Darley Abbey Mills or Boar's Head Mills, was built for and run by the Evans family of Darley Abbey. The Boar's Head featured in the families coat of alms, and was also used by them as a brand, logo and trademark. The Mills are now part of the Derwent Valley Mills Heritage Trail, and carry World Heritage Status. The river in the foreground, is the (Derbyshire) Derwent, and the stretch just below the weir, formed the limit of navigation for boats arriving via the former Derby Canal. Thus connecting the mills to the national canal network, and a number of the UK's ports.

Abandoned textile mill (1851-2004)

HSS! For this image of the Maynard mills, I used the Lightroom Antique preset with some tweaks to the exposure to try to get the details to show better.

The first mill in Maynard, Massachusetts, was the Assabet Woolen Mill in 1847. In 1898 it was acquired by American Woolen Company, which continued to operated through World War I. In 1957 Digital Equipment Corporation was founded in rented office space in the mill complex. DEC purchased the entire complex in 1974, having become a leading manufacturer of minicomputers. By 1993, DEC failed and the buildings are now used as office space for multiple companies. The Assabet River flows in the foreground.

The Grade II-listed Hardwater Mill is just to the west of Wellingborough in Northamptonshire, on the River Nene near Great Doddington. The buildings date from the mid-1700s to the early 1800s, though there has been a watermill on this site since the time of the Domesday Book. Milling ceased in 1946 and it is now a private residence.

The first record of a mill at Worsbrough was in the Domesday book of 1086, although the exact location of the mill along the River Dove is unknown. The oldest part of the mill standing today dates from about 1625 and forms the two storey stone building known as the Old Mill, which houses the waterwheel. Before the Mill House was built in the mid 18th century the miller and his family would have lived in the mill itself. There are large fireplaces on both the ground and first floors and the lintel over the fireplace on the first floor is inscribed with several dates and initials of the millers.

The Old Mill was probably modernised in the early 1820’s to improve its output, and in the 1840’s the New Mill was built next door. The machinery in the New Mill was powered by a steam engine and a third floor, where grain could be stored in bulk, was added.

Trade for corn and flour began to drop off towards the end of the 19th century as cheap imported wheat came in from abroad.

Another shot of Stembridge Mill from a few weeks back.

Stembridge Tower Mill in High Ham, Somerset, England is the last remaining thatched windmill in England. It is the last survivor of five windmills that once existed in the area.

Constructed in 1822, including parts from the earlier Ham Mill which stood nearby and last used commercially in 1910. In 1969 Professor H. H. Bellot left the windmill, cottage and garden to the National Trust in his will. The mill has four floors, a thatched cap and is constructed of local limestone known in the area as Blue Lias

An old abandoned mill in Ozark, Missouri. It's nearby, but I had never seen it before.

It began operating in 1839, and the first post office of Ozark, MO, was located inside the mill, which was named Hoover Mill at that time. John Morris, the founder of Bass Pro, has talked about having a restaurant in the old building, which he now owns. What a view that restaurant would have!

Photographed the Arrestra (Primitive Mill) at the Porcupine Historical Park located in the Town of Porcupine in the Township of Whitney in the City of Timmins in Northeastern Ontario Canada

This Arrestra was found near the old Buffalo-Ankerite Mine site and moved to the park in the 1950's.

An arrastra (or arastra) is a primitive mill for grinding and pulverizing (typically) gold or silver ore. Its simplest form is two or more flat-bottomed drag stones placed in a circular pit paved with flat stones, and connected to a center post by a long arm. With a horse, mule or human providing power at the other end of the arm, the stones were dragged slowly around in a circle, crushing the ore. Some arrastras were powered by a water wheel; a few were powered by steam or gasoline engines, and even electricity

This was taken the same day as the facing the fears one was done and we had come through the Washington National Forest out into the Cowpasture Valley in the beautiful (and favorite of ours) Highland County. The sun was so strong that day that it was making beautiful strong shadows and areas of light and dark. I don't know the name of this mill or anything else about it unfortunately.

Built in 1907, The Starr's Mill site also included a cotton gin and a dynamo that produced electricity for the nearby town of Senoia. The turbine mill ran up until 1959, and although not operating today, it is now restored and owned by the Fayette County Water System. The Fayette County Water System purchased the historic Starr's Mill in February 1991.
