We arrived at Crystal Mill. The beauty of this old structure was amazing. It is known as one of the most photographed historic sites in Colorado. I must admit, I took my fair share of photos too!

Crystal was incorporated in 1881. At its peak it had 400 residents, two newspapers, a pool hall, a men’s club, barber shop and two hotels. By 1915 only eight people lived in Crystal. Today there is a general store, public outhouse and several cabins available for short term rent. The few residents live in Crystal during the summer months only. We didn’t walk to the townsite of Crystal. It was starting to drizzle and we had a long hike and ride back.

Snapped at the local Mill pond in Emsworth. A classic Swan pose set against inky black pond water. This was a relatively bright day and with the spot metering on the camera, and the contrast between the swan and the water, the water came out very underexposed creating this black looking water.

The Swan has struck up this pose because there is a Black Swan visiting the area and there are some territorial games going on just out of sight.

A little surreal for mid-day but it does give a slightly more arty feel to the pic than it might otherwise have had.

I might also add that I had gone to the pond all setup to snap some in-flight action when I spontaneously took this. A shutter speed of 1/12800 and ISO 1000 was possibly overkill for this somewhat stationery subject! :-)

Thanks for looking.

The Old Mill at Ancaster, Ontario. Fun place to explore.

Hagood Mill is located on Hagood Branch, earlier known as Jennings Creek, a tributary of the Twelve Mile River in Pickens, South Carolina. Although mills had existed on the site as early as the 1790s, the current mill was built in 1845 by James Hagood and it remained in the Hagood family and continued to operate until 1966.

A most amazingly beautiful location in West Virginia: Glade Creek Grist Mill. Located in Babcock State Park.

Lanterman's Mill, the highlight of the Mill Creek Metroparks in Youngstown, Ohio, was built in 1845. After restoration in the 1980's, the mill is still in operation grinding corn, wheat, and buckwheat and is open to the public for tours.

After a steep hike through a small canyon I reached this beautiful spot near Gerstruben, an ancient village in the Bavarian alps. After scouting this location I decided to get rid of my shoes for this photo. The water was so cold that I had to hurry. But as you all know, if you find a spot like this you do not take only one two photos. Finally I went back home quite satisfied with some photos I took but with very numb feet.

The beautiful Glade Creek Grist Mill at Babcock State Park in West Virginia. I was really hoping for a wintry scene. It was snowing heavily as I drove along I 64, but as I approached the state park the skies cleared.

LR Enfuse on a 3 image stack. Used a -2.3 and +1.6 to get shadows with lots of detail. This area was the final stage of the milling process- known as the wash floor - machine shaken flotation tables here recovered the copper. Copper sand came in from the holes in the floor above. Waste sand was flushed away down a "launder" to the lake.

Houghton Mill, near St Ives in what used to be the county of Huntingdonshire, is the only working watermill left on the River Great Ouse. The present Grade II*-listed building probably dates from the 17th century and was substantially altered and extended in the 18th and 19th centuries.

In its mid-19th century heyday the mill ran 10 pairs of stones powered by three separate waterwheels. Much of the internal machinery remains intact although the wheels were removed in the 1930s when the mill stopped production. Today, corn is ground by a pair of millstones powered by the north waterwheel which was re-instated in 1999.

Houghton Mill is owned by the National Trust.
