Reflections on the River Tyne - Quayside in Newcastle.

The Millennium Bridge, The Baltic and The Sage

A long exposure night shot on Millennium Bridge with light tracks from a couple walking their bicycles across the bridge.

I haven't been out much with my camera recently so have been having fund processing some old ones. I end of with loads of different versions. Hope you like this one!

Was walking over Vauxhall Bridge yesterday just before sunrise and I could see it was going to be good, took out my camera but no card. As I continued my walk to work I saw the gorgeous pink glow in the sky!!

I have tried to get as close as I can to the underside of the footbridge at Castleford in an attempt to get a different view. The river was quite full though so I didn't want to get too close to the edge!

Another view of the sunken barge and the Millennium Bridge next to the weir in Castleford.

Also visible in this photo is the flour mill - Queen's flour mill.

I must have looked ridiculous, lying flat on my belly to get the shot. Thankfully, there weren't many people about to have a laugh.

I cropped some repetitive sky and bridge off to emphasize the lines.

Sunday morning, sunrise, no crowds

The Millennium Bridge was the first new bridge to be built over the Thames in London for more than 100 years. It was the result of a 1996 competition and it was won by the 'blade of light' design envisioned by Arup (engineers), Foster and Partners (architects) and Sir Anthony Caro (sculptor).

It was officially opened by the Queen on 10 June 2000. Around 80,000 people crossed the bridge on its opening day, with around 2,000 on the bridge at any one time. People felt the bridge begin to sway and twist in regular oscillations. Feeling unsteady, the pedestrians altered their gait to the same lateral rhythm as the bridge. The adjusted footsteps just magnified the motion: the more it happened, the more people responded to the movement; and the worse it got. Two days later the bridge was closed until the problem was fixed but it’s known as the Wobbly Bridge since.

It reopened for good on 27 February 2002 and the best time to catch it without people crossing it is at sunrise, albeit the occasional photographer will be desperately trying to find a new angle.

Late evening, towards St. Paul's Cathedral

The dome of St Paul's Cathedral viewed from the Millennium Footbridge on an autumnal afternoon of clouds, sunshine and showers.

Early morning, no people about except this couple that just stood in front of me and gazed at the incredible sight.

From The Eastern side of the Millennium Bridge and still looking at the dome of St Paul's.

Back in the old days, the only way of crossing the Thames was to pay the Ferryman, maybe best once they got you to safety on the other side, today we can use the footbridge

And this is the view of St. Paul“s from the Millennium Bridge.

Have a great weekend! :-)

So hard to get a sharp image on this bridge as it wobbles so much with the hundreds of pedestrians walking over it.
