I ventured down to Rannoch Moor recent to photograph this lovely lonely tree in the mist when all of a sudden this unbelievable fogbow appeared. It is a colourless rainbow that is made up of tiny water droplets that cause fog. It's an amazing thing to witness and can generally only be seen if the sun is behind you when you are looking at it.

As soon as I saw this wonderful isolated windswept tree, I knew that it had to be framed by the fog bow. Freshly fallen snow set the scene all around. It was just beyond magical and one of those days that you'll remember for a long time to come.

Another image captured during my couple of hours spent down at the estuary at Lytham, St Anne's recently.

On arriving in Lytham around 8pm, I went for a wander along the shoreline of the estuary and I noticed a partially submerged sailing boat as the incoming tide was doing its best to hide it from view and within forty minutes, it did just that but this boat piqued my interest.

It was perfectly positioned upside down in its own pool of water. The tide was coming in and starting to infiltrate the water pool and the water level was rising as I took this shot. The sun was setting much further round to the right and out of view but I had hoped for more colour would show itself but alas, it sadly did not.

Foliage and Rock Detail, Cathedral Cavern, Langdale Valley, Lake District

Something a little different from me today. An interior shot of the fallen rocks inside the wonderous Cathedral Cavern in the Lake District. I took this on a 1-2-1 that I was running with a lovely lady called Niki yesterday.

I was demonstrating how I would set up a shot inside the huge, man-made slate cage utilising the lush green ferns above. I love the lighting, the composition and of course, the subjects in this photo. I hope you do too.

Rydal Falls & Grotto, Rydal, Lake District

Last Saturday, I ran a one day Lake District workshop which had us visit and photograph Rydal Cave (always a treat), the boathouse and this gorgeous small waterfall.

The foliage in the summer is plentiful and verdant and the greenery always allows the image to be wonderfully framed. This lovely little stone Grotto below was built in 1668 and is wood panelled inside and complete with lighting and wooden benches to sit and admire the view of the waterfall (as there is a window looking out on the far side of the stone hut).

You could at one time remove the window and store it in a special recessed cupboard that is set into the wall but sadly, it is no longer removable. Still, what a beautiful place this is to sit and watch the views.

I hope you are all having a wonderful weekend :D

What an amazing scene we were treated to on the workshop I led in the outer Hebrides last week. I just love this place.

Standing high up on the very edge of the cliff with the wind blowing and me standing right up against the camera to prevent buffeting while shooting a thirty second exposure is the stuff of dreams, especially when the views are as good as this.

If you have yet to visit the Outer Hebrides, let me urge you to go. Lewis has the dramatic views, the high cliffs, the pounding waves and the dominant sea stacks while Harris is the complete opposite. Harris is all about peace and tranquillity with its gently sloping golden sandy beaches and stunning aqua coloured water. There really is nowhere quite like the Outer Hebrides in the UK.

I hope you like the image and please feel free to SHARE if you wish (thanking you in advance should you do so).

The Aurora Borealis Lights Up Lofoten, Flakstad, Norway

WOW, what a beautiful display of the ever mesmerising northern lights as they put on a beautiful show last week.

I took my six clients along to perhaps the most popular spot to shoot them from, Flakstad Beach. This is such an easy location to reach, it's pretty central, has a big car park and even toilets for those waiting hours to see the green stuff in the sky appear.

We arrived at 10pm and stayed a couple of hours. It's a very quick two minute walk down to the beach where wonderful reflections of the nearby mountain can be seen in the water. All of my clients (and I of course) had huge smiles on our faces as we witnessed the eight wonder of the world (in my eyes anyway) and for some, it was their first time seeing the aurora.

Seeing how happy the aurora has people feel always makes me smile and feel good. It is just such an amazing phenomenon to see with your own eyes.

I LOVE coastal scenes, I should do, I was born and bred in Blackpool after all and this location excited me on arriving late in the afternoon a couple of weeks ago.

Fanad Head Lighthouse is surrounded by some magnificent rocks that are so full of detail, colour and texture that trying to decide on a composition were nigh on impossible. In the end, I settled on a low position looking up at the lighthouse with a four portrait panorama stitched in Photoshop CC is the way forward. I could have shot the scene landscape format with a single image at 16mm on a full frame but I would not have quite got all of the rocks in on either side.

The sound of the ocean as it crashed in against the rocks below me felt invigorating and the soft glow of the end of day light gently lit up the rocks just beautifully and delicately. It is wonderful views like these that has me feel like the luckiest man alive in being able to shoot landscapes full time.

This location will feature during my September 2017 based five-day North-West & Giant's Causeway, Ireland Workshop that I will be launching tomorrow (those who have subscribed to my newsletter will be notified first ahead of the general public and those on social media. So if you want to be the first to be notified, simply sigh up at the link below. It's free and only takes thirty seconds).

Tuscany Photography Workshop

21st - 26th Sept 2020

.

.

After one of my most enjoyable day's landscape photography that I can remember for some time, I decided to finish yesterday off by paying the gorgeous, elegant Chapel of the Madonna di Vitaleta a visit pre-dawn.

This gorgeous little church stands high up on a hill near Pienza flanked by two rows of Cypress trees with a Maritime Pine standing guard close by. It is perhaps one of the most enchanting and beautiful scenes I have ever seen, simple yet so wonderfully evocative.

Once parked in the free car park, a short eight minute walk leads you to the church where naturally I was alone in the dark until the sun rose to reveal the beauty of the church.

I hope you like the image. Here's a link to some more information about the church for those interested in reading up on it. Here's a bit of trivia for you. The church once housed the Madonna sculpture by artist, Andrea della Robbia.

I wasn't entirely sure what to expect on arriving at Slap Savica yesterday afternoon but after taking the hiking trail for 20 minutes, I was amazed at just how beautiful the waterfall was.

Firstly, the dual waterfall drops down 78 metres into the most wonderful emerald green colour pool and the whole setting is amazing, especially the gorge that it is located in.

It is said that this waterfall (Slap in Slovenia means waterfall by the way) is Slovenia's third most visited tourist attraction and yet I had the whole place all to myself.

The pandemic has provided me with some wonderful opportunities to visit and photograph some amazing places all alone and I am so grateful to have the opportunity to do so.

What is the most impressive waterfall you have visited?

Dawn at the Chapel of St. Nicholas, Georgioupolis, Chania, Crete, Greece

Taken on my week spent touring the gorgeous island of Crete back in April 2019. This beautifully simple yet perfectly positioned chapel stands at the end of a long, rocky walkway out to the ocean. Knowing that the sun was due to rise behind it, I arrived a good hour beforehand to capture the lovely, warm tones of dawn before positioning myself close to the lighthouse nearby to capture the sun rising centrally above the chapel.

What a stunning morning this was although it looks peaceful and tranquil, I most certainly was not. Knowing that I had very little time between capturing this angle and the one with the rising sun, I ran around like a headless chicken to be sure that I got what I came for. Mission accomplished, phew.

Little wonder why I am considering running a workshop in Crete in the near future.

September is one of the best times to visit Tuscany due to the magical mist that swirls and rolls through the gorgeous valley of San Quirico d'Orcia.

On this morning back in Sept 2019, I was blown away by the stunning scenery as the sun rose and illuminated all that lay below while the pre-dawn colours radiated in the sky.

This morning ranks as one of my top three finest sunrises since I first picked up a camera way back in February 2007. It was an absolute privilege to photograph this gorgeous and iconic farmhouse.

Arriving on location at around 6.20am (sunrise scheduled for 7.04am), I wandered over to a clearing in the olive trees that afforded a stunning view of the farmhouse below. There were copious amounts of mist swirling around in the valley below, revealing trees and buildings as it went before concealing them as quickly.

The whole scene was alive and changing every few seconds. It was bloody magical and the kind of conditions that I and every landscape photographer prays for. I felt so lucky to have witnessed this and the other three mornings during my week in Tuscany.

Lofoten Winter Workshop : 7th-13th February 2020

www.melvinnicholsonphotography.co.uk/product/lofoten-norw...

Oh my, Lofoten is the gift that keeps on giving. I am still editing new images taken way back in February this year when I spent a very enjoyable week touring around this gorgeous collection of islands linked by numerous bridges in some of the most beautiful conditions and when lit at night, looked almost romantic I'd say.

This gorgeous 259 year old wooden church (built 1760) sits in Flakstad which enjoys ocean views and is located by the main road from Ramberg to Leknes. Every time I saw it lit on my way back to the guesthouse, I thought that I must stop one night and on this particular evening I did.

Isn't it just lovely and the way it has been lit, it looks like it's made out of gold. I can only hope that the town does not replace the lights for modern LED ones.

Anyhow, if you would like to join me on my Lofoten winter workshop next February, jump on board sooner than later as places are starting to fill up. If Lofoten remains on your bucket list of locations to visit, now would be the perfect time to join me and at £1,495, it has never been more affordable.

Dolomites Photography Workshop

Well, here is an image of the iconic and world famous three near 10,000ft monoliths of the Tre Cime di Lavaredo as uniquely seen from the remains of a World War 1 tunnel.

During my workshop to the truly stunning Dolomites last October, I took my lovely clients into the UNESCO World Heritage Site for a day's wander around some of the most impressive landscape I have ever witnessed. En-route to the Rifugio Lavaredo, which we shot at sunset, I came across this wonderful tunnel with window sections that offered up some quite outstanding views. I simply had to set up the camera and tripod and take a few shots.

The contrast proved difficult and the lighting conditions were vast but the Canon 5D MK4 coped wonderfully well as this is a single exposure capture. No HDR going on here.

Five Night Assynt & Inverpolly Photography Workshop/Tour 18th-23rd November 2018 £650 / £795

melvinnicholsonphotography.co.uk/product/assynt-inverpoll...

Having now returned home from a fantastic week's landscape photography in the truly beautiful region of Assynt in Scotland (far north west, have a look on the map. I stayed in Lochinver), I am now trying to edit an image or two.

Here's a capture of a gorgeous boulder bay at the hugely photogenic Achnahaird Beach. The water level was just right to have me shoot it at five seconds which not only softened the water down just beautifully, but also retain texture in it too which was important for me. I could have shot it at thirty seconds and gone for a complete long exposure but I find myself steering away from extreme long exposure shots these days. I certainly do not use my ten stop filter half as much as I use to do that's for sure.

Turquoise Waters, Uttakleiv Beach, Lofoten, Norway

Lofoten in Norway has many, many iconic and well known locations to photograph. Reine, Skagsanden Beach, Flakstad to name but a few and of course the most famous of them all, Hamnoy but while Uttakleiv Beach is also on that list, it is so notably because of the 'Monster's Eye' (see the first comment box below for my photo of the Monster's Eye).

However, I rarely see other images from Uttakleiv Beach so I spent an hour or so capturing the wonderful array of rocks close by as the tide surged backwards and forwards, filling these lovely little channels. I had to manoeuvre carefully as I did not want to fall in and I had to take extra care of my camera equipment from the saltwater of the ocean but apart from that, it was an absolute pleasure to photograph this gorgeous stretch of coastline.

I aim to give my future Lofoten workshop clients even longer at this beach to capture their own images as I feel that there's so much potential to be had. In this image, the light was fading fast as the end of the day arrived all too quickly. The skies darkened a little with what appeared to be a possible impending storm brewing. I felt energised, excited and enthused to just be standing there witnessing such beauty. It was at this very point that Lofoten captured my heart, mind and soul. What an experience.

Have a great day/evening everyone. If you like the image, please feel free to SHARE. Thanking you in advance.

FOUR DAY LAKE DISTRICT AUTUMN WORKSHOP

Tues 31st October - Fri 3rd November 2017 £795

www.melvinnicholsonphotography.co.uk/product/lake-distric...

A glorious morning during my three-day workshop in the Lakes between Christmas and New Year. I was explaining the joys of composition to my three clients when I spotted a wheelbarrow in the water a hundred yards up the lake. I don't need asking twice. In I went and positioned it perfectly (to my mind anyway). I mean who does not love a wheelbarrow in the middle of a long exposure image of a beautiful little bay in the Lake District in winter?

Exactly.

Mary's Shell is a wonderful art sculpture located on the beach in Cleveleys. High tide was due at 3.35am which allowed me plenty of time to set up at 2am and wait for the incoming tide to surround the base of the sculpture.

I experimented with various compositions and shutter speeds ranging from just two seconds to thirty. The lovely warm glow of the lights to my left emanated from the street lights but I do not mind the inclusion of the light pollution for it helps to give the sky a lovely warmth about it.

Here's a shot of the ever popular and iconic Quiraing with the Prison and The Needle section of rocks showing to the upper left of the image. I took this shot a couple of days ago after walking two miles to reach this viewpoint as the road up to the top was incredibly icy and slippery. A little too dangerous for me to drive it.

But the views are worth any amount of walking wouldn't you agree?

Lofoten Landscape Photography Workshops

This image was shot back in mid-February 2020 and it feels like a lifetime ago now.

I, along with six lovely clients, went aurora chasing at night during my Lofoten workshop. After a couple of no shows earlier in the workshop, a kp4 aurora was predicted so we ventured down to a popular local hotspot, Skagsanden Beach. It is a location that allowed us to park up in the free car park and sit in the minibus in comfort until the lights showed at which point we dashed out and onto the beach to capture the lights while the rocks on the beach reflected in the water.

Oh, how I wish I was back there right now. Still, I have a couple of places left for my November 2021 workshop, so I shall look forward to returning then.

Iceland has a great deal of small wooden churches and they really appeal to me. I love the different designs, colour schemes and choice of materials but it is the wonderful locations you often find them in that excites me.

Here's a wonderful old church at Hellnar, which is situated right next door to our hotel (Fosshotel, Hellnar) and it makes a wonderful subject to photograph. I took this the week before my clients arrived for their workshop when I had all day to compose the shot and wait for the right conditions.

On the way back to the hotel in Cortina d'Ampezzo, me and my five lovely photo workshop clients passed Lake Misurina although you'd hardly know it due to the extreme levels of mist around.

We were supposed to be photographing the hotel down at the other end of the lake but we could barely see past this wooden jetty so I sensed an opportunity and took it before the rain fell. We all had a wonderful thirty minutes to capture a minimalist scene. I always think that it is a great learning experience to push yourself out of your comfort zone and try to photograph something from nothing sometimes.

I rolled into the twilight zone that is Holywell Bay. I call it the twilight zone because I had neither internet reception on my mobile OR phone signal which is somewhat surprising considering the popularity of the place on the coast.

I walked the fifteen minute wander down to the beach from the main car park, met a couple of other photographers standing there shooting the beautiful sea stacks before they left as the light faded. I decided to stay on and capture the dramatic stormy skies post sunset. This is a panorama of six vertical images with an overlay of around 30% to allow Lightroom CC to work its magic (Photoshop CC did a slightly lesser job in stitching this together for some reason although there wasn't much in it between the two programs but when you're after the best quality you can produce, any little improvement is a help.

I am going through my back catalogue to edit some fresh images to upload onto my website to promote my range of workshops for 2019.

I am currently putting together a three day residential Northumberland photography workshop for March 2019 when I came across this image of one of the most amazing sunrises I have ever witnessed.

I was all set up on the beach at Bamburgh waiting for the magic to happen when the sun quickly rose above the horizon just off to the right of the Farne Islands. I was mesmorised and as happy as a child on Christmas morning for I knew that I would capture something truly beautiful and having just found the image, I knew that I was right.

Stuck In Paradise, Crosby Beach, Merseyside

In preparation for my one day long exposure workshop that I ran last Sunday on the Merseyside coastline, I decided to pop down to Crosby Beach last week to capture some new images.

I was at the beach photographing the life sized Antony Gormley statues after Antony himself had recently visited to oversee the repositioning of ten of the one hundred statues installed.

www.theguardian.com/artanddesign/2021/jun/14/antony-gorml...

These wonderful life size statues of Antony Gormley's permanent exhibition 'Another Place' are a big hit with photographers and visitors alike. They make fantastic subjects to shoot during an incoming tide as you can perfect your long exposure techniques. For those interested, the statues are based on Antony's actual body.

The conditions were perfect for what I had in mind and it was great to have met fellow photographer Dominic Darvell on the beach too. Many thanks to Dominic for his company. You can follow Dominic on Instagram here www.instagram.com/dominic_darvellphotography

Sunrise Sea Fret at Steetley Pier, Hartlepool

Last Monday, on day 33 of my 33 day road trip around the UK, I dragged myself out of bed at 3.45am and ventured down to the hugely photogenic (not to mention huge), Steetley Pier in Hartlepool for sunrise.

On arrival, the colours on the horizon were wonderful and vibrant and a decent sunrise was promised. However with just ten minutes to go before the sun was due to rise at the end of the pier, mass amounts of sea fret rolled in to completely obscure the view of any detail.

I stood there and looked at Lee, my photography buddy I met down there, and said, "What the hell has just happened?" "Where's the sunrise gone?" Lee laughed, and I eventually did as I realised that it is rarer to photograph the pier in heavy sea fret (sea fog) than it is during a decent sunrise. There was also a high tide, which allowed the pier to be completely isolated from everything.

So here is an image of Steetley Pier that was as captured in camera. Nothing has been cloned out and I especially love the inclusion of the slightly blurred birds that sat on top of the large circular tubes on either side of the pier.

While running my workshop in the Dolomites last October, I ventured to a place that I had not been able to reach the previous year as the cable cars close down around the end of the first week in October.

So I took my five lovely clients up to the summit of the Seceda, a remarkable 8,200ft mountain range, to capture the mid-morning light. On arriving at the gondola station, we were informed that snow had fallen overnight and that it was sub-zero temperatures on top. So seven €32 tickets were purchased and we boarded the large gondola to the mid-way station to board a smaller gondola. The views up there were staggering.

Stepping out from the gondola station onto the freshly fallen snow while the views all around were bathed in lovely light was just magical. Yes, it was a tad chilly but when the clouds rolled in and started to swirl around the peaks, it became very atmospheric.

It was well worth enduring the cold temperatures but on the flip side, we got to enjoy a hot chocolate and lunch in the summit restaurant. Have a marvellous Monday evening everyone

Honeycomb Tubes, Compass Point, Bude, Cornwall

Well, I have witnessed some quite incredible rocks on some of the world's finest beaches but yesterday's outing to Compass Point in Bude, Cornwall just about tops them all.

On arriving forty five minutes before sunset (once again minus the sun and colour), I was amazed by the sight of some stunning honeycomb structures that clung to various rocks. They appeared to be made of sand and were fragile to touch. They looked intricate and so beautiful.

On further research, it turns out that the tubes are made by Honeycomb worms, which are tiny worms that live around the low tide area of the beach. They build tubes, attached to the rock to live in and the structures we see on the beach are dense colonies made up of thousands of individual worms. Fully grown, each individual worm is around 3-4cm. The colonies however can often cover large areas of rock, forming solid reefs.

They are found all around the U.K’s coastline, predominantly on the western coast. The worms need a moderate amount of wave exposure in order to feed and form reefs so we tend to find them on beaches that aren’t too sheltered, which is exactly the habitat that North Cornwall provides. This is why they are so common on the beaches around Bude.

www.visitbude.info/blog/what-are-the-sand-honeycomb-struc...

Regarding this photo, I had a quick wander around but as soon as I saw this wonderful section of honeycomb rock, I positioned myself behind it. The tide was at its lowest point but was quickly incoming. after it turning. Within twenty minutes, there was enough water surrounding it to create this image. Fear not, I did not stand on any honeycombs when taking this shot.

Following on from a very successful four days spent in Dorset last week where I had a new client for a couple of days personal 1-2-1 tuition and a couple of one-day workshops over the weekend, I managed to sneak in this seven image stitch panorama of Dorset's most iconic location, Durdle Door.

The weather was absolutely perfect. Blue skies with white fluffy clouds with enough motion in the ocean to capture it with texture over a couple of seconds. There's a car park about a fifteen minute walk away from the top of the stairs at Durdle Door but I would say you need reasonable fitness and mobility to walk down to the beach. The return ascent back to the car park will leave you puffing and panting for sure.

While leading a workshop in Iceland last week at the iconic location of Budir, where the black and white church resides, I noticed this stunning snow capped mountain peak in the distance. The summit was partly shrouded in low lying cloud and I just thought that it looked really beautiful so I could not resist capturing it on camera to show you all.

FOUR DAY LAKE DISTRICT AUTUMN WORKSHOP

Tues 31st October - Fri 3rd November 2017 £795

www.melvinnicholsonphotography.co.uk/product/lake-distric...

I am heading back to the beautiful Lake District National Park to run a three-day workshop Weds, Thurs and Fri this week and I cannot wait. I have three clients who will be joining me for three wonderful days of landscape photography. What a fantastic way to end the year.

So with that in mind, I thought that I would share with you an image that nobody has seen before, the fantastic Moss Force Falls in the Newlands Valley on the road between Keswick and Buttermere. Now, this has to be perhaps the most accessible waterfall in the Lake District. It is only 200 metres from the free roadside car park and it is split into three sections but together it measures 328 feet in height. Quite impressive indeed.

This photograph here was taken during a four-day workshop back in October when I was demonstrating various techniques which involved standing pretty close to the edge of the drop while maintaining my nerve and using a wide angle lens to capture the whole scene in one shot. I had my clients stand back a safe distance from the edge, while I set up their cameras and tripods before handing them their cable release to take the shot themselves. Client safety is always a priority for me as no shot is worth dying for.

Anyhow, I hope you all like it. Have a great day and feel free to SHARE as usual if you wish.

One of the most iconic locations in Tuscany is this gorgeous agriturismo that nestles in the hills of the Crete Senesi. I had an absolute glorious week that was full of colour, sunshine and magical misty mornings.

I was leading a one day workshop to Hodge Close Quarry on Sunday with a couple of clients when on arriving, the fog rolled in and created such wonderfully atmospheric conditions. I simply had to grab a quick shot of this beautiful Silver Birch tree which grows on the very edge of a 60ft drop. The way it clings to life impresses me for I admire its resilience, determination never to let go and to continue battling on through life no matter what is thrown at it. I am coming back as a tree in my next life :-)

I shall be running more one day workshops here throughout the winter. If you would like to be notified ahead of the general public, feel free to SIGN UP to my mailing list newsletters.

Last October, I visited Venice for the first time. I had two days available between scouting out Tuscany for a workshop running Sept this year and leading my annual workshop in the Dolomites.

It's certainly an interesting place and as expected, was pretty busy which frustrated me no end (hence why I've decided not to run a workshop in Venice now) but one of the ways that I sought to get around that problem was to head out with my camera at 4am.

I started with Piazza San Marco (St Mark's Square) and I really enjoyed walking around on my own (bar the odd drunken local too, lol). But en-route to shooting sunrise from the Ponte dell'Accademia Bridge, I went in search of some lovely quaint back alley and canals when I came across this one.

It was perfect. It had boats, wonderful buildings, a couple of illuminated street lights and a gorgeous metal bridge. How could I resist really? I much prefer exploring cities overnight, when the best bits are all lit up and it's so quiet. To this end, Venice delivered the goods but alas, no sooner did the sunrise, the streets filled. Still, the waterways and alleyways are near deserted at the moment, giving the city some much-needed downtime from the hordes of tourists (me included).

I do wonder what if any, changes will be implemented to help preserve the city in the near future. An interesting point for me to ponder on while I have the time to do so.

Since returning from New Zealand and Australia a month ago, I have not been out with the camera shooting just for myself. This is not entirely uncommon with landscape photographers during the summer months but in my case, I had/have a lot of admin to catch up on since returning from my month away travelling.

The demands of running a business, as well as putting the polishing touches to my 2020 workshops has left me with little time to head out but yesterday I felt the urge to do so. So I checked the tide height at this local iconic spot (this wooden jetty complete with the 'lamp stand water marker') and sure enough, the tide height was perfect for a sunset shot so off I went eager to scratch my photography itch.

I combined the trip with a drink in a local pub beforehand with Chris Beard, a good friend of mine and photographer too before heading across the road to capture the sunset. Now the sun dropped way over my right shoulder so there was no colour to be captured although it was a gorgeous sunset with lovely pinks in the sky reflecting in the incoming tide complete with several Herons all walking around by the shoreline in the water looking for food. It was just lovely being outdoors and among nature.

The tide slowly comes in at this location until it reaches around six foot from the end of the jetty then the bugger rushes in rather quickly. You do not have a lot of time to get the shot you want. Perhaps five minutes and that's it. You also have to be careful that the water does not rise from under the jetty and soak your camera bag through. I got away with wearing waterproof leather hiking boots but had I stayed around any longer, wellies would definitely have been needed.

Anyhow, this shot was taken using a Kase 6 Stop ND filter and it performed brilliantly as always.

JOIN ME on my Five Day Northern Lights Iceland Workshop

15th - 20th October 2020

I returned home from Iceland this morning and I am going through my images. I have to start this post by saying that to my mind, Iceland's Diamond Beach at Jökulsárlón is without a doubt one of the most fascinating and beautiful places on earth.

Jet black, volcanic sand and rocks live alongside the fierce icy waters of the North Atlantic. For those unaware of how this little part of the world works regarding icebergs being washed up onto the beach, let me fill in the blanks for you.

Ice falls from Vatnajökull Glacier and into the Jökulsárlón ice lagoon. They then slowly float out to the sea where they get tossed up onto the beach. It really is quite some sight to see icebergs the size of cars being deposited onto the beach. Walking around all the ice that lines the beach allows you to take your time and find some interesting compositions and angles.

On Thursday, I eventually decided on this composition in order to capture the stunning bright orange settling sun dropping behind this amazing sparkling, crystal clear iceberg. As the light from the sun filtered through the iceberg, it lit up the rocks directly in front of the iceberg. I opted for an incredibly low vantage point, mere inches above the ground in order to place the iceberg high up into the darkening sky in order to give it its own space to shine, quite literally in this instance.

These are the kind of images that have me become connected to the landscape I am so blessed to regularly experience at close quarters. I could just look at this view forever. I hope you all like it too.
