A Black-headed gull (Chroicocephalus ridibundus) landed on the railing of the Millennium Bridge as I moved away.

A long exposure of the Millennium Bridge and St Paul's on a clear evening. These sort of shots make me feel calm and happy. Do you agree?
A Thames Clipper river bus passes underneath the Millennium Bridge and past the Tate Modern art gallery.
The Millennium footbridge links the area around St Paul's Cathedral to the south bank of the River Thames, in London.
Great friend Mark and I decided on a London night/sunrise shoot last Friday evening just for a change and we had a great time capturing the well know landmarks by the Thames.
This one being the millennium bridge leading to St Paul's cathedral.
I used a cool White balance to eliminate the normal colour cast seen in cityscapes and I must admit to liking the result
There are actually 3 bridges in this shot; the modern Millennium footbridge; Blackfriar's railway bridge and behind that Blackfriar's road bridge, each with their different architecture as appropriate to their use.
As the sun sets on a Friday evening in London, business men walk left towards the station and visitors walk into the city for the night life.

Some days I have to pinch myself as a photographer living in a city like London. It's ever changing skyline is a delight to explore but there are some iconic locations that whenever I see them, and trust me I've looked at this composition of the Millennium Bridge and St Pauls Cathedral literally hundreds of times over the years, that just keep pulling at my eye. I've taken a variation of this shot literally tens of times, probably more, but every day is different. Different skies, different light, different cameras, different lenses, different focal lengths - it's always worth shooting again.
This was taken back in October and I was shooting this old Leica lens on a mirrorless Olympus camera for the first time. It may sound like an expensive setup however it is anything but. The Olympus is a ten year old 16 megapixel camera, not very impressive by today's standards, and the 90mm lens, while it may have Leica written on it is at least 50 years old and can be had on eBay for around a hundred pounds (I paid £85 for my copy). I can't describe the pleasure I get from handling these old manual focus lenses, it's so different than using a modern auto-focus lens. They aren't particularly sharp in comparison but then I ask myself, how sharp does sharp have to be? I know many will disagree but for me this picture is sharp enough and the joy I get from using that old lens far outweighs any disappointment I may have of producing a picture that is not razor sharp. My joy of photography is as much to do with the taking of the pictures, the getting out there and walking with my camera, as it is to do with the pictures I produce, strange as that may sound. Perhaps that's why film photography has become such a staple in my life.

A footbridge linking Bankside with the City of London. The walkway is made of an open metal see-through mesh. The white colour was caused by the sun catching the mesh. St Pauls is at the end of the bridge
This weekend London is marking 350 years since The Great Fire. St. Paul's opened its doors last night for one of their rare 'after hours' visits where photography was allowed (no tripods though, so it was really difficult as the cathedral is dimly lit). Not only that but the fire is projected onto the dome from dusk till 11p.m. until Sunday- an incredible sight. The views from Tate Modern and the Millennium Bridge are probably the best and there is also a Garden of fire exhibit there.
Tuesday 14th November was the date of the so called Super Moon. Unfortunately heavy cloud made sure it didn't put in an appearance at Newcastle Quayside.

St Paul's Cathedral (1675) from the South Bank, by the Tate Modern. Shot during the blue hour, just after sunset, it was good to see the dome of St Paul's lit up. The Millennium Bridge (2000) is the crossing here, it was designed in part by Norman Foster, who has had an enormous impact on London's skyline over the years.

This was taken on the weekend that London remembered the great fire which was 350 years ago. To mark it St Paul's was illuminated with a fire projection.

Famous view from the Millennium Bridge. Taken at sunset
I eventually got around to processing this 11 shot panorama taken a while back down at the Newcastle quayside. I just wish I had noticed the post in the right hand foreground at the time !!
oops.. maybe next time... :-)
Taken on a recent Talkphotography meet to Northumberland. We ventured south to Newcastle on the Friday night to shoot the quayside, which was a first for me.....
