the lush foliage that was all around me and the trees were just amazing. The wildlife wasn't bad too either.

I hope you enjoy looking at this scene as much as I did photographing it. Have a great Sunday evening everyone :D

Captured en-route to Glencoe last November to run a workshop. I saw this beautiful boat just floating motionless and thought that I simply had to stop and photograph it. It wasn't until I looked at the image on my computer screen at home when I noticed the heron on the far right hand side. What a wonderful addition to an already stunning scene.

This amazing early thirteenth-century castle was founded by the construction of a large curtain-wall that enclosed much of the island. At a later date, the castle is said to have been garrisoned. All I know is that on that wonderful Saturday afternoon last November 19th, the sky turned stormy with huge swathes of water lashing down in the distance and it was very quickly heading my way.

I could not let an opportunity pass by to capture such a fantastic sky, so full of drama and excitement. The following day I would go on to witness and photograph the legendary Fogbow on Rannoch Moor. I was most certainly blessed that weekend.

I have only two places left for this November's four day workshop to Glencoe. 16th-19th November 2017 £795.00

FOUR DAY LAKE DISTRICT AUTUMN WORKSHOP

Tues 31st October - Fri 3rd November 2017 £795

www.melvinnicholsonphotography.co.uk/product/lake-distric...

Photography is many things to many people and often many things to me too. Sometimes you simply want to capture a moment in time almost as a record shot which is fine other times though you want to capture on camera a feeling or an emotion or try to convey what you felt when stood there looking up at the sky.

This image of a gorgeous misty morning at Holme Fell in the Lake District back on a cold wintery morning in January earlier this year during a workshop that I was leading, is one such image that for me conveys exactly how I was feeling. The fierceness of the sun being held back by the softness of the mist among the three trees around the tarn was a joy to photograph.

This is the sort of image I intend on capturing more this coming winter. I hope you all like it and it is available as a print should anyone wish to purchase one. Contact me for more details.

A brand new edit of one of the most iconic river stretches anywhere in the UK and for me, my favourite section of river anywhere in the UK. Glen Brittle River has it all, too many waterfalls to list, plunge pools, underwater arches, and aqua green water all set against one of the most dramatic backdrops of the Black Cuillin.

This gorgeous little double waterfall is perfectly positioned to allow Waterpipe Gully to feature heavily in the background while the impressive terrain surrounds me. If there's a more impressive river view in the UK, I'd love to know it.

Despite my love for Skye though, I have decided to leave it off my 2020 workshop list if just to give me a rest from the beautiful island. Sometimes in order to keep yourself motivated to photograph a location, you must rest it for a while and that's what I shall be doing with Skye throughout 2020. I shall continue to run my Harris & Lewis and Assynt workshops though.

Sunrise, Over Owler Tor, Peak District

This image was captured on the final day of my four days spent shooting the Peak District recently. This image was taken at 5.38am so it was an early start, and the brisk 15 minute yomp up to the amazing 350 million year old gritstones of Over Owler Tor paid off when the pre-dawn colours started intensifying with each passing minute.

I had spotted this viewpoint the night before when shooting the sunset and sleeping in my makeshift campervan complete with mattress and camping stove (Merc Vito minibus minus all the seats) was a great idea.

Once I had sized up my exact position among the gritstones, it was just a matter of standing and waiting for the magic to happen.

I know, I know, you've all seen this wonderful wooden house at Sakrisoy nestling in the shadows of Mount Olstind before but not from me and that's important to me.

There are certain viewpoints that are so good, that it's almost criminal not to photograph them. Do I get as much of a kick out of photographing the iconic locations? Perhaps not as much and I know a lot of people feel the same way but I know a lot of people who do because they have a great opportunity to compare their image with the millions online to see if it stacks up against the others.

Personally, I like to find something new and capture it well. It's not enough to capture something new if the quality is lacking, you need BOTH elements. Originality and quality. That's very, very important to me.

Anyway, enough rambling on from me. Take a gander at the image and leave a comment underneath it and let me know what you think. All interaction helps my images to be seen by a wider audience plus I like to know what you think (good and bad).

I do hope you all like it though.

With the sheer heartbreak that Italy is going through right now, I cast my mind back to that wonderful morning back in October 2019 when I was stood on the Ponte dell'Accademia, only one of four bridges that span the Grand Canal in Venice, to watch the stunning sunrise and bathe the domed majestic Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute in a wonderful warm light.

It really was a magical way to start my day and it is one of those moments that I shall cherish from my time in Venice. For now, the canals are empty, the alleyways are silent and Venice rests from the visitors that wish to experience their own little piece of magic for themselves.

Well here is mine captured on camera and thank heavens I did. This photo makes me smile and warms my heart. Venice like the rest of Italy shall shine once again in time.

Come and join me on my Harris and Lewis Photography Workshop 2nd-8th March 2019 £1,395

melvinnicholsonphotography.co.uk/product/harris-lewis-sco...

Just when I thought I had seen it all, Lewis goes and shows me something extraordinary in the form of Garry Beach at Tolsta. On first arriving this one mile sandy beach looks idyllic, calming and unspoiled then you spot the amazing sea stacks of Caisteal a' Mhorair and I feel like a child on Christmas morning, all excited and restless.

How on earth am I supposed to do the outstanding scenery justice. It really was mindblowing. In the end I decided to shoot six vertical portrait format frames with the intention of stitching them together to create one hell of a panorama. Now bearing in mind I shoot with a 50mp monster (Canon 5Ds) so I knew immediately that I was going to spend more time editing the image than it took me to shoot it.

So here it is in all its glory. Beyond amazing detail and quality that its 363MB file size would indicate.

Enjoy

Come and join me on my Harris and Lewis Photography Workshop 2nd-8th March 2019 £1,395

melvinnicholsonphotography.co.uk/product/harris-lewis-sco...

I have just been looking through some of my images taken on my January 2017 recce to Harris and Lewis and amazingly and for some strange reason, I never shared this photo I took of the world famous and iconic Luskentyre Beach on Harris.

So here it is.

For those who have yet to visit the Outer Hebrides but have it high up on your bucket list, you must GO, GO, GO. I loved it so much that I have returned three times since. Twice to run a couple of one week workshops (Nov 2017 & March 2018) and an eight day stint over the New Year period this year.

You can see me spending New Year's Evening and New Year's Day morning at the Callanish Standing Stones video here on my YouTube channel www.youtube.com/watch?v=SzABCY8AbLg&t=34s

Driving off the ferry at Tarbert and onto Harris is like stepping back in time. The sheer beauty and remoteness of Harris with its idyllic sandy beaches and aqua coloured water to the soaring jagged cliffs and dramatic coast line of Lewis. The Outer Hebrides really does have it all.

I looked at the weather forecast last night on my 'Clear Outside' weather app and the promise of mist until around 9am was predicted. I thought long and hard about where exactly I wanted to be and yet despite having shot Lake Bled on around five occasions recently, I really could not resist returning, not least because it's only a five minute drive for me.

However this morning I opted not to return to my usual vantage point, the wooden boardwalk, but to try and capture a selection of images that as others put it 'classic Nicholson'. So on arriving at the car park next to the campsite (3 EUR an hour, ouch), I wandered down to the wooden jetty opposite and set up the camera. There are a couple of beautiful, simple, wooden Pletna boats by the lakeside and so I started with them but noticed a couple of minutes later the rocks and wooden posts that line the edge of the walkway.

So I turned my attention to them while continuing to feature the iconic church island in the centre of the frame in the background. The mist was very prevalent which provided me with seemingly endless compositional possibilities. It is fair to say that I was in my element and I am never happier than when capturing images that are intrinsically mine in style.

The colour in the sky was subtle this morning but the church was visible for most of the time that I was there but I have a couple of images where it disappeared altogether. Once I had finished with this particular area, I drove up the road to another car park which allowed me a brisk ten minute walk down to the water's edge to photograph the island 'head on' as it was. The composition has the entrance to the island visible, along with the countless number of steps that take you up to the church but I shall share that another day.

To finish my morning's shoot, I took the steps to the Cafe Belvedere, which enjoys an elevated position over the lake and it gave me a lot of enjoyment watching life continuing below me. Pletna boats being powered by an electric motor around the lake, fishermen trying to land the odd fish or two in their small boats, and kayakers taking an early morning cruise around the island while ducks quacked, birds sang and life, in general, felt great. Oh, what a time to be out enjoying nature.

I hope that you enjoy the image. Feel FREE TO SHARE it if you wish

Delicate Light & Dramatic Skies, South Lakes, Cumbria

Here are three images captured during a great day out with a couple of friends of mine yesterday. The weather was crazy. One minute breezy with the sun shining hard, the next complete grey skies with snow showers pounding me in the face.

The dramatic skies made for some wonderful scenes as the squalls battered the Lake District ahead of me. These fantastic trees gave me a clue as to which way the wind normally blows but it was incredibly exposed upon the limestone pavements.

But if you want dramatic images, you have to be out in dramatic weather. To be honest, it was just great being out with friends again after such an incredibly long time. Life feels like it is getting back to some sort of normality and for that alone, yesterday would have been a success regardless of what I managed to capture on camera.

Four DAY LAKE DISTRICT AUTUMN WORKSHOP

Tues 31st October - Fri 3rd November 2017 £795

www.melvinnicholsonphotography.co.uk/product/lake-distric...

Even though I have spent the last ten years plus photographing the Lake District, there are still places that I have yet to discover and this gorgeous fairy glen that nestled quietly in a beautiful stretch of the Langstrath Beck near Rosthwaite is one such place.

I ventured up there a couple of weeks ago with two good friends of mine on a 'boys day out with their cameras' day. On arrival, I noticed that in order to get a clean shot of this lovely small waterfall in the distance, I would have to climb down a steep sided river bank and onto a rock where I was afforded this tranquil view.

I may well run a workshop down here if anyone is interested. I hope you all had a great weekend.

I spent a really enjoyable day on Wednesday in the Lake District with a lovely lady on a 1-2-1 tuition day.

The weather was spring in full flow, sunshine, blue skies and the odd cloud or two. I decided on four locations to cover our 12.30pm-8.30pm day including stints at the beautiful Blea Tarn, Cathedral Cavern (huge man made slate cave), Hodge Close Quarry and to finish Millerground at Windermere complete with a couple of lovely photogenic wooden piers.

Krystal has an Instagram profile and I suggested that she stand at the end of the jetty and to remain still for fifteen seconds which she duly did. The sky illuminated pink at sunset with some beautifully subtle clouds to boot along with the unmistakable profile of the Langdales in the background.

You can see Krystal's work by clicking on the following link.

Overall a great day was had with plenty of instruction given, four wonderful locations offering amazing scenery along with some good humour and a few stories thrown in for good measure. Thank you Krystal for a great day. I hope to see you again in the future.

Shot during our first morning of my Assynt workshop here in Scotland in 2019. I decided to start the workshop at the lovely remains of Ardvreck Castle and despite the changing weather which included a little rain, this gorgeous double rainbow appeared right over the castle itself.

I made sure everyone got a shot of it for themselves at the same time. I love nature when it produces scenes like these.

I love black and white images and Iceland offers so many opportunities to create black and white images in the winter months that it's almost impossible to decline them.

One of the things that I love Iceland for is the variety and sheer numbers of beautiful little wooden churches. I could spend one month visiting and photographing them all. There's a wonderful charm about them and of course they make great subjects to shoot.

Iceland is a country that captures your heart a thousand times more than you're able to capture it and for me personally, I feel as though I leave a part of me behind every time I return home but that I connect with the country every time I arrive again. It really does create life long memories.

Three Day Dorset Photo Workshop

9th-11th Oct 2020

melvinnicholsonphotography.co.uk/product/dorset-photograp...

Taken during my first visit to Dorset back in September 2016. One of the most frustrating challenges I face as a full-time, professional landscape photographer is trying to capture an iconic location differently and uniquely.

Durdle Door is arguably the jewel in the Dorset crown (actually I prefer Corfe Castle) and it has been photographed a million times by a million people but how do I photograph it differently. I think I found a way. This is what I settled on.

Arriving at 1am one calm, warm morning late September this year, I sat halfway down the steps and just took in the view. Weymouth in the distance providing some lovely warm light and the sound of the waves gently crashing up against the pebbled beach which produced that high pitched and empty clattering sound of pebble on pebble action as the water ruffled them up on the outstroke.

I wanted to use my amazing LED Lenser head torch to illuminate the landscape and after a few goes, I settled on lighting the mainland areas and the rock face to the left of Durdle Door for twenty-five seconds followed by holding the torch downwards from above my head for just five seconds. The quality and power generated from the £60 torch is quite remarkable. I am very happy with what I have achieved here, not least because it's a little out of the ordinary.

Sunset, Reynisdrangar Sea Stacks, Vik, Iceland

Here's an image that apparently is quite difficult to capture, mainly because the sun sets between these wonderful sea stacks at Vik only a handful of times a year and of course you need a great sunset too (which I obviously had).

What an amazing sight that was. I cannot wait to return to Iceland at the end of February 2022 to run my first workshop since February 2020. I am counting down the days.

Ever since I first visited Iceland back in February 2016, I have longed to witness and photograph a stunning aurora above Kirkjufell. Sure it's an iconic scene that lacks originality but for those who have yet to see a stunning display of the lights, this does not matter. I will take a scene like this all day long.

I arrived on location late at night to find perhaps a dozen photographers all lined up ready and waiting for the show to start and it wasn't long before the green stuff arrived. The display was mesmorising and I always find it somewhat heartening to hear the cries of joy and excitement that the aurora brings to those watching on for the very first time. I liken it to a child's eyes lighting up on Christmas morning.

Yesterday afternoon, I returned from a challenging sixteen days in the Canadian Rockies. Challenging because during my time spent there, I witnessed and endured temperatures down to -40° plus windchill and this was a whole level of cold that I had yet to experience.

This brings about its own issues when trying to photograph the scenery and I like others I know, fell ill due to the weather. I still am having a doctor confirm yesterday that I have a chest infection but for all the challenges posed, there is no doubting that the scenery looks spectacular.

This image here was the very final one that I took on the last evening before jetting home. I arrived with my clients in tow to find the cafe's interior lights on (which is hugely important in capturing this scene) but thirty minutes before dusk, the staff turned them off so I walked to the Emerald Lake Lodge around the back and kindly asked the staff if they could turn them back on and I am delighted that they did just that.

You really need the interior lights on to have the cafe offer up the warmth in the setting of the blue hour. This turned out perfectly and I am so pleased with the finished edit.

Regarding equipment, I have had so many of you message me privately asking how my Canon EOS R copped in such cold temps and I am delighted to confirm that the EOS R never missed a beat. I have been so impressed with this camera and how it has handled everything that I continue to throw at it. Canon has made a bulletproof mirrorless camera it seems.

Anyhow, I shall be sharing more images in the coming days. I hope you enjoy looking through them.

Landscape Photography Workshops & 1-2-1 Tuition

This week I am in Crete scouting out locations for a workshop that I will be running in April 2020.

I try to make the most of the opportunity to photograph wherever I tend to travel to and this week has been no exception with days starting at 4am - 4.30am and finishing around 9pm - 10pm.

On Monday evening, I decided to stay in Heraklion overnight to allow me an opportunity to photograph the 16th century fortress and harbour at first light and I was not to be disappointed. The conditions, light and colour were superb.

I have to say that I have yet to see any dedicated landscape photographers at any of the locations I have visited on the island this week (bar your tourist point and shooters of course). This has made the whole experience of photographing Crete a real joy and an absolute pleasure.

One interesting fact for you regarding the building of the fortress. In 1523 old ships were filled with stone, and were sunk to form a breakwater and increase the area of the platform on which the fortress was built. The fortress was completed in 1540. Wikipedia

I hope you like it. Have a fun Friday folks.

p.s. If you are interested in joining me in Crete next April, please let me know, I already have several names on a waiting list for more information which will be given once I have returned home and put the workshop together.

I was woken at 4am by thunder and lightning this morning whilst sleeping in my minibus so I hurridly got dressed and drove the half mile journey to the pier and quickly set up.

Firing off dozens of images between five and thirty seconds, I was hoping for some lightning action over the pier and this is one of a handful of images where I captured the lightning and the best one of that handful.

I packed up once it started raining and it was a good move as no more lightning was seen.

Right place, right time and with the pier having a high tide at the time, the lit pier lamps reflect nicely in the water. A really fantastic way to spend an hour or so first thing in the morning.

Glorious Sunrise Over Luskentyre Beach, Isle of Harris, Scotland

I remember this morning like it was yesterday yet it was back in November 2019. It was the start of day three of my week long Harris & Lewis photo workshop and I and my six clients ventured down to the world famous Luskentyre Beach before sunrise.

With the promise of a decent sunrise from the weather apps, we set up in good time in the water of the incoming tide and waited for the colour to arrive and boy did it arrive.

Here's what I managed to capture while we were all stood there waiting patiently for the magic to happen. Isn't it just a stunning view? Little wonder why Harris and Lewis is my most popular workshop at the moment.

Back Alley Arches, Piran, Slovenia

One of the most enjoyable aspects of travelling is discovering new locations/cities/towns and the beautiful coastal town of Piran on the west coast of Slovenia very much impressed me. Yes, Slovenia has 46.6km of coastline for those of you who were unaware that Slovenia had access to the sea.

Piran is often referred to as the Slovenian Mediterranean, in part due to its Venetian architecture, its narrow cobbled streets, and its beautiful harbour that houses a plethora of shiny boats of various sizes but it really is a lovely medieval town and worthy of spending a day or two there.

I took delight in exploring the many back alleyways, complete with interesting doorways and undercover arches. This one, in particular, caught my attention, and no sooner had I set up the camera and tripod, did this colourful chap rounded the corner at exactly the same time as I hit the shutter cable release. Talk about great timing but then again, luck generally plays a part where landscape photography is concerned.

Dramatic Skies, South Lakes, Cumbria

Despite only having claimed an hour's sleep at 3am on the ferry from Holyhead to Dublin overnight and feeling absolutely shattered, I wanted to share this image of the wonderful Great Pollet Sea Arch that I shot at sunset.

I felt a long exposure time of 30 seconds was required in order to smooth out the water enough to isolate the sea arch. The tide was coming in and the absence of some great sunset colours was missed but actually, I think that I have captured something rather nice myself.

What do you think?

I will be creating a four-day workshop for the North, North-West of Ireland next week to be run this September. If you are interested in attending, please contact me.

A shot I have been after for a while now which had me visit it at 4am a week last Thursday morning having driven overnight from Preston to get there before sunrise.

What a place this is, truly stunning with some fantastic views although at 4am, you can see bugger all except for the towering cliffs that you have to walk around along the very tight path. I was careful not to fall into the water below while trying to decide on a place to shoot from.

This is an image made up of three different exposures as it is almost impossible to shoot and keep detail in the shadow and highlight areas. I am very happy with how it turned out. If you get a chance to visit it for yourself, do so. The south-east coastline of Scotland (East Lothian) is a really beautiful and dramatic part of the world to photograph.

I will be emailing out a blog tomorrow of my five day roadtrip to Scotland last week. I'm just writing it up now (I hope you all book a week off work to read it, ha, ha).

I hope you've all had a great weekend. Let me know what you've been upto if you fancy :D

FOUR DAY LAKE DISTRICT AUTUMN WORKSHOP

What an amazing day I've had today running a workshop at the beautiful Holme Fell and Hodge Close Quarry with six fantastic clients.

Here is a shot that I quickly captured while giving my clients time to set up their cameras. The low sun slowly rose up from behind the fell while the heavy mist gave an ethereal and hauntingly beautiful feel to Holme Fell. This wonderful tree made the perfect subject to shoot but timing is everything and I had to wait a couple of minutes to ensure that the sun was in just the right place behind the tree itself.

Yesterday I had the pleasure of Andy's company, a new 1-2-1 client. I decided to take him to the gorgeous little woodland of Millerground at Windermere where on arriving, the most wonderful misty morning greeted us.

We spent almost four hours in just this location alone working quite a few compositions. There were quite a few swimmers practising for the Great North Swim that's taking place 8th-10th June.

I hope you all like the image. Have a wonderful weekend everyone. I am back up to the Lake District tomorrow to run a one day workshop at Rydal. If you're in the area and see me, come say hi :D

High Tide at Marine Lake, West Kirby, Merseyside

Firstly, may I say a BIG thank you to all those who have started following me on Instagram recently. Much appreciated. Thank you. www.instagram.com/melvinnicholsonphotography

So, on Monday, I spent a couple of hours at a place that I have been wanting to photograph for some time now, Marine Lake at West Kirby in Merseyside. A very high tide of 9.9 metres was forecast so I ventured off to capture the tide breaching the rocks and walkway. I was not to be disappointed but it was a challenge as is a lot of coastal photography at high tide.

This beach that you can see here was photographed on my last day there back in January and it is typical of the stunningly beautiful sandy beaches that you see on Harris. The colour of the water is aqua, the sandy lovely and golden and the skies either bright blue or full of the most vibrant clouds known to man.

Scotland is sure one hell of a place to visit with a camera and I never tire of doing so whatever the weather/time of the year but late autumn should produce some stunning colours whilst still being mild. The temperatures were ten degrees in the middle of January which happened to be the warmest in Europe at the time. Apparently Lewis and Harris does not suffer extreme cold weather in the winter.

Anyway, I hope you all like the image as much as I did taking it :D
