While leading a workshop in Iceland last week at the iconic location of Budir, where the black and white church resides, I noticed this stunning snow capped mountain peak in the distance. The summit was partly shrouded in low lying cloud and I just thought that it looked really beautiful so I could not resist capturing it on camera to show you all.
Iceland has so many scenes that probably go unnoticed by the majority but me and my four eyes tend to think in the minority most of the time, lol.

FOUR DAY LAKE DISTRICT AUTUMN WORKSHOP
Tues 31st October - Fri 3rd November 2017 £795
www.melvinnicholsonphotography.co.uk/product/lake-distric...
I am heading back to the beautiful Lake District National Park to run a three-day workshop Weds, Thurs and Fri this week and I cannot wait. I have three clients who will be joining me for three wonderful days of landscape photography. What a fantastic way to end the year.
So with that in mind, I thought that I would share with you an image that nobody has seen before, the fantastic Moss Force Falls in the Newlands Valley on the road between Keswick and Buttermere. Now, this has to be perhaps the most accessible waterfall in the Lake District. It is only 200 metres from the free roadside car park and it is split into three sections but together it measures 328 feet in height. Quite impressive indeed.
This photograph here was taken during a four-day workshop back in October when I was demonstrating various techniques which involved standing pretty close to the edge of the drop while maintaining my nerve and using a wide angle lens to capture the whole scene in one shot. I had my clients stand back a safe distance from the edge, while I set up their cameras and tripods before handing them their cable release to take the shot themselves. Client safety is always a priority for me as no shot is worth dying for.
Anyhow, I hope you all like it. Have a great day and feel free to SHARE as usual if you wish.

I was leading a one day workshop to Hodge Close Quarry on Sunday with a couple of clients when on arriving, the fog rolled in and created such wonderfully atmospheric conditions. I simply had to grab a quick shot of this beautiful Silver Birch tree which grows on the very edge of a 60ft drop. The way it clings to life impresses me for I admire its resilience, determination never to let go and to continue battling on through life no matter what is thrown at it. I am coming back as a tree in my next life :-)
I shall be running more one day workshops here throughout the winter. If you would like to be notified ahead of the general public, feel free to SIGN UP to my mailing list newsletters.

Last October, I visited Venice for the first time. I had two days available between scouting out Tuscany for a workshop running Sept this year and leading my annual workshop in the Dolomites.
It's certainly an interesting place and as expected, was pretty busy which frustrated me no end (hence why I've decided not to run a workshop in Venice now) but one of the ways that I sought to get around that problem was to head out with my camera at 4am.
I started with Piazza San Marco (St Mark's Square) and I really enjoyed walking around on my own (bar the odd drunken local too, lol). But en-route to shooting sunrise from the Ponte dell'Accademia Bridge, I went in search of some lovely quaint back alley and canals when I came across this one.
It was perfect. It had boats, wonderful buildings, a couple of illuminated street lights and a gorgeous metal bridge. How could I resist really? I much prefer exploring cities overnight, when the best bits are all lit up and it's so quiet. To this end, Venice delivered the goods but alas, no sooner did the sunrise, the streets filled. Still, the waterways and alleyways are near deserted at the moment, giving the city some much-needed downtime from the hordes of tourists (me included).
I do wonder what if any, changes will be implemented to help preserve the city in the near future. An interesting point for me to ponder on while I have the time to do so.

Since returning from New Zealand and Australia a month ago, I have not been out with the camera shooting just for myself. This is not entirely uncommon with landscape photographers during the summer months but in my case, I had/have a lot of admin to catch up on since returning from my month away travelling.
The demands of running a business, as well as putting the polishing touches to my 2020 workshops has left me with little time to head out but yesterday I felt the urge to do so. So I checked the tide height at this local iconic spot (this wooden jetty complete with the 'lamp stand water marker') and sure enough, the tide height was perfect for a sunset shot so off I went eager to scratch my photography itch.
I combined the trip with a drink in a local pub beforehand with Chris Beard, a good friend of mine and photographer too before heading across the road to capture the sunset. Now the sun dropped way over my right shoulder so there was no colour to be captured although it was a gorgeous sunset with lovely pinks in the sky reflecting in the incoming tide complete with several Herons all walking around by the shoreline in the water looking for food. It was just lovely being outdoors and among nature.
The tide slowly comes in at this location until it reaches around six foot from the end of the jetty then the bugger rushes in rather quickly. You do not have a lot of time to get the shot you want. Perhaps five minutes and that's it. You also have to be careful that the water does not rise from under the jetty and soak your camera bag through. I got away with wearing waterproof leather hiking boots but had I stayed around any longer, wellies would definitely have been needed.
Anyhow, this shot was taken using a Kase 6 Stop ND filter and it performed brilliantly as always.

I returned home from Iceland this morning and I am going through my images. I have to start this post by saying that to my mind, Iceland's Diamond Beach at Jökulsárlón is without a doubt one of the most fascinating and beautiful places on earth.
Jet black, volcanic sand and rocks live alongside the fierce icy waters of the North Atlantic. For those unaware of how this little part of the world works regarding icebergs being washed up onto the beach, let me fill in the blanks for you.
Ice falls from Vatnajökull Glacier and into the Jökulsárlón ice lagoon. They then slowly float out to the sea where they get tossed up onto the beach. It really is quite some sight to see icebergs the size of cars being deposited onto the beach. Walking around all the ice that lines the beach allows you to take your time and find some interesting compositions and angles.
On Thursday, I eventually decided on this composition in order to capture the stunning bright orange settling sun dropping behind this amazing sparkling, crystal clear iceberg. As the light from the sun filtered through the iceberg, it lit up the rocks directly in front of the iceberg. I opted for an incredibly low vantage point, mere inches above the ground in order to place the iceberg high up into the darkening sky in order to give it its own space to shine, quite literally in this instance.
These are the kind of images that have me become connected to the landscape I am so blessed to regularly experience at close quarters. I could just look at this view forever. I hope you all like it too.

I captured this stunning view last Wednesday morning on the first day of my three-day workshop I was running in the Lake District. The light was beautiful with some stunning clouds.
I knew the night before from the water levels indicated on a website that I use when researching the location that the water level would be perfect for this shot.
I love shooting this scene with the water halfway up the gate and you can only go when the water is at the right height, the light and colour in the sky was an added bonus.

An alternative view from the norm while my clients were photographing the ramshackled wooden sheds on the water's edge behind me. On turning around I noticed for a fleeting minute the gorgeous light on the Lilandstinden mountain but it was the inclusion of the diminutive white houses on the water's edge that made the shot for me.
They certainly help to give the whole scene some sense of scale which unless you are stood there for yourself, is almost impossible to appreciate and admire. A trip to Lofoten is definitely a must and I shall be returning in February to run another week long workshop. Interested in joining me? Contact me for more details.

Sunset Over the Dream Sculpture, Sutton Manor Colliery, St Helens, Merseyside
Last night I decided to pay a visit for the first time to a wonderful 66ft piece of art called Dream Sculpture. It is located on the old Sutton Manor Colliery and it was installed in 2009 at a cost of £1.9 million.
It is a quick fifteen-minute walk from the free car park on the nearby road and there are a couple of paths that lead you to this magnificent viewpoint. The sun was setting to my left which cast a gorgeous soft yellow light on the face while a long shutter speed ensured that the clouds flew by.
I was lucky enough to find a gap in the clouds not long after arriving so I quickly set up and fired off a handful of images. This one happens to be one of my favourites. I hope that you like it too.
Have a great weekend everyone, whatever you happen to be doing :D

My first visit to Lofoten in winter in February 2019 resulted in me spending a glorious five days among fresh deep snow and some of the finest scenery anywhere in Europe.
Reine is one of the hotspots for people to visit and photograph and 99.9% of them shoot the scene from the roadside which affords them an elevated position of the red fisherman's cabins below and of course the Olstind mountain in the background.
However in an attempt to capture something a little different, I ventured down to the waters edge where thigh high virgin snow and ice islands awaited. This was always going to be a landscape format due to the width of the scene but even I was surprised at just how beautiful it looked framed this way. Isn't it just stunning?

Strawberry Supermoon over Liverpool
Okay, okay, so at 9pm last night, I decided at the last minute to rush down over the River Mersey to New Brighton to capture the strawberry supermoon. I had some help from Lee Mansfield regarding the location (thanks ever so much Lee, you're a star) and within twenty minutes of arriving, there she was in all her glory.
The funny thing was that because I was looking for the supermoon to rise between the two towers of the Liver Building so intently, I never noticed it rising to the right of the cruise liner, ha, ha. Still, the image turned out well in the end.
Have a great day folks, I'm off for a back massage as I am not getting any younger ;-)

Five Night Assynt & Inverpolly Photography Workshop/Tour 18th-23rd November 2018 £650 / £795
melvinnicholsonphotography.co.uk/product/assynt-inverpoll...
A brand new edit of an image that I have sat on ever since I visited this gorgeous north-west part of Scotland last September.
Clachtoll lies on the B869, the twisting single track road that follows the coast from Lochinver north then east to Kylesku. It is well known for it's jagged striated rocks that lead out into the aqua coloured water. There's a beautiful little white sandy beach to enjoy but my interest lay in these wonderful rocks.
I had to navigate the gaps between the rocks from the mainland to stand on this wonderful little island of rocks. The tide was receding but still had more than enough power to completely surround me on occasion. Trying to find a composition that worked was the tricky bit and a good 30 minutes passed before I finally settled on this view.
For those interested, I am running a five night photography tour to Assynt and Inverpolly 18th-23rd November 2018. I only have one place from the original five advertised left. It is a shared twin room with a gentleman. The tour is discounted from £795 to £650 to take into account of the room share.

I recently visited Brisbane for the first time and I fell in love with the view of the city from the famous and iconic viewpoint, Kangaroo Point.
I arrived ahead of dusk and waited patiently for the sun to set before the twinkling of the city lights matched the darkness of the blue sky perfectly before capturing four landscape format photos. They have been stitched in Photoshop CC.
Just standing there watching the world go by was an absolute pleasure. From the boats that glided by below me on the aptly named Brisbane River to the trains and the cars in the background. There's something rather magical about a city that transcends into darkness don't you think?

I have been busy editing images from last week's Iceland workshop that I ran and I am blown away by the unbelievable beautifulness of the scenes that I photographed.
This image here which is made up of eight vertical images that have been stitched together in Photoshop CC and I have to admit that i am completely in love with this image. I think I will print, frame and hang it on my wall (I only have two of my images on my walls. Shocking I know, lol).
The Budir Church is a stunning yet simple black and white wooden church that sits two minutes form the Budir Hotel where we were staying (and where we will be staying for two nights once again on my future October workshop if anyone is interested in joining me. Click on the link below for full details).
I cannot recall seeing the church taken in a panorama format before on social media etc but it clearly shows the outstanding scenery that surrounds the church. It's one of my favourite places in Iceland and I am sure you can see why.

This is not the usual copse of trees that are photographed at four kilometers to the west of San Quirico d'Orcia, these are the trees in the distance at the top of the hill and they interested me more due to a near perfect blue sky present.
But within minutes of setting up the camera and tripod,I noticed the odd cloud or two suddenly developing and so with a healthy bout of patience, I waited for one of them to drop right into place The gorgeous colour tones of the harvested rolling fields below including the stunning soft, gentle curves of the land which provided some light and shade as further clouds drifted across the sun was just about as good as it gets.

This has to be one of the most surreal places on earth. The icebergs are formed in the ice lagoon across the road and they eventually drift down to the ocean and onto the beach. This year there is so much more ice than my previous visit February last year. There was almost too much ice to get a clean shot. This was the best I could manage given the hour I had to spend there before nightfall arrived.
The ice is just amazing, some sparkle due to its clarity and others less so but all have something to offer the landscape photographer. You have to be careful of the waves crashing on the shore as always but what a fantastic experience.
Have you visited this beach and if so, what was your experience?

I have shot so many images from having visited so many locations this last year that it doesn't take long to find an image from a previous photo album that I haven't processed yet and this image is one such photo.
Captured during my very first sunrise visit to the Forth Rail Bridge near Edinburgh back in September 2016 with Gavin Duncan. We ventured down to Port Edgar for this capture and it was so beautiful just watching the sun slowly rise and illuminate the sky with its fiery colour.
I was so lucky with the weather during my five days travelling up from East Lothian and this sunrise was mindblowing. I love the inclusion of the boats in the distance.
I wrote a blog on my travels to Scotland and you can read it here if you wish. www.melvinnicholsonphotography.co.uk/five-day-scotl…/

One of the reasons for wanting to visit the south island of New Zealand during April/May time was to capture the autumnal colours and oh my, these past ten days has provided some outstanding opportunities to do just that.
Take this gorgeous old wooden Police hut in the gold mining town of Arrowtown 20km from the bustling Queenstown. Captured yesterday on camera, the colours were outstanding and in general the gorgeous golds, yellows and red have really helped to lift the scenery of New Zealand to even greater heights.
Arrowtown itself is a stunning, quirky and charming town that was boosted by the gold rush era way back in 1862. Today the buildings that line the main high street are all period and look almost like it was specially created for a western movie. If you get the chance to visit, please do. You will not be disappointed.
On that note, I must dash to Lake Matheson with Alan, my client for a glorious sunrise is promised and I want us to capture the mountains reflected in the water of the lake. Have a great Sunday evening everyone.
p,s. Here's a great link explaining a little more about Arrowtown.

If anyone would love to experience Lofoten for with me, I shall be returning in November 2020 - £1,495
melvinnicholsonphotography.co.uk/…/lofoten-norway-p…
After taking my somewhat popular Fogbow photo back in Nov 2016 in Glencoe, Scotland and my Sundog photo (a form of sunbow around the sun) Feb 2019 in Reine, Lofoten, the only image I was after to complete my 'Bow Trilogy' was a lunar halo and yesterday morning I managed to complete my wish.
Thanks to both my clients Cerise and Neale for making me aware that there was a lunar halo taking place while I was loading up our minibus with everyone's luggage en-route back to the airport after a really enjoyable week away on my Lofoten winter workshop,
I turned around to see this incredible, huge lunar halo that filled the sky and the light of the moon reflecting beautifully on the water of the ocean in the distance. It was amazing to witness. The temperature was around -1°c.
I quickly whipped out my Canon EOS R complete with their 24-70mm f4 lens and fired off just two shots (it's all I had time for). I used Benro's superb little Travel Angel tripod which thankfully provided a stable platform even when stood in deep snow.
Anyhow, I hope you all like the image. Personally I am 'over the moon' (groan bad pun time) to have finally captured a lunar halo. It looks as though Lofoten is my lucky charm.

Thunderstorm Over Shingle Street, Suffolk
Today is day 24 of my road trip down south but day 21 on Wednesday, saw me arrive at Shingle Street in Suffolk. As I pulled into the car park, heavy clouds rolled over me and before long, the almighty roar of thunder filled the air while the odd lightning bolt illuminated the sky.
Standing on an open beach of shingle, the clattering sound of the stones underneath my feet, could not compete with the drama that was taking place overhead. Fast paced clouds grew ever darker and the whole place took on a really menacing feel, especially as I was more than aware that I was exposed to the weather above, especially the lightning strikes.
However, the scene drew me in and before long I was firing off so many images in the hope of capturing a strike or two and while I did not manage to photograph any over the coastguard cottages, I did out to sea but that image I shall share some other time.

Sunset at the Cromarty Firth, Scotland
Here's an image that I took recently during an amazing sunset nr Inverness. There was a beautiful amount of mist to mask the fells in the background, therefore really allowing the oil rigs to stand prominently in the foreground.
I was shooting the rigs with very little hope in seeing any colour whatsoever at sunset but with a few minutes to go, it completely kicked off and continue to build and build and build. It was absolutely magical and a great day to end a lovely day.

Come and join me on my Harris and Lewis Photography Workshop 2nd-8th March 2019 £1,395
melvinnicholsonphotography.co.uk/product/harris-lewis-sco...
Well today was my last full day of photography on this quite remarkable island of Lewis and Harris and this location was to be the final one of the day/week/amazing photography holiday.
I have had a fantastic time with three very good friends all week, lots of laughter, fun and humorous stories have been had which is always good for the head, heart and soul. Thanks Mick, Tony and Brian for the memories.
.
Personally I always love finishing an epic trip to somewhere new with a fantastic location as it kind of has me send of the place in style and this wonderful little beach awaited us this afternoon. We arrived to find it completely free of footprints which is remarkable and it allowed us to compose our shots carefully.
The rolling waves were perfectly timed and just the right height and intensity to deliver us some cracking photos such as this one.
My verdict on the Isle of Lewis and Harris?
This is my first time of visiting and it has been an education and a real pleasure in discovering the many different sides and locations of this fine island. I have found it to be remote, desolate in parts, much larger than I first thought with some quite outstanding beaches, sea stacks and rocky outcrops. It really does feel different to the mainland, very earthy, no-nonsense way of living but seemingly free of complications and modern life and actually that isn't a bad thing.
I have decided to run a workshop here later in the year, either a four or a five day one with a maximum of five places. If you're interested in joining me, let me know and you'll be the first to hear of my future plans for this quite wonderful island.
I hope you have all enjoyed my photos and exploits from Lewis and Harris this week and I have shot a video of me today which I will edit once home (it will be live on YouTube early next week).
Thanks for all your comments, likes and general interaction this week, it has been great having you along for the ride. I'm off to Dorset on Wednesday for five days to run a two day 1-2-1 with a new client followed by a one day workshop on the Sunday which I am delighted to announce that the one and only Take-a-View Landscape Photographer of the Year 2016-17 Matthew Cattell will be joining me as a special guest for the day.
So for those of you who have booked on to the workshop, there's a little treat for you and if there's a couple of you out there interested in joining us at Durdle Door, Bat's Head, Man 'o' War Bay and Kimmeridge Bay for the day, click here to book.

WOW. I have been absolutely blessed with some amazing misty mornings on my travels since landing in Italy on the 12th Sept 2020 followed by a spell now in Slovenia while I discover its stunning scenery, of which there is plenty.
A Slovenian friend of mine Ana took me to this church called St Ana (ironic I know) the other evening with her boyfriend Matic. The church is lit at night and looks stunning but it was the view behind me that I was also interested in as I knew that the sun rose in the distance and over the trees.
So on arriving for my sunrise session on the 14th Oct 2020, the mist inversion was simply incredible and it flooded the valleys below all around me.
I quickly set up the Canon EOS R5 to capture this image. I bolted don the RF 24-70mm f/2.8 which I have to confess is an absolute peach of a lens as you would expect.
At this time of the year, total mist inversions are common in the Ljubljana region and they are an absolute joy to witness and capture on camera.

Hi everyone and I have landed back home after spending a glorious and hectic nine days down in Dorset scouting out locations for an upcoming workshop down there next March/April time. Full details to be announced shortly but before then, I am going through the many hundreds of images that I took while away in East Lothian and Fife coastline of Scotland mid-September.
Here's one image that I would love to share with you and gauge your thoughts on it. It's a wonderful location called Pettico Wick, which nestles down in a small hidden bay just before arriving at St Abbs Lighthouse. There's a lovely little free car park that allows you to park up close to the short but steep walk down to the shoreline.
I had wanted to photograph this location for a couple of years now and to be able to do so during what was a stunning sunset (all alone too as there was no-one else there to share the moment with), was a real privilege. I hope you all enjoy looking at it as much as I did capturing it on camera.
Car park coordinates for the car park are 55.915187, -2.147994
The shoreline location to shoot the scene below are 55.915012, -2.149059

Shipwreck Under the Stars, River Wyre, Fleetwood, Lancashire
I have seriously missed heading out at night with my camera so a couple of days ago, I ventured out to one of my favourite local locations to photograph the shipwrecks on the River Wyre estuary down by the March Nature Park in Fleetwood.
I first visited this lovely spot way back in 2010 and I have seen the various boats alter as they degrade, with one of the lovely wooden boats having collapsed a few years ago now.
The purpose of my visit was to give the Canon R5 a decent run out at night and also test out my latest acquisition, a pocket-sized, 1" sensor, Canon Powershot G5X MKII. It is fair to say that the G5X MKII struggled a little in the noise department and not all of it could be removed in Topaz DeNoise but for its size, it performed very well indeed. I was impressed.
You will notice from the EXIF data below that I shot the scene at ISO2500. What, I hear you cry. Why? How? Well, I wanted to test out the noise performance of the R5 too so I bolted on a Kase 6 Stop ND Filter to allow me to shoot at 30" at ISO2500. Without the filter, I could have shot this scene at ISO100 for 30" but that would not have tested the noise performance anywhere near enough. I can confirm that I am very impressed with the noise levels at ISO2500. This Canon R5 really is a superb piece of kit.

Without a shadow of a doubt, this is the most iconic view of New Zealand.
The evening before I was due to shoot sunrise, the five minute weather forecast at the end of the news on TV the suggested without hesitation that rain was predicted at sunrise. I could not believe it. I dearly wanted a great sunrise shot of Milford Sound as I know the potential that exists for capturing a stunning scene here. Nonetheless, I dragged myself out of bed and wandered down to the water’s edge pre-dawn in the hope of a little magic.
In the space of thirty minutes, the clouds lifted, then disappeared swiftly followed by a glorious sunshine and when the rising sun slowly illuminated the peaks ahead of me. I was wide eyed and my jaw opened. The views were magnificent and were everything that I was hoping for and more. When the low lying mist started passing in front of Mitre Peak, I was in landscape photography heaven I do not mind admitting.
This view alone was worth the three flights and thirty hours in the air.

Quite possibly one of the finest and most inspiring places that I have ever had the privilege to photograph since I picked up a camera nearly ten years ago.
Jökulsárlón is a truly remarkable place. On one side of the road, there lies a stunning, calm and reflective glacial lagoon which has seals lying on top of floating icebergs. Then on the other side, you have the volcanic black, sandy beach which has the said icebergs drift from the lagoon, under the bridge, into the North Atlantic ocean only then to be thrown onto the beach. It's a sight worth seeing for sure.

TWO DAY NORTHUMBERLAND WORKSHOP
2nd - 3rd December 2017 £295

Absolutely stunning light this morning {Sat 4th Nov 2016} over Bamburgh Castle on day one of my two day workshop here in Northumberland. We had everything from 50mph winds, rain, stormy skies and even hail at one point but if you hold on long enough, this is what you can capture. Worth all the pain I'd say.
