As I leave the glorious coastline and county of Sussex for Norfolk this afternoon, I am reminded what a spectacular place it really is not to mention those who I have met along the way.

Special thanks must go to Maxine for being such a fantastic host for a couple of days this week as she very kindly gave up some of her time to show me around some of her favourite places including this wonderful lighthouse at Beachy Head. I couldn't have done it without you Maxine :D x

So I enter my final stage of the mammoth 26 day World Tour of the UK (home on Weds) and the counties of Norfolk, Suffolk and Essex will see me end the journey on a high. What a blast it has been, such an amazing trip that this photo of the lighthouse for me is an appropriate image to share with you all as the sun has indeed shone down on me. I will be sorry to see it end.

Have a wonderful weekend everyone and continued HUGE thanks for supporting me during my travels. I really, REALLY appreciate it.

Here is a newly edited image from my Iceland workshop in January 2019. It includes one of my favourite subjects in Iceland, the emergency mountain shelter. This one that is parked on Route 54 on the Snaefellsnes Peninsula is a favourite subject to shoot and if you throw in near white-out conditions into the mix, I am in landscape photography heaven.

So here is my version of the classic viewpoint and for those wanting to head up high to the summit of the mountain road in such difficult conditions, take a shovel, a tow rope, a sleeping bag, some drink and food and a charged and working mobile phone because this was the place where I got stranded back in February 2017 and ended up sleeping in the car overnight in -11 temperatures until help arrived 9am the next morning.

Oh, the things we do to get the shot.

Just take a look at this 756m mountain range located past Vestrahorn in the south-east of Iceland. Isn't it absolutely stunning?

Although I have visited Iceland on nine occasions since Feb 2016, I have only ventured past Vestrahorn and through the tunnel once and that was back in Oct 2018 while running a workshop. I remember driving out of the tunnel to see such incredible beauty before me and actually feeling so excited in discovering a new part of Iceland.

I aim to return in October to travel the whole ring road up along the north coast and down the east before resuming my known locations in the south and the west (Snaefellsnes Peninsula) and I cannot wait.

Until then, enjoy the spectacular views that I experienced nearly two years ago now. Iceland, it truly is one of my favourite countries in the world.

It is currently Day ? of self isolation during this Covid-19 period and I have to confess that all the days are starting to merge into each other (hence the question mark).

Being isolated on my own in my home allows me plenty of time to do the things that I said I did not have time for previously so I have no excuses now. One of the jobs on my 'to do' list is to create a new portfolio gallery on my website so I am reviewing and selecting hundreds of images to feature in the said portfolio.

One of the upsides of doing this is that I get to relive some wonderful memories from past visits to some amazing countries and they really do not come any better than my trip to New Zealand back in 2018 (last year's was superb too but the conditions, light and weather was better in 2018).

Here is an image of one of the most amazing places that I have ever visited, the gorgeous Moeraki Beach complete with its four million year old boulders. This place is beyond magical as these spherical boulders, some as high as four feet lie dormant on the beach. I timed my visit perfectly with high tide occurring at sunrise, all that was required was a stunning sunrise and didn't I get just that. Definitely one of the highlights of my two weeks out there.

I hope you're all surviving and not going too stir crazy.

How surreal did it feel me standing in one of the most world's famous squares at 5am, pre-dawn all alone with nothing but my thoughts and a few moments to breathe solo without thousands of people hustling and bustling by?

Very surreal.

I have mentioned this before on several occasions but I absolutely love exploring new cities and places in general at night on my own. Lights illuminate the areas of interest and the shadows hide the parts few people want to see. The contrast between what you can see and what you can't is magnified and that excites me.

During my two day visit to Venice early October 2019, I found the place incredibly busy, and almost impossible to set up a tripod and get anything of any worth but at night, the cityscape is transformed into a playground of endless opportunities. I really enjoyed wandering through the tight, narrow alleyways while walking over countless canal bridges, both large and small.

Walking around St Mark's Square in peace and quiet allowed me to see up close the architecture and appreciate the history of the place. St Mark's Square was created in 829 (approx) and the main buildings that you can see in the image are two storeys high with offices above and shops below.

Doesn't it look absolutely resplendent all lit up in the dark? Definitely one of the highlights of Venice for me.

Taken during a fleeting moment of colour down at Vermillion Lakes the other morning. This location is one of the most popular owing mainly to the fact that it is positioned so closely to the town of Banff.

This small section of lake alongside another small section nearby never freezes due to it being a hot spring. This gives us photographers the perfect opportunity to capture mirror reflections of Mt Rundle while the sun rises to its left. We arrived on location a good hour or so before sunrise to ensure that we bagged our spots ahead of any other photographers.

I returned from running my winter workshop on Skye on Wednesday and while I would have liked a little more light than we got (bar an amazing sunrise on the Sunday at the Quiraing), subdued conditions do make for some fantastic opportunities to capture water shots as bright light often burns out the water.

On this particular day, I took my fellow photographers up to the Fairy Pools, which for those of you who know, is a truly stunning part of Skye and quite easily the most impressive stretch of river anywhere in the UK.

Under water arches, iridescent green plunge pools and of course the numerous waterfalls that line the Glen Brittle river all go to make this one of my favourite locations in the UK. On this visit, I had a little time to find and capture some different compositions on a familiar subject matter and this gorgeous little rock and water section fitted the bill perfectly.

I have just two places left on my five night Isle of Skye photo workshop - 15th-20th Nov 2021

melvinnicholsonphotography.co.uk/product/isle-of-skye-sco...

Spherical, Elgol, Isle of Skye

During a recent flying visit to the stunning Isle of Skye in Scotland, I ventured down to Elgol for a sunset and a sunrise shoot the following morning.

I landed not long before dusk kicked in and with a high tide reaching its peak soon after, I set up on the fifteen-minute hobble over boulders, and rocky ledges and edges. I knew exactly where I wanted to be to capture the eerily dusk as the low cloud descended further to completely block out the dominant Black Cuillin mountains in the background.

Once the tripod was set up, on went the Canon R5 camera and Kase filters and within five minutes the tide was crashing in up and around my knees, thank heavens for my wellies and waterproof pants is all I can. Twenty minutes later, the task was done. Images captured on the memory card and a slow wander back to my minibus/makeshift campervan for the nine day Scottish trip.

I have always thought there was something quite mystical about Elgol. It has a certain feeling all to itself and one that I cannot quite put my finger on it, and it was in abundance that evening. I drove a few miles up the road and parked up in a free layby (not a passing pass) and spent a comfortable night in the bus before returning in the morning to capture the sunrise.

If you would like to capture this scene and many, many other gorgeous places on Skye, come and join me on my five night workshop in November. Click the link above for details.

This beach along with its neighbouring one Haukland, have both become my favourite beaches in Lofoten without a doubt. Uttakleiv has a wide variety of rocks to tempt a lover of coastal photography in with their camera.

This image was capture during my winter trip back in February and the sky was amazing on this particular day. So full of detail, texture and subtle colour. The iconic monster's eye rock is located just a few feet to my left and while my good friend Ed was busy shooting that, I decided to explore and find my own little gem and it did not take long to stumble on this scene.

The rocks that lead you up through the frame from the bottom right-hand corner were beautifully positioned and I used a polariser to cut through the white reflected light that sat on the surface of the water. This allows the details, colours and textures to be fully seen and appreciated.

Isn't it just a stunning scene?

I made my first visit to this lighthouse this afternoon with my six clients. I had seen images of it and thought it worthy of a visit and I wasn't wrong. I picked an interesting day weatherwise in the hope of seeing some stormy clouds and we were treated to some fantastic clouds including bouts of heavy hailstorms.

This place is dramatic. The waves crashed up against the vertical cliff faces as the lighthouse light rotated. This is most definitely a location that will be on my next Outer Hebrides workshop 12th-18th March 2018. If you are interested in joining me, let me know.

I have finally found some time to look back through my extensive portfolio of images from my three months travelling around various countries and I am sat at my PC smiling ear to ear while looking at this image of a truly mesmerising morning at the iconic Belverdere Farmhouse in Tuscany.

I spent eight days travelling alone in September, discovering all the wonders that Tuscany has to offer and I was completely blown away by the sheer beauty, serenity and peacefulness of the place.

San Quirico d'Orcia in particular (where I was based), was the heart and soul of the region and is famous for having swirling mist rolling down and through the valley below and I had these conditions on several mornings. It was just magical. Even my hotel balcony had views looking over the valley (Casanova Hotel and Spa).

Another capture from my time spent at Derwentwater with two clients of mine on Wednesday. I had not realised just how many great opportunities I took that day with the weather and fantastic light.

Here's a shot of the 'Annie Mellor' boat coming into dock at one of my favourite piers on Derwentwater. I love how the passengers who are stood on the pier look ghostly while waiting to board. I took a photo of the 200ft Skogafoss waterfall in Iceland back in February using the same technique. Slow the shutter speed down enough to have the movements of those in front of me captured.

The sky that afternoon was sublime. Casting shadows on Skiddaw and Blencathra in the background while allowing streams of light to filter through onto the fells and surrounding mountains.

Well, what a lovely place to spend a morning today and the first location of three on my one day Yorkshire Dales workshop today. This gorgeous waterfall is just a thirty-second walk from the car park (coordinates 54.276202, -1.972721).

The funny thing is that I have never visited this waterfall before but having seen a photo of it somewhere a few weeks ago now, I knew that I had to include it on a Yorkshire Dales workshop and what an inspired decision that was.

The sun was streaming through the leaves to the right of the waterfall and that helped to illuminate the gorgeous red water at the base of the waterfall. Using the wonderful moss covered rocks and tree trunks in the foreground allowed me to create some interest and a base for the waterfall to sit above.

Overall an awesome place to spend a couple of hours on a stunning summer's day. I hope you all had a great weekend too :D

The Land of Fire and Ice, Sunrise Over Vestrahorn, Iceland

One of the most pleasurable aspects of being a full time professional landscape photographer who runs workshops in various parts of the world is that I am in the incredibly fortunate position to be in some of the world's most spectacular scenery at the best times of the year and every now and then you come across a view that stops you in your tracks and leaves you almost speechless (I say almost because it is me that I am talking about ;-) )

But what a morning this was back in October 2017 during one of the most beautiful subtle starts to a day I can ever remember. This unusual view of the mighty Vestrahorn was taken from the grounds of our hotel near Jökulsárlón.

I set up the camera along with my clients on either side of me and we all captured this stunning view. The sky initially had a gorgeous hints of pink in it whilst the ocean by contrast was a beautiful shade of blue but the colour suddenly grew and grew until it exploded in colour.

But when you have a view like this, you cannot complain at all when standing there all quiet and respectful and you breathe in the salty air and feel the breeze gently brushing past your face, it certainly has you feel alive and grateful to experience such moments. I hope you all like it.

End Of Day, Crosby Beach, Merseyside

In preparation for my one day long exposure workshop that I ran last Sunday on the Merseyside coastline, I decided to pop down to Crosby Beach last week to capture some new images.

I was at the beach photographing the life sized Antony Gormley statues after Antony himself had recently visited to oversee the repositioning of ten of the one hundred statues installed.

www.theguardian.com/artanddesign/2021/jun/14/antony-gorml...

However, my attention turned to the sun as it slowly set in a blaze of colour. It was wonderful just watching it slowly sink marking the end of another day. I hope you enjoy the image :D

My 'Clear Outside' weather app mentioned nothing of mist being present at Bled, where I am based, so I surfaced at 7am, showered, nipped to McDonald's for breakfast, and ventured towards a lovely little place called Planini Zajamniki, which has a selection of cute, wooden lodges that nestle in a valley below you. It's rather a famous location on Instagram.

However, en-route there and while driving 6km along the gravel road, heavy mist descended in the forests all around me. I did not know where to look first such were the amazing atmospheric scenes on both sides of me. I was in seventh heaven although keeping one eye on the gravel road was a must otherwise a quick trip down into the trees would follow and I did not want that.

On arriving at Planini Zajamniki, I could only see one wooden cabin so I spent some time there working on different compositions before moving on up the road where I came across this section of forest. I was looking down into the forest from the road and the trees looked spectacular in the mist so there was nothing for it but to pull over and spend a couple of hours in there.

This image was just one of a handful that I shot and I have sympathetically edited it. Removing a little contrast and slightly holding back the saturation of the colours. I like the result.

What do you think?

I took this shot while running a 1-2-1 tuition day in the Lakes with David, a client of mine last Wednesday. David had his camera set up on my Benro TMA48CXL tripod and had it facing east up the valley looking towards Bow Fell. I decided while he was setting up to shoot handheld, YES I SAID HANDHELD because I very rarely shoot handheld.

This lovely lone tree down in the valley along the River Esk (located just behind the trees) looked stunning when the light drifted over it, especially with the directional lighting darkening the trees in the background. I thought that it was worth a shot.

I rather like the photo. Your thoughts?

This wonderful and iconic viewpoint of the red boulder that sits within a rock pool and surrounded by sand lies dormant on the beach of Uttakleiv. I have seen this viewpoint time after time and wondered exactly where it lay. Well I have included a screen shot of the location on Google Maps in the comment box below for those interested.

On arriving, we quickly located the boulder and it did actually look like a monster's eyeball and I was surprised as often these things are 'made' to look like something else but it actually does look like an eyeball.

The rocks that line the shoreline nearby are fantastic and well worth spending a couple of hours photographing. Each beach that I have visited in Lofoten has its own features and points of interest and that is what makes Lofoten a joy to visit.

Tuscany Photography Workshop

21st - 26th Sept 2020

melvinnicholsonphotography.co.uk/product-category/tuscany...

.

.

This has to be one of my favourite images captured in Tuscany this past week and trust me, I've taken a fair number of images and seriously enjoyed doing so too. Tuscany is quite an incredible place that has me feel happier just for being here but with camera in tow, extra happy.

So last night I took the advice from my good buddy and fellow photographer / workshop leader Rodney O Callaghan and I parked the Jeep and wandered down into the field where he instructed me to and this was the view. Isn't it just spectacular?

Compositionally this works so much better than my previous attempt a couple of nights ago when I wandered down to where Russell Crowe was stood in a wheat field in the movie 'Gladiator' (which is 20 years old this year. Can you believe it?).

I arrived at 6pm, around an hour or so before sunset and this had the sun sit low in the sky which cast a gorgeous, soft side light across the landscape. That winding road that leads up to the Podere Terrapille guesthouse. You can stay there if you wish. www.terrapille.it/

A brand new edit of an image I captured October last year during my autumn workshop in Iceland.

Arnarstapi is a small coastal village with a fishing harbour and these wonderful rocky sea stacks set against the stunning Mt Stapafell. This white house is beautifully positioned to be included in photographs. It's like the builder/owner knew exactly where to put it to please me, ha, ha.

I am really looking forward to heading back in October for what is my favourite time of the year, autumn with the changing of the colours. I was genuinely blown away by the scenery in October last year and for me, I prefer it to the full blown winter landscape.

Lofoten Photo Workshop - Nov 2022

melvinnicholsonphotography.co.uk/photography-workshops/lo...

Aurora Borealis Lights Up Lofoten, Flakstad, Norway

I have been revisiting my images from my last visit to Lofoten in February 2020 this afternoon and I came across this image that I had not edited yet so here it is.

I took my six clients along to perhaps the most popular spot to shoot them from, Flakstad Beach. This is such an easy location to reach, it's pretty central, has a big car park and even toilets for those waiting hours to see the green stuff in the sky appear.

We arrived at 10pm and stayed a couple of hours. It's a very quick two minute walk down to the beach where wonderful reflections of the nearby mountain can be seen in the water. All of my clients (and I of course) had huge smiles on our faces as we witnessed the eight wonder of the world (in my eyes anyway) and for some, it was their first time seeing the aurora.

Seeing how happy the aurora has people feel always makes me smile and feel good. It is just such an amazing phenomenon to see with your own eyes.

If you would like to experience it for yourself, come and join me for a week in Lofoten this November. Our base is a gorgeous seven bedroom house near Ramberg (not far from where this image was taken) complete with a six person hot tub on the wooden decking.

WOW, what a morning I experienced on Tuesday with my good friend Stephen Cheatley. We decided at 1am, to visit Jodrell Bank as a fierce lightning storm was fast approaching. Once we were in position inside the back of Stephen's VW van for safety (and to seek shelter from the heavy rain).

The power and intensity of a full blown lightning storm is exhilarating and humbling as everything around you illuminates incredibly brightly. This particular shot was captured at 1.53am at perhaps the height of the storm. Lightning was flashing in every direction and in quick succession too. It felt amazing to be experiencing it first hand and it certainly has you feel alive yet small in the presence of something so powerful.

Vestrahorn, my favourite location in Iceland, looks ethereal, atmospheric and dramatic all at the same time.

This shot was captured while leading a workshop back in Oct 2018 and the conditions were perfectly suited to capturing this oceanside 1,500ft mountain. We ventured down to the water's edge as the tide rolled in and out. I have yet to see the waves properly crash in onto this beach so it makes for a great, safe spot to set up your tripod and spend an hour or two.

Batman Mountain is a nickname for the mountain on the furthest right in the far background. If you look closely, you'll see that the shape of the mountain summit looks remarkably like the Batman logo. Isn't it amazing? I have included the Batman logo in the first comment box for you to compare.

I returned from spending a glorious week on the gorgeous island of Crete in Greece yesterday and this morning I start the almighty task of reviewing my images and deciding which ones are going to make the blog that I shall be writing this coming week and let me tell you, it's a damn tough task.

But we'll start today off with some happiness as this lovely restaurant that I stumbled upon in the ancient part of Chania filled me with joy due to yellow being my favourite colour (I bet surprised a few of you who thought red was, lol).

There is a lot I like about the scene here from the obvious colour palette to the pot plants that line up on the steps to the choice of wooden furniture and even the fact that you can just about peer in through the main doors to the tables inside. Crete really is a mecca for this sort of photography.

Little wonder why I cannot wait to return April 2020 to run a workshop there. If you are interested in joining me, give me a shout and I shall put you on the waiting list when more information becomes available which will be around Thursday/Friday.

Feel FREE TO SHARE if you wish and have a mellow yellow Sunday folks.

Wave Action, Isle of Harris, Scotland

Traigh Bheag is my favourite beach on the Isle of Harris. Why? It's one of those beaches that has a perfectly angled shoreline shelf that creates wonderful rolling waves in the background as the white foamy water runs in and around the beautifully shaped rocks. Go at half tide and capture the magic.

On this particular day, the waves were rolling in hard and fast and I suggested to my six lovely clients that they might want to capture the waves high up from the roadside, partly to be safe as the tide was raging and secondly because the viewpoint of the waves from above looked amazing.

So I set up my camera while assisting those who had opted to stay close by and my intention was to capture the waves around half a second so as to soften the water a little while still retaining texture. I hope you all like it.

I returned from the amazing island of Skye very late last night and I was so looking forward to editing this image that I shot at the Old Man on Thursday.

Despite the weather being somewhat 'challenging' at times during my five day workshop, we all came away with some gold in the images we took. More often or not the harsher the weather, the more rewarding it can be to be out there, braving the elements with your camera.

A HUGE THANKS must go out to my four clients (Jean, Lauren, Jonathan and John) for being fantastic company this week and I look forward to seeing their images on social media.

Have a great Saturday folks and may the colours of the rainbow shine down over you today.

Aurora Over Stac Pollaidh, Assynt, Scotland

Ah, so it seems that I did capture the aurora when I arrived in Assynt on Friday 17th Sept then. Now that I have returned home, I am able to look through the images properly and although the best of the aurora in Assynt was perhaps around 9pm, the clouds started rolling in after 10pm (when I arrived).

Nonetheless, I am delighted to have caught at least some of the aurora over the iconic Stac Pollaidh. I spent a wonderful nine days away travelling around Assynt, Sutherland (the northern coast of Durness) and a couple of days on Skye to finish. It is fair to say that the weather has been erm, well let's just say, 'challenging' but if you want dramatic images, you need dramatic weather.

I cannot wait to return to Assynt to run my five night workshop that starts on the 3rd Oct. So if you are after capturing some stunning scenery of Scotland, come and join me. I have a beautiful seven bedroom home booked just a few hundred feet from the beach in Clashnessie.

Sunset, Frozen Island, Vestrahorn, Iceland

This is the most beautiful sunset I have captured on camera at Vestrahorn in all my ten visits. Taken last week while running my Iceland winter workshop.

The colour in the sky started to build with some really interesting clouds moving in. I was not expecting the colour to turn like it did and when Allie, one of my lovely clients, saw this scene, I simply had to join her and shoot it (thanks Allie, what a great find).

This section of water had frozen and reflected the colour just beautifully while I also love the small island of yellow marram grass on the black volcanic sand. Iceland sure has some spectacular vistas and Vestrahorn is my favourite because time after time, it delivers some outstanding views and photos.

I cannot wait to return to Iceland in Nov 2022 and again in Feb 2023. If you would like to join me, click on the link below.

Uttakleiv Beach turned out to be my favourite beach in Lofoten without a shadow of a doubt. Having primarily visited the beach to find and photograph the iconic and world famous 'monster's eye' rock pool (which I did), my thoughts turned to other compositions that lay in wait nearby. I did not have to wait long.

A few metres to the left of the monster's eye had these amazing rock formations catch my eye and my attention for an hour or so. I really did not want to leave when the time came but rest assured that when I return in early February to run my workshop (places still available by the way), Uttakleiv shall demand my upmost attention and quite happily so too.

In this image, the light fast fading fast as the end of the day arrived all too quickly. The skies darkened with what appeared to be an impending storm and the waves rushed towards me through the narrow channel between the stunning dark rocks. I felt energised, excited and enthused to just be standing there witnessing such beauty. It was at this very point that Lofoten captured my heart, mind and soul. What an experience. .

I took my clients down to Elgol yesterday as overnight, fresh snow had fallen and I knew that the Black Cuillins would look beautiful as a backdrop to the high tide that would surround the detailed and wonderful rocks on the shoreline.

I wasn't wrong.

The water was calm, the whole place felt serene and peaceful and quite unlike the Elgol I have come to know and love. I revelled in the conditions and I am pleased to say that even the rain stayed away.

Lightning Strikes Over Shingle Street, Suffolk

After thirty six days on the road, I have finally returned home (thank heavens my sat nav remembered where I live as I'd almost forgotten, ha, ha). So here's a newly edited image from the 10,000 photos that I took.

I visited Shingle Street in Suffolk a couple of weeks ago and no sooner had I stepped onto the pebbled beach, the heavy clouds rolled over me and before long, the almighty roar of thunder filled the air while the odd lightning bolt illuminated the sky.

Standing on an open beach of shingle, the clattering sound of the stones underneath my feet, could not compete with the drama that was taking place overhead. Fast paced clouds grew ever darker and the whole place took on a really menacing feel, especially as I was more than aware that I was exposed to the weather above, especially the lightning strikes.

However, the scene drew me in and before long I was firing off so many images in the hope of capturing a strike or two and before long, I struck lucky. This scene is looking straight out over the ocean from the beach and the energy that filled the air was electric (quite literally). I cannot wait for the big summer thunderstorms to roll on in to entertain me at night.

JOIN ME on my Five Day Northern Lights Iceland Workshop

15th - 20th October 2020

melvinnicholsonphotography.co.uk/product-category/iceland...

Today I managed to slip in a little photo editing of a few shots from my Iceland workshop that I ran last week and this is one that I wanted to share with you all. It is the glorious sea arch called Gatklettur at Arnarstapi. Now this is a dramatic place that sees fierce waves crashing against the cliff face to my left and water is often found flying through that little hole in the arch on the right.

On this particular late morning, the light was sublime. Leaving our accommodation (Budir Hotel), the sky was as dark as night with an apocalyptic atmosphere all around us and this excited me, however once on location in Arnarstapi, the clouds broke up and turned a beautiful golden orange colour.

If there's one thing that I love about Iceland during the winter months (and there are plenty of things that I love), it is that the light is stunning. It hangs low and helps to create an other worldly look sometimes. So I was well placed to maximise my time at this arch. The fresh snowfall was most welcome as it helped create a gorgeous base to my composition.

Here is a tip of mine that I employed while shooting this scene. The arch stands isolated from the headland but from the direction of the viewing platform (where I shot it from), the cliffs to the left often blend into the arch itself. On this occasion, I used the power of the ocean to help me isolate the arch by waiting for a very large wave to hit the base of the cliff face, pound up into the air to hide the cliff before clicking the shutter button. It's a technique that works especially well at this location.

There are few places more magical, more inspirational, more stirring than the utterly spellbinding series of waterfalls on the Glen Brittle river on the Isle of Skye, including the iconic Fairy Pools and this wonderful waterfall affectionately nicknamed the Washing Machine Falls.

One of the joys in photographing this particular waterfall is the wonderful channel that not only contains some gorgeous boulders and rocks but the colour of the water within the channel is a stunning shade of green. I have visited this place so many times and yet the sense of anticipation you experience during the thirty minute wander down and then up the trail that leads you to some of the finest small waterfalls, aqua green water plunge pools and even an underwater arch the UK has to offer is palpable.

The geology in this area is stunning with a million compositions of a million images to capture.

We arrived in the car park in the dark at 6.10am and within five minutes it was full. In that instance you have to drive the 12km road out of Moraine back to the main road where there are marshalls manning the road junction. If the car park is full, you will not be allowed to enter and as cars vacate the car park and exit the main road, in goes the next car that is waiting, hence why it's so important to arrive very early.

However the views are well worth dragging your backside out of bed at 5am for, as I'm sure you will agree. On this particular morning, we benefited from some recent snow fall on the summits of Mount Little (3,088m), Mount Bowlen (3,072m), Tonsa Peak (3,057m), Mount Perren (3,051m), Mount Allen (3,310m) and Mount Tuzo (3,246m) left to right.

It's funny when you see a photo posted by a fellow photographer of a place they recently visited and it immediately reminds you of a time when you visited it with your camera.

In this case the photographer is Phil Norton and I shall post his image below in the comment boxes. He's a Nisi Ambassador so if anyone requires any information on filters, he's a great guy to ask.

The place is the little fishing tarn of Llyn Y Dywarchen in Snowdonia. The date was Saturday 5th August 2011, the time 10pm. I visited this wonderful little place and decided that the rowing boats needed some illumination, so out came the head torch and fifteen seconds later, voilà

I hope you all like it. Have a great day guys and girls.

I am looking through the many images I took in Iceland a couple of weeks ago and I thought that I would properly edit this utterly amazing scene of the northern lights over the mighty 1,500ft Vestrahorn.

Just standing there with a couple of my clients until 5am watching one of nature's most spectacular and awe inspiring displays is beyond magical. There are times in ones life as a landscape photographer when you have to pinch yourself to have you remember that you are not experiencing a dream but that reality really is just as good when views like this are present. This was one such moment.

Four DAY LAKE DISTRICT AUTUMN WORKSHOP

I just LOVE this place. It is one of my favourite views of the Lake District. There is a house on that island that is owned by the National Trust and those that live there pay £40,000 a year to do so. You can read all about it here in an article the daily Mail wrote back in 2013. Enjoy.

I took this image yesterday morning during my 1-2-1 tuition day with a new client. Sadly the light failed to materalise during sunrise but it was still lovely to be out and about.

The rain fell shortly so a quick thirty minute drive down to Coniston has us bathed in radiant sunshine for the rest of the day.

Loch Ard Gorge, Great Ocean Road, Victoria, Australia

Isn't this just one of the finest coastal views you've ever seen? Views like this is what had me return to photograph the mightily impressive and truly stunning Great Ocean Road in Australia.

I remember driving this route on several occasions way back in 2003 while I spent a year backpacking around Australia and New Zealand. I was entranced by its sheer beauty and of course way back then I visited with nothing more than a 3.2 mega pixel Sony compact camera. I have been dying to return for years and two weeks ago I did just that.

As I set up the camera, the storm clouds were whipping through at a fair old rate bringing with it more than a hint of threatening rain and just as I captured this scene, the heavens opened, torrential rain fell and I just managed to return to the car before drowning, lol.

I hope you all enjoy the image and please feel free TO SHARE if you wish. Have a great weekend everyone :D

WOW, it was a hell of a sunrise this morning at Derwentwater near Keswick. Arriving on location at 6.15am with my Andrew, my 1-2-1 client for two days, we quickly set up our cameras and I fired off this shot whilst Andrew was setting up.

I have visited this location on numerous occasions forever hopeful of capturing a stunning sunrise and today I got it. Am I happy? You betcha.

I hope you all had a wonderful day too. Tomorrow morning the weather forecast is predicting great things so we're off at 5am in search of some magic again. This landscape photography malarky is quite a nice way to live a life wouldn't you say? :D

I remember this evening well from my week on the gorgeous island of Crete in Greece in April 2019. I had driven to the end of a single track unpaved road and wandered over several jagged, sharp rocks to stand at this location and admire the view.

As the sun started dipping behind some low lying clouds, it cast a wonderful, warm golden light on the rocky cliff face in the distance. It wasn't the most comfortable position to be situated in as the water rushed in and up high on the odd occasion but how could I not resist this beautiful view?

I love this tree and I had an opportunity during a 1-2-1 with a new client back last week to capture it during a wonderful misty morning. Knowing exactly where to head to in when the weather closes in in the Lakes is essential in capturing the right image at the right time. I have spent over ten years visiting and photographing the Lake District and I have built up an enviable amount of knowledge and experience shooting in the most beautiful National Park in the UK (which is now an UNESCO World Heritage Site as of the 9th July 2017)

I am so fortunate to live a short distance from this stunningly beautiful park and with over 18 million visitors a year, I know that I am not alone in appreciating its beauty.

If you would like to spend a day in the Lake District with your camera and me on a 1-2-1, please contact me to discuss a date when we're both available. You can find out more here. www.melvinnicholsonphotography.co.uk/1-2-1-private-tuition/

Back in January, Chris (my workshop client) and I were incredibly fortunate to be able to witness a solar storm over the ice lagoon at Jökulsárlón before venturing onto the Diamond Beach to finish off capturing the wonderful greens and purples over the icebergs on the beach.

Honestly, I am absolutely blessed to be able to witness some amazing scenes during my life as a full time pro landscape photographer but standing on a black, sandy volcanic beach watching the eighth wonder of the world (to me anyway) really is right up there among those experiences.
