This location happens to be my favourite in Iceland (of the places I have visited anyway). The mighty Vestrahorn stands almost 1500ft high and towers over all that surrounds it. This huge section of gabbo rock dates back between eight and eleven million years and the site was used by the first settlers (Irish) before they were enslaved by Viking invaders (c.860). (www.icelandaurora.com)
These days however, whenever I approach the toll road (£8 per person paid to the cafe at the start of the road) and I look down towards the radar station and Vestrahorn on my left, a sense of excitement washes over me because I know that magic awaits me and has done so every time I have visited this location. Take your time to walk around and try to not walk into any future compositions for footprints in the soft black volcanic sand will ruin many a good shot.

WOW!!!
This view from where I stood back in February during my week away in the magical winter wonderland that is Lofoten in Norway will live on in my memory for some time to come.
I was stood by the water's edge looking down into the green icy water below that was so clear that I could see every last rock on the ocean floor some thirty to fifty feet down. It was quite incredible. Then the sun slowly set and over a period of around half an hour, the sky turned a gorgeous golden colour while small pieces of ice glided by below me.
This is a panorama put together from eleven vertical images and stitched together in Photoshop CC.
Lofoten in the winter is quite an amazing sight and I feel privileged to have experienced it. I cannot wait to return February 2020 to run another workshop.

Oh what a morning this was back in October during one of the most beautiful subtle starts to a day I can ever remember. This unusual view of the mighty Vestrahorn was taken from the grounds of our hotel near Jökulsárlón.
I set up the camera along with my clients on either side of me and we all captured this stunning view. The sky had a gorgeous tint of pink in it whilst the ocean by contrast was a beautiful shade of blue. I have brought out the colours a little more than the camera picked them up as I remember the scene more like this.
Either way, when you have a view like this, you cannot complain and when standing there all quiet and respectful, you breathe in the salty air and feel the breeze gently brushing past your face. It certainly makes you feel alive.

Rainbow Over the Callanish Standing Stones, Isle of Lewis, Outer Hebrides
This image was captured on New Year's Day morning in 2018 during some challenging weather but it was definitely worth hanging in there. When the rainbow appeared, I immediately moved into position and fired off a couple of shots before it disappeared.
That's the thrill of shooting landscapes for me, having such a short amount of time sometimes to photograph fleeting moments of such stunning scenes.
If there's one tip that I can offer you is to use a polariser when shooting rainbows as this captures the colours beautifully.
You can read more helpful tips on how to photograph in challenging weather in an article that I featured in recently in Amateur Photographer magazine. Click below to read the article. Enjoy.

Sun Rays Through the Eye of the Needle Rock, Old Man of Storr, Skye
A couple of weeks ago while running the first of my back to back workshops in Skye, I took my six clients to the Old Man of Storr. We set off from the guesthouse near Portree at 4.30am to head to the new car park at the base of the Old Man of Storr and prepared ourselves to hike up to shoot the Old Man before sunrise.
We ended up settling on this composition instead of hiking right up to the top ledge and it was a great decision as the rising sun provided us all with a great opportunity to capture it through the eye of Needle Rock.
For those interested, this is a single exposed image (no multi bracketing going on here). The ability of the Canon R5's sensor capabilities, especially when pulling out detail from the shadow areas is extraordinary.
Have a great weekend everyone

Slovenia Photo Tour Oct 2021 NOW BOOKING melvinnicholsonphotography.co.uk/photography-workshops/sl...
Lake Bled, the gift that keeps on giving. On the morning of the 2nd November, I woke at 5am and I opted to take the short drive down to Lake Bled at 6am to witness another sunrise, and wow, I was not to be disappointed.
I had waited four weeks since arriving in Slovenia to capture some great colour at this location and finally, nature treated me to a spectacular sunrise show. This is definitely a view that I shall miss terribly when I eventually return home to the UK but I have many, many photos to remind me of my hugely enjoyable times sitting on the bench with both cameras set up waiting for the magic to happen.
Memories and happy ones at that too are why I love my life as a professional landscape photographer. The sights I get to see and experience are priceless and I never take them for granted.
I hope my images help to put a smile on your face during these difficult times and I just wanted to reach out and thank each and every one of you for all your kind comments left and the personal messages that I receive privately expressing your joy and happiness in seeing my images, short videos and timelapses. It genuinely means an awful lot to me. Thank you.

Sunrise Over Traigh Bheag Beach, Isle of Harris
On Monday morning, I took my workshop clients along to one of my favourite beaches in the world, Traigh Bheag on the stunning Isle of Harris.
For once however, I opted not to shoot the beach because it was the background that caught my attention the most. I am a sucker for beautiful layering and as the sun rose to my right, the shadow and layering of the spits of land that jutted out into the water were simply too good not to capture them on camera, so I quickly got to work.
Every time I spend time on Harris and Lewis, the island constantly surprises me with another new scene, another opportunity to photograph and document an ever changing landscape. The colours and light were superb. I hope that you like it.

One of the most iconic locations in Tuscany is this gorgeous agriturismo that nestles in the hills of the Crete Senesi. I had an absolute glorious week that was full of colour, sunshine and magical misty mornings. I landed lucky with this shot for the farmhouse driveway is gated. The lady stood next to me instructed her husband to drive up and down the driveway a handful of times so that she could photograph the light trails. They were staying there that evening. I like the effect it has produced and it empathises perfectly the curvature of the driveway.

Sunrise Over Goscar Rock and Tenby, Pembrokeshire
Yesterday's sunrise over Tenby was absolutely stunning. Finally after twelve days on the road, I experienced a bit of colour and what a bit of colour it was too.
The tide was outgoing with left some part of the beach devoid of footprints bar the odd jogger and dog walker. The colours were stunning and built within a few minutes. Tenby is quite an elevated town and this allows for a wonderful position to photograph the harbour and Goscar Rock on the beach.
I used a Kase 10 Stop ND filter to slow the shutter speed down enough to smooth out the water, which on this occasion worked a treat. The clouds were moving very slowly so they appeared not to be been affected from the thirty second exposure time.
I shall return to Tenby in the future and see what other delights await but for now, I am delighted with how this turned out. I hope that you enjoy it too.

I have been after this particular photograph since time began. I have waited years to capture the glorious glow of the gorgeous 13th century fortified castle set against the backdrop of snow with a blue hue sky and with enough water to surround the castle properly and provide perfect mirror reflections.
Today was to finally be my day.
I ventured onto Skye after leaving this beautiful scene only to find snow and ice everywhere. But I am so looking forward to heading out tomorrow morning with my camera for there are stunning views everywhere.

Sunrise Over Whitby Pier, Yorkshire Coast
I decided to sleep in my car last Friday evening so that I could be near Whitby for sunrise yesterday morning. I woke at 3.45am, parked the car close to the pier, and spent a glorious couple of hours walking around the pier watching a magical sunrise taking place.
Considering that it is nearly the longest day of the year (June 21st), I was surprised at the long period of time I had to photograph the sun in its various positions. This particular image had me predict where the position of the sun was likely to be thirty seconds ahead of me wanting to actually take the photo for the sun rises diagonally to the right. Thankfully I positioned the tripod perfectly because the sun rose centrally under the tower.
The colours were rich as a couple of people walked along and watched this side of the world waking up at 4.30am. These are the kind of mornings that I cherish.
Last Friday was Day 29 of my 34 day road trip and the weather is getting warmer and warmer while the blue skies have arrived. Quite the contrast to the challenging weather that I experienced last week in Norfolk.
My remaining days shall be spent travelling up the east coast taking in the locations of Steetley Pier in Hartlepool, Chemical Beach at Seaham, Roker Pier in Sunderland, and St Mary's Lighthouse in Whitley Bay.

Misty Morning Over Bow Lake, Alberta, Canadian Rockies
I took this image down at the water's edge of Bow Lake in the Rockies when I came across this wonderful wooden bridge and thought that it would make a great subject to shoot in the foreground with the 2,985 metre Crowfoot Mountain in the background.
The colour of the water is exceptional and it was lovely and quiet on arriving at the lake around 6.20am.

I have a very limited number of places left on my Lofoten 12th-18th November 2020 workshop. For those interested, this image here was taken in November 2019.
melvinnicholsonphotography.co.uk/product/lofoten-norway-photography-workshop-november-2020
This gorgeous and dramatic view is one of the most iconic in Lofoten and it offers the photographer a stunning composition including the wooden bridge, the warmly lit wooden Norwegian homes at dusk and of course the legendary and amazingly shaped Witch's Hat (that's what I call it anyway).
The snow added a real wintery element to the view but because it was November and not February (when I normally run my Lofoten winter workshop), temperatures were very amenable. I cannot wait to return in November for yet another week of fantastic photography. Fancy joining me? Simply click on the link above for full details and/or to book.

Traigh Bheag (The Small Beach), Isle of Harris, Scotland
This beach that you can see here was photographed while leading my autumn workshop in November 2019, and it is typical of the stunningly beautiful sandy beaches that you see on Harris. The colour of the water is aqua, the sandy lovely and golden, and the skies either bright blue or full of the most atmospheric clouds you'll see anywhere.
Scotland is sure one hell of a place to visit with a camera and I never tire of doing so whatever the weather/time of the year and I cannot wait to return in November (2021) to run three workshops.

There are not many occasions where you'll find your heart pumping faster than when standing on an open beach in a fierce lightning storm but at midnight last night, I sprinted from my car to set up the tripod between heavy squalls at Perch Rock Lighthouse.
I used a weather radar app (AccuWeather on Android) to inform me when the rain was about to clear and for how long which last night, proved itself invaluable. I set up the tripod and adjusted the settings on my Sony a7R3 and repeatedly pressed the shutter release cable button every 15" until I eventually managed to capture a lightning strike right next to Perch Rock Lighthouse.
The inclusion of the crane platform to the left pleases me immensely for it adds an extra layer of interest as well as helping to balance out the composition. Having returned home at 6.30am, I think a couple of hours sleep is in order. Have a great day everyone.

Come and join me on my Harris and Lewis Photography Workshop 2nd-8th March 2019 £1,395

I found this wonderful abandoned crofe house on the island of Scalpay on Harris a couple of weeks ago and I could not resist pulling up and having my clients firing off a few shots before moving onto other locations.
The place was in a hell of a state but from high up on the moorland, it looked rather majestic in some outstanding scenery. I love photographing abandoned buildings and to wonder what kind of people once lived there interests me.
The sky was incredibly moody which lent a fantastic atmosphere to the scene. I hope you all like it. Feel free to share it if you wish :D

Agriturismo Poggio Istiano, Tuscany, Italy
Tuscany seemingly has an endless number of gorgeous agriturismos farmhouses) nestled on top of small hillocks and they are so photogenic.
This particular one I noticed for the first time and it resides across the road from the iconic Poggio Covili, a gorgeous Cyprus tree-lined avenue. I loved how the early morning light from the left-hand side of the frame illuminates the farmhouse and the trees wonderfully well but the inclusion of the well-worn path adds an interesting lead-in from the bottom left-hand corner of the frame.
I love these kinds of scenes and if this view is what you would love to photograph and experience too, come and join me on my workshop to Tuscany in Sept 2022. Click on the link below for full details.

Every time I edit an image from my travels to Iceland, my hear skips a beat and this image is no different.
I can just sit and stare at this view for hours on end and remember the sound of the rushing water in front of me and the slight breeze that swirled from the base of the waterfalls outwards. The air smelt so fresh, crisp and clean. It is quite simply one of the finest sights you can see in Iceland.

Rainbow at Traigh Bheag Beach, Isle of Harris, Scotland
Me and my four lovely workshop clients were treated to an exceptional morning down at Traigh Bheag Beach on Harris on Monday morning.
A rainbow appeared as we were packing up and it looked absolutely beautiful. This is my favourite beach on the island for it always seems to deliver magical moments to capture on camera.

Here is an amazing kp5 aurora storm that showed itself over the magical Jökulsárlón Ice Lagoon late at night back in January 2019.
It was AMAZING and one of the finest aurora display I have ever seen. Greens, purples, sparkling stars, and the most fantastic shapes that danced for me in the sky above while lighting up the icy, glacial water of the lagoon below.
This is a memory that will stay with me forever. I feel very privileged to have witnessed it.

Lone Tree, Great Ocean Road, Victoria, Australia
While out in Australia in May 2019, I ventured along one of the greatest coastal drives in the world, the Great Ocean Road. During my drive, I passed this gorgeous lone tree in the middle of a field and the light that fell on it was just sublime, especially with a stormy sky above.

If there is one thing that I as a landscape photographer seek endlessly, it is light. Perhaps it is quite apt really for I really do experience the highs and lows in search of a view that will stop me in my tracks and furthermore, have me document it for the enjoyment for others. When I struggle for motivation (as in life too) during those times when nothing is flowing, when all around me appears dark and foreboding, the sight of light can lift me and elevate me into an almost spiritual place sometimes.
Standing there witnessing such beauty in the natural world alleviates the stresses and strains of life. I can literally feel the weight of the world lifting from my shoulders leaving me heady sometimes. That is why perhaps I feel a NEED and not a WANT to not only photograph the landscape around me, but also completely immerse myself in it too. Once you have truly experienced this sensation, it fast becomes a way of life and one that you are so, so, so grateful for having found.
I hope you all like it. Have a great day.

One of the most difficult aspects of landscape photography I face is just how to shoot an overshot scene. You know those locations that are photographed a million times a year? Well how do you stamp your own style on a location. Well for me, this image involved bolting on my Canon 17-40mm lens positioning the tripod four inches above the water and as close to this little rock face as I could and simply wait for the right moment to click the shutter button.
I had to be mindful of not getting the camera wet as the odd rogue wave would come crashing up the rock face and in that instance you have to be ready to lift the tripod rather quickly but I really wanted to capture the wonderful motion of the ocean and have those lines in the water pass right underneath the camera. The colours and textures of the rock as the morning sun rises over the horizon with its beautiful soft glow also lured me in.

Taken last Friday evening at one of Ireland's most spectacular locations, the Cliffs of Moher. I was very fortunate to have a local photographer by the name of Sean Kitson accompany me to this location as it is not the usual place people shoot this scene from. The sunset was lovely with the colours radiating in the sky but this shot was taken just before the sun dropped below the horizon.
I love how the last warm rays of the sun light up the cliff faces beautifully while the flowers in the foreground stand over the surrounding views. Isn't it just lovely? This will be just one of the places we will be visiting on my Wild Atlantic Way Workshop next March (the North-North West workshop will take place this September).
I hope you all like it. Have a great evening whatever you happen to have planned and feel FREE to share it if you wish :D

Taken at the end of the day back in early March this year while running a five day photography tour. Having edited this image, it has since become one of my favourites that I have taken this year.

This morning I returned from leading a week long photography tour in Iceland and I don't mind admitting that the severe snow storms that we encountered were the most difficult conditions that I have ever experienced however the weather did create some outstanding scenery to photograph.
This view of the Black Beach at Vik was taken in 90mph winds during intermittent snow blizzards. I have no idea how I managed to take a sharp shot let alone one at two and a half seconds. That Gitzo GT3543XLS tripod sure takes some beating when the wind picks up.
I used a Nisi 6 Stop ND filter to slow the shutter just about long enough to capture the slow motion of the wonderful waves that raced in before being forced back out by the wind. There was a heavy set dark slate grey coloured sky threatening to dump a load more snow on us which it duly did a few minutes after returning to the minibus.
This is one of my favourite images I captured during the workshop and I hope you like it too.

The view of St Thomas Church from high up on a hillside over a mile away is one of the most impressive views in Slovenia that I have had the pleasure to see during my time here.
Sunrise is the best time to see the church illuminated by the rising sun while mist swirls in the valleys below. The numerous layers of mountains in the distance frames the scene beautifully but honestly, arrive an hour before sunrise (7.15am at this time of the year) and just watch this little part of the world wake and that is all the goodness your soul will need for the rest of the day.

This was the view that greeted me back in January on visiting the amazing area of Northton on the Isle of Harris in the Outer Hebrides in Scotland. This wonderful salt marsh is so incredibly photogenic, in part due to the the 368 metre hill in the background, known as Ceapabhal. Mind you, the whole island is a landscape photographers paradise.

Sunset at Mangersta Sea Stacks, Isle of Lewis, Outer Hebrides, Scotland
Today's photo is a previously unseen image dating back to March 2018. While running a week-long workshop in Harris & Lewis, I took my lovely clients to the truly beautiful Mangersta sea stacks on the west coast of the Isle of Lewis for sunset and we were not to be disappointed.
These stacks make a wonderful subject to photograph at sunset but my advice would be to arrive a good hour or so before the sun sets as it disappears behind the cliffs. The usual angle to shoot these stacks is actually from on top of the cliff edge you see in the distance but when there's the promise of a decent sunset, you have to be adaptable.
At one time, a handful of years or so ago, you use to be able to walk down to the water's edge and capture the impressive stacks but sadly, that is not an option since a landslide occurred but the view from up high is rewarding enough.

What a stunning sunrise my clients and I experienced yesterday at Reine in Lofoten. We were the only ones present and set up on location awaiting a gorgeous sunrise and at 8.56am, the sun popped over the horizon for ten minutes before ascending into the dark skies above.
This brief spell of golden light allows for the snow covered peaks of Reine to absorb some amazing colours as you can see here. Better still when you have the pace to yourself too.
If you would like to experience these gorgeous views for yourself, I have a limited number of places left on my Lofoten winter workshop in Feb 2020. Click on the link for more details :D

This wonderful quiet location is located near Ólafsvík. It is situated near the western end of the Snæfellsnes Peninsula. This image was captured on my first night of my week's trip to Iceland in Feb 2016. It became apparent that there was going to be some activity around 10pm so a decision was made to leave and I shot until 2am.
If you have never witnessed the northern lights (as I had not before heading to Iceland), then you'll find them a life changing experience and I do not say that lightly. I was so mesmorised by them that I found it difficult to shoot and watch them at the same time. I took a few minutes out just to stand there looking up mouth open and speechless. It is one of the impressive and beautiful sights I have ever witnessed. It is literally out of this world.

The light on Wednesday morning was wonderful. The sun was harsh in the sky but seemingly soft on the ground. This iconic farmhouse bathed in the early morning light is one of the finest sights to experience in the Val d'Orcia valley and is one of the reasons why I love returning to Tuscany.

This afternoon, I spent a good few minutes looking through the images I took back in Lofoten in February 2020 while running a week long workshop there.
I then come across this little beauty from a morning drive to Hamnoy and wondered quite why I did not edit it all those months ago although in truth, I have thousands of images still to look through but it is rather lovely to find a jewel like this.
Looking at this scenery, you can understand why I love Norway in the winter as much as I do. It's so calming, serene and peaceful. It's the perfect place to spend a winter in my honest opinion. I hope you all like it too.

This is Sunwapta Falls, a hugely popular and impressive waterfall. The roar of the water that flows underneath you is deafening but amazing to witness all the same.

Uttakleiv Beach turned out to be my favourite beach in Lofoten without a shadow of a doubt. Having primarily visited the beach to find and photograph the iconic and world famous 'monster's eye' rock pool (which I did), my thoughts turned to other compositions that lay in wait nearby. I did not have to wait long.
A few metres to the left of the monster's eye had these amazing rock formations catch my eye and my attention for an hour or so. I really did not want to leave when the time came but rest assured that when I return in November to run my workshop, Uttakleiv shall demand my upmost attention and quite happily so too.
In this image, the light fast fading fast as the end of the day arrived all too quickly. The skies darkened with what appeared to be an impending storm and the waves rushed towards me through the narrow channel between the stunning dark rocks. I felt energised, excited and enthused to just be standing there witnessing such beauty. It was at this very point that Lofoten captured my heart, mind and soul. What an experience.

At 9.30pm last night, despite feeling all cosy and sleepy while sitting at home in my super comfortable lounge reclining chair. I opted to drag myself off out with a good friend of mine and astrophotographer Stephen Cheatley. The destination was Grin Low Hill, a reasonable 90-minute drive from Preston where I live and the subject that I wanted to photograph was this wonderful 124-year-old Victorian folly called Solomon's Temple.
This folly is built on a raised neolithic burial mound and affords 360-degree views from the upper floor. The reason for my visit was to capture the Neowise Comet alongside it but on arrival at 11pm, the cloud had already started rolling in. I did not have long to find a decent composition, set up my Canon EOS R and my tripod and fire off some shots before the cloud completely enveloped the comet.
A handful of minutes later, the shutter release cable button clicked and the view on the LCD screen had me feel elated for the scene looked absolutely stunning. I used my headtorch to subtly light paint the folly.
For those interested, this is just one single exposure. I am delighted with the location and it was my aim to visit it a few weeks ago during the lightning storms but they failed to materialise but I shall return on the next big storm.
I hope you like the image and thanks to my good buddy Stephen for keeping me company (social distancing observed and we drove in separate cars for those interested).

Every now and then after editing an image I sit back and feel genuinely moved inside. It is not often that an image stops me in my tracks and has me feel quite emotional but for some strange reason, this one has done that to me tonight.
When it happens I'll be the first to admit that it catches me off guard and I am quite unprepared for it. This panoramic image has truly reminded me quite succinctly why I became a landscape photographer in the first place. The view when I was stood there was outstanding and one of the reasons why I fell utterly in love with the Assynt region of Scotland (upper north-west) but having stitched the seven images together and seen it in all its glory, I think it even surpasses what I felt when I was actually stood there.
I hope you enjoy looking at it as much as I did capturing it on camera.
