A well photographed waterfall from our day trip to North Wales. I'm trying to improve my landscape technique at the moment after a day out with our friend and accomplished landscape photographer John Starkey. The weather forecast was completely wrong, so we didn't manage to do as much as we'd hoped, but the walk through the woods to this little waterfall was lovely.
We were enjoying the tranquillity of the location until someone on the adjacent estate started blasting away with a shotgun at regular intervals, oh well....

Still wandering through my hard drive clearing space. The Crystal Mill around Marble, CO, was on my bucket list quite a few years back. I had seen many photos of it in camera club competitions, so the SO and I made it one of the stops in our Fall Color loop. It's definitely NOT for the faint of heart - up a steep rough narrow mountain road. But it was a thrill to see it in person finally. So, this image a stack of 3 exposures.
Restoration of Simmons Gap Mill on Ivy Creek along what used to be an old Indian Trail through the Blue Ridge Mountains. The trail later became a wagon trail for settlers traveling West over the eastern range of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The mountains proved daunting for a group of Mennonites, a religious sect practicing modesty and simplicity, who chose to settle here, forming the still thriving Simmons Gap Mission. Since Virginia is on the Atlantic coast, it is sometimes hard to think of it as the gateway to the Old West, but it was.
I made my annual pilgrimage to the old grist mill on Cedar Creek a few weeks ago. Being there on a cool fall day with all the beautiful fall colors and solitude always makes for a wonderfull outing. The pathway upstream also provides a nice up close view of the stream.
Abbey Mill, also known as Fletcher's Mill, for a former owner named Abel Fletcher, a Quaker who was the inspiration for the miller in Dinah Craik's popular novel, 'John Halifax - Gentleman', published in 1856.
There has been a mill here since 1190, when the monks of nearby Tewkesbury Abbey had a channel dug from the River Avon to power a mill to grind grain. The channel is known as Mill Avon, and extends from the Avon to the Severn at the southern edge of Tewkesbury. The 12th century mill was rebuilt in 1793 with 4 wheels. It remained in operation until 1920, but could not compete with the larger and more modern Healing's Flour Mill, further north along the channel. That mill in turn went out of business.
Hebden Bridge, West Yorkshire
Been on my bucket list for quite some time. Didn’t bother checking the weather conditions… just went for a morning out and the compulsory full breakfast in Hebden Bridge afterwards. Was taken back by the recommended car park at Clough Hole… very hilly and sections of single-track road leading to it. It’s only ¾ mile walk to the actual mill from the car park, but very steep if you take the direct route down the boulder steps or the meandering longer route… either way I was knackered on the way back. Need to restart my fitness campaign again!
Having said all that, quite happy with how this has turned out. Better conditions and this would make a stunning print, especially with winter snow on the ground.
Gayle Mill, dating from about 1784, is thought to be the oldest structurally unaltered cotton mill in existence. It is located in the Wensleydale hamlet of Gayle, England, 1 mile south of the market town of Hawes. It lies within the Yorkshire Dales National Park.
WESTZAAN - The Schoolmaster is the last paper mill in the world that on wind power works. The mill was originally built in 1692 and is still in daily use. There is Zaansch plate, a paper type, manufactured. The owner is since 1976 the Association Zaansche mill. The mill is hexagonal, a rarity, only seven other mills in Netherlands also have a hex socket construction.
WESTZAAN - De Schoolmeester is de laatste papiermolen ter wereld die op windkracht functioneert. De molen werd oorspronkelijk in 1692 gebouwd en is tegenwoordig nog dagelijks in gebruik. Er wordt op ambachtelijke wijze Zaansch Bord, een papiersoort, vervaardigd. De eigenaar is sinds 1976 de Vereniging De Zaansche Molen. De molen is als zeskant opgetrokken, een zeldzaamheid, slechts zeven andere molens in Nederland hebben ook een zeskante constructie.

During our short holiday in England we visited the Forest of Bowland for 2 days. Heather and withered ferns add color to the landscape. We enjoyed this wunderful moorland during our walking and driving through the area. Dunsop Bridge, Forest of Bowland, 2023.

PP In Lightroom NOT HDR.......Various mills have occupied this spot since the first building was erected in the year 969. In the Middle Ages, the mill was owned by the nearby Benedictine Abbey, and peasants were under an obligation to have their flour ground in the mill. Part of the flour was withheld as payment by the miller. When in 1500 the Abbot diverted the river water in order to supply the mill with sufficient power, the neighbouring village was flooded. The villagers rose up in protest, and fifteen years later they were granted permission to change the course of the water in case of an emergency.The present building was probably built in the 17th century, and was extended in the 19th century. In the 1930s, the mill was decommissioned. Local residents bought the building and it was given to the National Trust

This is the Cable Grist Mill at Cades Cove in the Smoky Mountains. Milling lay at the heart of the small community which inhabited Cades Cove from the 1820s to the 1940s. Built between 1865 and 1868, the mill was the economic core of Cades Cove and has been brought back into operation as an historic mill. Cable Mill is the only surviving original mill in the area and was restored in the early 1930s. Today, the mill is in operation daily between April and October and visitors can catch a glimpse of what life was like for Cade Coves’ early settlers by seeing it in action.
