I captured this truly stunning scene on Friday during day two of my two day workshop. We arrived nice and early to give us time to look around and see what my clients would like to shoot. After giving them some advice on which part of this wonderful landscape I would photograph, we all set up and waited for the magic to happen.
There were some fantastic cloud structures which held in the gorgeous orange colours. The reflection of the sun on the water was a joy to witness and my clients were so happy to have experienced a beautiful sunrise. psssst. Don't tell anyone, so was I ;-)
I hope you all had a great weekend :D

A brand new image for you all and one of my favourite subjects to shoot. Iceland has some absolutely gorgeous wooden churches in the most picturesque places and this one at Buðir is one of the most iconic in Iceland (along with Myrdal Church at Vik).
Set on a lava field in Staðarsveit, the volcano of Snæfellsjökull makes a wonderful backdrop (seen in other photos of mine but behind me in this one).
The Buðir black church is one of 3 black churches in Iceland and they are black because the exterior wood is painted with pitch, the same material you see on boat hulls. The reason for this is to protect it from the harsh Icelandic winters. This is a method that has worked well for over 100 years as the date stamp of the church on the cross above the door reads '1847'.

What a fantastic place I visited back in August 2019 when I was putting the loaned Olympus E-M1 MK2 camera through its paces. I also trailed Kase's 16 Stop Filter which performed brilliantly with no colour cast whatsoever and I shot this scene for nearly five minutes. Now that's what I call a long exposure.
I sell Kase Filters for those who may be interested. Head to my website for more details and/or to purchase.

I was told that this boat is due to be cut up shortly and be sold for scrap so if you want to shoot it for yourself, get yourself up to Roa Island as soon as possible. Go when there's an 8 metre plus tide to ensure there's enough water around the boat.
There's a free car park 100 feet away too 😁

My good friend Tony Higginson and I ran a three day workshop in Dorset this week and despite the BBC weather predicting mist every morning this week, Thursday was the day to venture out with our five clients.
Arriving at the hill overlooking the castle an hour before sunrise at 5am, we were met by a blanket of mist so thick that the castle was not visible. By 6.30am however, the mist lifted and returned several times until we left at 7.30am. This image was captured at 7.10am when the sun rose high enough in the sky to fill the sky with crepuscular rays which were absolutely magical to witness let alone capture on camera.
Photographing the hugely photogenic 1,000 year old Corfe Castle has been high on my bucket list of UK locations to shoot and finally I can tick that box and it feels bloody marvellous I can tell you.
p.s. That vertical line in the clouds in the middle distance is a communication mast for those wondering.

Well this is not a scene that you see very often. An abandoned piano dumped on the beach, apparently from a music video that was filmed there shortly before.
I thought that it was worth twenty minutes of my time and a shot or two while I was there. Vestrahorn just happens to be one of my favourite places in Iceland for the views are staggeringly beautiful with a million different compositions available. You could spend a week there getting to know the area better although it'll cost you around a fiver a day per person to gain access by car as the road down to the beach is a private toll road.

The Sound of Raasay from Rigg Viewpoint, Isle of Skye, Scotland
I returned to the Isle of Skye mid-November on my own for three days before running my five day workshop there, my first since February 2019 and I had forgotten just how spectacular a place it is.
This truly stunning scene was shot at mid-morning from Rigg Viewpoint on the east coast, just ten miles north of Portree. I was driving by en-route to Portree when I spotted this sublime light and I just had to stop and spend half an hour there capturing this magnificent view and also the one that I have shared in the comment box below. Both images were taken two minutes apart.
The light and the dramatic sky were quite something to witness. I underexposed the camera a little to ensure that the bright spots of sunlight on the water were not blown out but nonetheless, it was a dramatic scene.
I hope you all enjoy the photo :D

This is the third image I have edited from my sunrise shoot at Windermere on Sunday during my one day workshop that I was running. My three clients were loving the conditions just as much as I was and in between jumping between Carl, Dave and Dean to make sure they were fine, I fired off a few shots of my own.
This scene was taken a few minutes after the previous two images that I have shared since Sunday and the Langdale Pikes were visible through the mist in the distance. This is my favourite fell range in the Lake District because they are so distinctive.
I hope you like it and after responding to a few enquiries about whether these images are for sale as prints and canvases, I can confirm that they are. If you are interested, please let me know.

The UK's current conditions very much remind me of my time spent in Iceland a couple of weeks ago when we were being battered by 90mph gale force winds, snow blizzards and up to -15 degree temperatures.
It was incredibly harsh weather, some of the worst the Icelanders had seen in many years but the other side of the coin is that the scenery was beyond stunning with many subjects isolated against their surroundings.
Here is one such subject and a church that is always an absolute pleasure to photograph. The church at Vik is elevated high up over the town below and this gives you commanding views of the ocean, the iconic sea stacks and the hotel below.
A whiteout started as we arrived hence the somewhat soft nature of the image. It was so beautiful being there in person, not just at Vik but in Iceland full stop. I did not want to leave.

I was so excited yesterday to come across this gorgeous old tree that was buried in the sand of Kaka Point beach. The sky was dramatic with rain threatening during my time spent setting up the camera.
I chose my composition carefully to have the tree angled in such a way that it looked like a creature was slowly climbing out of the sand. The whole scene really fascinated me and I spent a good hour honing my composition to this point.
The lighting was sublime and the water was just about right to have it rush in and around the tree. It was such a magical place to spend some time and I was told that the tree was positioned high up on the rocks on the shoreline back in January but since the storms recently, the tree moved onto the beach. Knowing this I am not expecting to see this tree in this position when I'll revisit April 2020.

On dry Land, Sunrise at Dungeness, Kent
For me, the pure joy of being out at 6.15am in the middle of May is that I got to experience the dawn of a new day all alone. Walking around the eerie shingle headland of Dungeness with my camera allowed me time to stop and stare, breathe slowly, reflect on life, absorb the views, and to just take in the moment without pressure or expectation. THESE are my kind of mornings.
There are quite a few boats that are hauled onto the beach with steel cables and fuel driven winches. I find that they make wonderful subjects, especially when set against a gorgeous colourful sky at sunrise. I love the muted detail in the shadows while the heavy laden clouds framed the boat beautifully well. It all came together to present to me a wonderful scene that I had to capture on camera.
I hope you enjoy the view too. Have a lovely weekend everyone.

Believe it or not, I took this photo back on the 6th October 2020 and I have been sitting on it ever since, mainly because I wanted to use the image to help promote my Oct 2021 Slovenia workshop which has just been released so I feel that I can share the image with you all now.

I filmed a timelapse of this gorgeous misty morning (which you can see below on my Flickr channel) and you can see the exact time I took this image if you stop the timelapse at 15 seconds. It really was that amazing.

Lake Bled has provided me with so many memorable mornings and I am so blessed to have the images to remind me. I hope that you enjoy seeing what I have experienced since arriving in Slovenia at the end of Sept. I have three more weeks to go yet before I return home so I expect a couple more sunrise shoots down at the lake before I board the plane to return home.

Last Fall of Light over the Arched Bridge Over Mangartski Potok, Triglav National Park, Slovenia
Back to the stunning country of Slovenia for today's post and a wander through my many, many thousands of images taken during my three months over there last October, November and December. This particular day in early November had me decide to drive up the 6500ft mountain road of the awesome (and to some the terrifyingly high) Mangart Pass.
This pass has some truly outstanding views from up high but this one of the gorgeous arched bridge caught my attention as I descended down to the base of the pass. The scale of the mountains is beautifully shown here when compared to the gorge below. The way the light falls on the mountains themselves has them look three dimensional as the crags and cracks are either bathe in light or hidden in shadows.
Isn't it just stunning? I cannot wait to return in October to show my six workshop clients the views that I so enjoyed for months late last year. They will be astounded and left in awe, of that, there will be no doubt.

Okay, so I feel I should open this passage with an apology for sharing yet another image from my Sunday morning shoot at Windermere. This is the fourth image from those I took and it really was like Christmas had come early for me as I ran around capturing the gorgeous scenes of the mist rolling around the boats.
I set up this shot of the three boats and the backdrop had all but disappeared due to the mist which suited me just fine. Mornings like these are worth the early start for sure.
I hope you all like it and for those who are interested, I will be offering these as prints in the following sizes plus £10 p&p. Canvases also available. Contact me for prices.

I visited this wonderful stretch of coastline back in August last year for the first time and what a peach of a place it is during high tide. True the sea spray made shooting these wonderfully textured groynes difficult but anything worth having should not come easy in my opinion.
The colour of the single marries up beautifully with the tone of the wooden. The sky was really atmospheric and as soon as I saw this scene, I knew that I would have to spend a good thirty minutes there trying to do the view justice.
Hopefully, I have done that. Feel free to SHARE if you wish and I hope you all like it.

Today is one of those blurgh full-on, miserable winter days and I am on day eight of my ten day quarantine since returning home from Slovenia. I have not ventured outdoors and shall not until I am permitted to do so but the silver lining to that dark cloud is that I have the time to look back through my tens of thousands of images taken over the last couple of years and this one from my time running my October 2019 workshop in the Italian Dolomites really stood out to me.
So I took my five lovely clients up to the summit of the Seceda, a remarkable 8,200ft mountain range, to capture the mid-morning light. On arriving at the gondola station, we were informed that snow had fallen overnight and that it was sub-zero temperatures on top. So six €32 tickets were purchased and we boarded the large gondola to the mid-way station to board a smaller gondola. The views up there were staggering.
Stepping out from the gondola station onto the freshly fallen snow while the views all around were bathed in lovely light was just magical. Yes, it was a tad chilly but when the clouds rolled in and started to swirl around the peaks, it became very atmospheric.
It was well worth enduring the cold temperatures but on the flip side, we got to enjoy a hot chocolate and lunch in the summit restaurant.
If anyone is interested in joining me this October, I have only two places left.

Here's another 'creative' image that I captured of the wonderfully evocative sounding Canadian Pacific Railway train as it hurtles past me at the junction of Castle Mountain, which features in the background.
I wanted a long exposure of a train but not knowing which wagons were likely to be attached, you really are hoping for the best and some colour to boot. In this respect, I was not to be disappointed as these colourful red and orange wagons helped to create a really colourful image.
Although the main carriages were closer to the front of the engine while bringing up the rear were these empty skeleton frames which help to showcase the gorgeous Castle Mountain behind.
The tricky bit in composing the shot was trying to ensure that the mount was visible above the train as it passed by and to this end, I just about got that right. The other issue that I encountered although I did get away with it, is the fierce draft created as the train flies by.
On a long exposure shutter speed, this can unsettle the camera and cause camera shake although due to the highish speed of the train, only a shutter speed of 1.3 seconds was needed to capture the scene. P.s. A decent carbon fibre tripod dug securely into the snow helps tremendously. I used a Benro TMA48CXL.

The Old Man of Storr is a remarkable place to spend some time and for me, is one of the most spectacular locations to see the sunrise anywhere in the UK. Sure, you have to endure over an hour's hike up in the dark before dawn and often in cold conditions but the rewards are magical.
The main rock is 160ft tall and for scale, notice the man bottom right corner?
I have a five-day workshop on Skye 2nd-6th Oct 2017 if anyone is interested? Only five attendees with two places already sold.http://www.melvinnicholsonphotography.co.uk/product/isle-skye-workshop-2nd-6th-october-2017/

Four DAY LAKE DISTRICT AUTUMN WORKSHOP
Tues 31st October - Fri 3rd November 2017 £795

I took this image on Saturday at the end of a cracking one day workshop that I ran in and around Ullswater in the gorgeous Lake District. The weather was a little challenging at the start of the day but by mid-afternoon, the sun came out to play and a trip back to Martindale to capture this stunning scene just had to be done.
If you love the Lake District but desire the peace and quiet of a stunning little-known valley, try paying Martindale a visit (east side of Ullswater past Howtown). This view here is from the small road bridge that takes you over Howegrain Beck with Dale Head on the left and Beda Fell on the right.
I do LOVE the Lake District. WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE PLACE IN THE UK TO PHOTOGRAPH?

WOW, what a sunset me and my 1-2-1 tuition day client Ian experienced this afternoon in the Lake District. This sure was an incredible sunset. The clouds were amazing.
This photo is a blend of two photos, the mountain and sky were taken at 1/15 second while the water was shot at 3.2 seconds. The reason for blending the two together is that I felt that the clouds were just a tad soft at 3.2 seconds and I preferred the sharp and detailed look of the clouds instead.
It sure was the most impressive and evocative sunset that I have ever witnessed in the Lakes District to date and I have been photographing the Lakes twelve years now and visiting it a great deal longer.
This image is a blend of two photos. One for the clouds and the fells and one for the water. This allowed me to capture the clouds nice and sharp and detailed and the water a short exposure to soften it down a little.

This is a panorama image made up of six vertical images stitched together in Photoshop CC. Sometimes a single wide angle shot of a scene before me is simply not enough. A scene that offers so much and is beyond stunning requires more care and attention than a single shot can capture.
A panorama of six images allows me to create a huge file which can be printed very, very large on a wall and I might well do that for this image. For me, there are quite a few elements that make this image so special to me.
The blue river on the far left, the lone tree on the right, both kind of balance each other out. The gently sloping hill from the upper third right down to the lower third left sits at ease to my eyes. The gorgeous and subtle shifts in the recession from the more dominant foreground hill to the much less dominant background of Stac Pollaidh. There's almost a painterly feel to this image and I like it. I hope you all do too.

I LOVE these old boats and in particular the two metal bodied ones (the rest are wooden and completely rotten). I took three clients down to Fleetwood yesterday to capture these boats in water but I took a quick shot once the water had retreated. The sky and clouds looked superb.

Today, I visited the gorgeous and impressive Snežnik Castle. It is located about an hour south of Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia,. I arrived an hour before sunset to find this lovely body of water nestling up against the north side wall of the castle which offered up great reflections.
However, it was the blue hour that I was waiting for as I hoped that the castle would be lit up and sure enough, the single main light came on and had the front section of the castle glow, which contrasted beautifully well with the blue sky above.
This 13th century castle is stunning and set in a lovely section of parkland. I had the whole place to myself and I really enjoyed waiting for the right time to photograph it. However, the icing on the cake was when a lady arrived momentarily to enter the main, circular tower to retrieve something. She switched on the main light for perhaps fifteen seconds, just as I was taking a thirty second image. Talk about great timing as the light really adds a lovely extra element to the image, especially as the light is reflected in the water too.
I hope you enjoy the image as much as I did photographing it. Click on the link below to read the info about the castle.

Today was spent travelling a couple of hours to a place called Solkan. Now, I bumped into a fellow photographer (Slovenian) yesterday at Kranjska Gora and he happened to mention this scene of the three bridges. I was intrigued enough to head down this morning to take a look.
True to form, the scene does look impressed for I absolutely love photographing industrial landscapes, power stations, large mills, factories, that kind of thing and this scene ticked all the boxes for me. Sadly the weather was a little flat and lifeless although, for this particular scene, I thought it suited perfectly.
The bridge at the bottom of the image is the Solkan Bridge, and with an arch span of 85 metres, it has the world's longest arch span of any railroad bridge (or so I believe anyway), mainly because later construction technology used reinforced concrete to build bridges (thanks Wikipedia).
It was built in 1905 but restored by the Italians in 1927 after a horrific blast saw the arch fall into the Soca River below. It measures 220 metres in length and 36 metres in height. It spans the gorgeous green coloured waters of the Soca River, itself a river measuring 138km in length and running through Slovenia into northeastern Italy.
I personally love this scene but do you? It was a shame that I did not see any trains running otherwise I would have loved to have captured one on the bridge itself but nevermind, maybe next time.
One quick point to mention is that I used my Kase 10 Stop ND filter to give me a shutter time of 30 seconds. This allowed for all the moving traffic to disappear from the image completely, therefore leaving a nice and clean image to enjoy. In truth, there were probably only around half a dozen cars to be seen in the entire scene but all the same, I did not want them featured in the image.

One Sunday morning in November (2020), I choose to shoot Jamnik Church at sunrise, a decision which was richly rewarded as the pre-dawn colours were amazing (photo to follow in the coming days) but once the sun had risen, my attention turned to the gorgeous little villages that nestle in the depths of the valleys in the local area.
So I opted to drive to Skofja Loka via the villages of Podbica, Selca, and Bukovica but it was these gorgeous row of trees that really caught my attention as I drove out of Dolenja Vas. On seeing them, I simply had to pull over and grab the camera and tripod.
I spent perhaps twenty minutes shooting these trees in a variety of formats and compositions but as often is the case, my first image was the one I settled on to edit. Sometimes gut feeling, intuition, and experience tell you that your first shot will be your best, not always of course but more often than not.
The sun had risen enough to my left to illuminate the trees yet the background trees were left in the shade. I knew that it would only be a matter of time before the hoar frost would defrost and leave the trees as bare as they were the day before so I had to work fast but these simple shots really appeal to me.

Water Under the Bridge, Ashness Bridge, Derwentwater, Lake District
Taken during my day spent alone in the Lake District back in August 2019. Derwentwater is my favourite part of the Lake District as there is so much to photograph that appeals to me (wooden jetties, boats, bays, packhorse bridges, a river, waterfalls, and of course the lake).
I checked the government's Flood Information Service website (flood-warning-information.service.gov.uk/sta.../5178) the night before I ventured up to the Lakes to see how high the water levels were at Lodore and the level was high, especially for the height of summer (shows you just how much water had fallen in that August). Knowing the level of the water locally, I decided that I would pay Ashness Bridge a visit as I suspected that there would be enough water to capture it looking in reasonably full force and I was correct.
The stormy skies above added to the atmosphere and the gorgeous lush, green foliage and trees all around reminded me that it was in fact summer (apparently).
Regarding the technique used to capture the water that you see, I opted for several shutter speeds from half a second all the way up to thirty but I eventually settled on this one at just 1.6 seconds, using my lovely Kase Polariser to darken the water a little while using a six stop ND filter to slow the water down enough to soften it but not too much so as to completely lose the detail in the water.

I am finding myself uttering 'WOW' more and more these days when out on location with my workshop clients and I mean it every time I say it but on this particular evening back in October 2019 when standing there looking over the sheer beauty of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Tre Cime di Lavaredo National Park and the Dreizinnenhütte / Rifugio Locatelli hut, it was breathtaking.
After what seemed like an age walking uphill to the viewpoint at 8,000ft with a 12kg camera backpack on with my five lovely clients, we were finally rewarded with a gorgeous sunset where the sky turned pinkish-blue while the warmth of the setting sun to our right cast a golden light across the landscape. This is without a doubt one of my top three views anywhere in the world. It is just beyond incredible.
Once everybody set up their tripods and cameras, I quickly fired off six vertical shots for a panorama that I eventually stitched together in Photoshop CC. Setting the white balance to a set Kelvin range rather than leave it in auto was a good move as the colour of the sky would have been very tricky to have matched up.
But when all said and done, all the technical aspects in capturing the image pale into insignificance when you will enjoy the memory in just standing there watching another day come to a close over some of the most remarkable scenery I have had the privilege to experience in person.

One of the locations I really wanted to visit on my recent visit up to the Fife coastline in Scotland was this wonderful zig zag breakwater wall and I was not disappointed.
St Monans is a small village in the East Neuk of Fife. Located just over 12 miles south of St Andrews, St Monans is the smallest of the East Neuk fishing ports. Here you’ll find an attractive village with many charming 17th and 18th century pantiled houses that crowd the harbourside. www.visitscotland.com/…/towns-vil…/st-monans-p239081
On arriving in the harbour, you would have absolutely no idea that this breakwater wall existed as it lies hidden on the ocean side of the harbour. You walk around to the left hand side of the harbour until you see a pair of metal ladders that allow you to climb up and stand on the harbour wall looking down at the waves as they crash against the wall below you.
You can feel the hits against the wall with the occasional wave reaching high enough to come up and over you (not to mention all over you). The wind was stiff during my visit and the challenge was keeping the filters clean. Shoot, wipe, shoot, wipe, shoot, wipe was the general order of things. Take some moist lens cleaning wipes with you would be my best advice but the experience was worth it for I got the shot I have been after for quite some time.

Aqua Coloured Peyto Lake, Canadian Rockies
Here is an image that I have just edited of the gorgeous Peyto Lake in Canada that I captured back in September. It is a panoramic made up of nine vertical images and what a stunning place it is.
I arrived on location pre-dawn and waited for the scene to open up in front of me as sunrise arrived. The lush green colour of the lake below is absolutely magical.
I cannot wait to return in January to run my Canadian Rockies winter workshop. We'll be based in Lake Louise, which is perfectly positioned to take advantage of the numerous locations locally.

The Sound of Raasay & the Skye Skyline, Isle of Skye, Scotland
I returned to the Isle of Skye mid-November on my own for three days before running my five day workshop there, my first since February 2019 and I had forgotten just how spectacular a place it is.
This truly stunning scene was shot at mid-morning from Rigg Viewpoint on the east coast, just ten miles north of Portree. I was driving by en-route to Portree when I spotted this sublime light and I ju8st had to stop and spend half an hour there capturing this magnificent view.
I decided to shoot the image in the square aspect ratio in-camera as that is exactly how I wanted to capture the image. The diagonal lines are dominating but they work perfectly to my eyes. I hope you all enjoy the photo too.

Here's an image that I have freshly edited today after looking through the thousands of images that i shot during my 26 day World Tour of the UK last July and August.
A fellow photographer and friend of mine Huw Alban joined me on location for a couple of hours before dashing off to head to work. We both witnessed a gorgeous morning with the most wonderful of skies adding interest, texture and some lovely shapes to the image.
If you have yet to visit Dungeness, do so. It's quite a strange little place. There's a large pebbled beach with residential houses littered around the circular road that takes you in and around the two nuclear power stations that exist on site (only one of them is still operational).
There is also a beautiful small tourist railway called Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch Railway present. It is a 90-year-old narrow (15in) gauge steam and diesel railway that stretches 14 miles from Hythe to Dungeness on the Channel coast.
But Dungeness for me is an eerie, seemingly desolated place. I sat in my minibus/makeshift campervan for almost eight hours while it rained heavily. I would look at an empty space that is punctuated with wooden sheds that house diesel generators that power the winches that allow the fishermen to drag the boats onto the pebbled beach.
For all its eeriness, it is a fantastic place for the landscape/seascape photographer. There is a wealth of compositions available. Go and visit it for yourself and let me know what you think.
I hope you like the image. Thanks for looking and as usual, feel FREE TO SHARE if you wish :D

Here's another dream location of mine, the spectacular Tre Mine di Laverado park in the Italian Dolomites. Here's an image of the moon rising as we were ascending out of the park from 8,000ft.
I, along with six wonderful workshop clients of mine back in October 2018, enjoyed seeing the last throes of light illuminating the peaks before the night sky dominated. If you have never visited this amazing park for yourself, put it on your bucket list for sure. You'll definitely not regret it.

Summer Blues, Copse of Trees, Yorkshire Dales
I have been after a shot of this gorgeous copse of trees in the Yorkshire Dales during the blue skies of summer for as long as I can remember and on Tuesday, the weather forecast was perfect so I threw the camera bag and tripod into the boot of my car and I dashed off up to Yorkshire.
On arriving, I saw these wonderful white clouds drifting over the field, and before long, the camera was ready to capture the scene. I fired off a dozen shots before settling on this one to edit once home. The inclusion of the clouds is essential to the overall interest and balance in my mind.
What do you think?

I am often asked, which do I prefer, sunrise or sunset and my answer is always the same, sunrise without a shadow of a doubt and looking at this image from running a workshop in the Outer Hebrides last November, you can see why.
This image captured at dawn is practically a 'straight out of camera' shot with minimal post processing needed. Isn't it just beautiful and of course Luskentyre Beach is one of the most famous beaches in the world and with good reason. It's always worth a pre-amble down along it pre-sunrise in the hope of some magical colour and on this particular morning, we got it.
Capturing some gold on camera makes the full Scottish breakfast back at the Harris Hotel in Tarbert all the sweeter and more enjoyable.
I am really looking forward to returning to Harris and Lewis to run two back to back workshops in November. If you're interested in joining me (assuming that everything is back to normal by then. Fingers crossed), click on the link below for details.

Four DAY LAKE DISTRICT AUTUMN WORKSHOP
Tues 31st October - Fri 3rd November 2017 £795
www.melvinnicholsonphotography.co.uk/product/lake-distric...
Taken last Friday during a workshop in the Lake District with a couple of lovely ladies. I set up the shot to demonstrate my new range of Nisi filters and in particular their 10 stop filter.
The weather conditions were perfect for long exposure photography with the clouds providing a wonderful backdrop to one of the most stunning views in the whole of the Lake District for me. Whatever the weather, time of the day and light, there's always a shot at this location.
The Nisi 10 stop filter captured the scene beautifully well with no light leakage from the holder and more importantly, no colour cast. I'm impressed with them so far.

Isthmus Bay, Derwentwater, Lake District
My favourite body of water in the Lake District (because there's only actually one lake in the Lake District, Bassenthwaite, the rest are either meres, tarns or waters) is Derwentwater.
For me, it has the greatest number of subjects to photograph, from the beautiful wooden steamers to the iconic Ashness Landing Pier, from marinas to wonderful little bays like Mantle and this one Isthmus.
Here is a ruined old concrete pier that is in a serious state of disrepair. As soon as I saw it a few weeks back for the first time, I knew that I had to get a shot of it. So I returned with my friend Phil Buckle a few weeks later when the weather was more favourable and I knew on location, that I wanted to create an infrared image of this scene.

Dreams Of A White Christmas Come True, Jamnik Church, Slovenia
OH WOW!!!
One of my bucket list photography challenges that I set myself some years ago was to photograph a gorgeous small church, in snow, all lit up. Well, today, having driven 20km from Bled to one of my favourite locations, Jamink Church, that bucket list challenge was ticked off. To throw some atmospheric heavy mist in too, was perhaps the icing on the cake.
So I arrived in good time before sunset, except that on the drive up the road that has many, many hairpins, the mist started forming, and before I parked the car, it was seriously misty with very little visibility. This had me change my original shooting position from the roadside to right in front of the church itself.
As I wandered down to the church, two local videographers, (Dragan and Marco whose names I found out), were wandering around with the intention of doing some filming but they ended up chatting to me and we stood for an hour talking about a whole range of subjects. What cracking guys they were and quite typical of the Slovenians that I have met on the road.
You can follow Dragan's Instagram feed here www.instagram.com/photocorax/
Anyhow, as the light started to disappear, the church lights came on and illuminate the church in a warm, soft glow and that suited the scene perfectly. As I wandered back to the car, walking in my snow boots through 12" of snow, I was more than happy with my visit to Jamnik. I shall return tomorrow for sunrise to see how the scene looks as daylight breaks but for now, I shall sit back, and look at this image and smile. I hope you do too.

There are few places that I visit that look so perfect, that they require little or no editing in Photoshop but my visit to the utterly mesmorising Alpe di Siusi in the Dolomites a couple of weeks ago was one such occasion.
There's something about Europe's highest Alpine meadow that radiates a softness, a sort of a 'Disney' look, so perfect it looks like a scene from an animation movie. With its 10,500ft mountain range, gorgeous trees and rolling hills complete with wooden alpine lodges dotted about the place, it's just beyond words really.

Landscape Photography Workshops & 1-2-1 Tuition
Taken on a three-day workshop that I ran last week in Dorset.
Arriving on the beach at Durdle Door in the middle of the afternoon during harsh light and pure blue skies have you stand and look around at what you can capture that might be even remotely interesting and unusual.
Then I spotted this lovely small cave-like indentation in the white chalky cliffs known as Bat's Head. What were the challenges in shooting from this viewpoint I hear you ask? lol.
Well, for starters, there's not much room in there and setting up a tripod is almost impossible. You certainly need a small travel tripod to even have a chance of setting it up. I had a huge tripod with me so I decided to shoot this scene handheld and furthermore I only needed to capture the scene once despite harsh contrast and a crazy depth of field issue. Saying that my Canon EOS R coped impeccably with the stabilisation of the image, the great depth of field leaving everything sharp to look at, from the rim of the cave to Durdle Door itself as well as the dynamic range coping with the varying degree of light.
The more I use the Canon EOS R, the more impressed I am with it.

Taken yesterday during a day's photography on my own in Yorkshire in preparation for my one day workshop in Muker, Gunnerside and West Burton today.
Firstly I must thank Edward Russell for making me aware of this wonderful waterfall in the most delightful of places, Haverdale Beck in Crackpot (what a great name Crackpot is and quite appropriate for me to spend some time there from those who know me, lol)
I arrived a little after lunch before making my way down to the base of the waterfall to spend a lovely two hours all alone photographing this wonderful waterfall. After spending some time walking and looking around for a decent composition, I eventually settled on these beautiful moss covered rocks (yes they really were that green). A Nisi Polariser made light work of the white light on the water in and around the rocks. I used a Nisi 0.6 Hard ND Grad filter to darken down the upper half of the image where the sunlight was flooding through. This in turn lightened up the lower half of the image and in particular the mossy rocks.
No other filters were needed to slow the water down. I also took four images and focused on four areas of the image before focus stacking them in Photoshop CC to ensure that it was sharp back to front. This also allowed me to shoot the scene at f8 which was my preferred aperture. I hope you like the image and if you wish to share it, please feel free. Many thanks in advance :D

This gorgeous little loch nestles just one mile east from the centre of Lochinver and it offers stunning views of Suilven and the trees reflected in the calm waters at dawn although this image was shot at dusk with a hint of wind to create texture in the water.
Parking the car in the free main car park and a brisk ten-minute walk down to the water's edge affords you this view. Isn't it just magical?
Assynt is full of outstanding scenery and my five workshop clients enjoyed the various places that I took them to autumn last year.

I have been wanting to put this panorama together and get it edited for months and finally I have found enough time to do so.
This image was taken during a workshop I ran back in Skye last February, and without a shadow of a doubt, this is the best sunrise I have experienced on the island since first visiting it way back in 2008.
We arrived at the Quiraing well before sunrise and having set up, all we had to do was to wait and wait for the colours to grow and grow and grow. I was almost speechless (I did say 'almost', lol) at the incredible beauty I was so privileged to witness.
This panorama is a collection of seven vertical images stitched together and edited in Photoshop CC.

Chiesa di Santa Barbara, La Val, South Tyrol, Dolomites, Italy
October 2019 saw me and my lovely five clients head north to the truly stunning region of La Val and in particular, this gorgeous little church that sits high up on a mountainside overlooking some amazing scenery in the South Tyrol region of The Dolomites.
We spent a good couple of hours there just wandering around looking for different compositions and using the light to its best effect as and when it arrived. The views all around were magnificent and yet again another reason why I love the Dolomites as much as I do.

WOW, WOW, WOW, what a place this is. I arrived here with a friend of mine Ed a couple of hours before sunset and a short fifteen minute walk from the car park had us standing on the shoreline of this utterly remarkable iceberg mountain lake.
Oh my word, this is where New Zealand seriously impresses you. As the sun slowly sunk down the mountains behind us and the last throws of light that lit up the peaks of these incredible mountains finally disappeared to be replaced by a billion stars that shone like precious and priceless diamonds, all that remains is you standing there feeling a little emotional and so thankful to be alive witnessing this quite incredible view.
New Zealand for those of you who have yet to visit and experience the breathtaking views for yourself, is quite rightly at the top of the list of countries to visit with a camera. I have had the very good fortune to have visited the country three times now and I honestly cannot wait to return at the start of May 2019 to run a ten day workshop.
All I will say is that if you have ever had a strong desire to fly to the other side of the world and be transported to fairy tale locations, go and DO IT!!! Either with me on a workshop or by yourself. The most important thing is that you experience it. Wait no longer, book the flight and be amazed by what you will see and experience.
