KATAMA
(South coastal beach area of Martha’s Vineyard)
The KATAMA of today is a 235’x 40’, 13.5-knot, “freight” vessel. In 1981, she started life as an Offshore Supply Vessel running to oil rigs and platforms in the Gulf of Mexico. 1988 marked her first conversion to ferry service when the SSA added a rounded stern to fit loading ramps and a small passenger area. Ten years later a fifty-foot midsection was added along with an engine upgrade to more powerful EMDs. KATAMA is certified for 149 persons on board and serves (on most schedules) Martha’s Vineyard as a truck and back-up car carrier. She also performs important tasks such as moving all of the Island’s SEMASS recycling plant trash across the Sound; bringing hazardous propane and petroleum products to heat Island homes and power Island vehicles; and moving every sort of general cargo to power the Island life and economy.

Tonight, I had the opportunity to shoot the Flaunt Runway Fashion Show with Marc Benton. We had a great time!
We decided to arrive around 2:30 so that we could be there for set up and to get some ‘behind-the-scenes’ preparation shots. Since I was going to be coming from another shoot in the morning, I brought all my lighting gear with me and offered a free shoot to any of the models after they were out of hair, make-up, and wardrobe. I’m glad I did because I think we ended up with some great shots…
The street in front of the gallery was closed so I decided to do a few in that location with the models. I mean, when else are you going to get a completely empty street in DC? The sun was shining really bright on the street but I decided to shoot into it anyway. My general set up for most of the street shots was two Speedlites, one at the model’s eye level (camera right) and one aimed at around the model’s midsection (camera left). I changed the position of the light a bit depending on the model’s pose and as the sun started going down but the general idea was the same. I metered the sky down to about f/20 or f/22 to darken it as much as I could and then cranked the strobes up to full power. I then positioned myself so that the sun would be right behind the model’s head. Most of them had their hair teased really high so I thought the sun would make an excellent backlight to illuminate the hair.

Lacking its base into which it was set by means of two attachments, which are rectangular in cross-section, placed on the soles of the feet.
The statue was found in 1880, in Lower Egypt, on the hill of Kom-Toruga, near Lake Mariut, south of Alexandria. Late Period, end of 25th Dynasty, ca. 670 BC. It had ritual, votive, and funerary functions.
The statue is depicted striding soundly with its two feet; the left foot is forward in a walking stance, indicative of movement and energy. The left arm is bent under the chest and most likely held a hieratic scepter. The right arm, extended closely against the body, held the menit (musical instrument and necklace). The scepter and the menit make clear her priestly status and her high social position and were the symbol par excellence of priests from the higher social classes. The long, diaphanous robe, which is decorated all over with incised patterns that were filled with precious metal wires (technique of damasking), accentuates the beautifully shaped, sensuous body. The decoration is divided into fine horizontal bands, which alternate with four thinner strips at the midsection, the pelvis, the thighs, and the knees. The first band, which covers the torso, is wider. The bands are decorated with representations of divinities from the Northeastern area of the Nile Delta (the homeland of Takushit), while the strips are filled with hieroglyphs that communicate prayers to the said divinities.
Her name means “the Ethiopian” and possibly refers to a family connection to or a marriage with an Ethiopian. According to the inscriptions that the statue bears, her father was Akan II, the Great Chief of the Libyan tribe Ma, and her office was of priestess “waab” (pure-chaste priestess), which according to the religious hierarchy was the lowest priestly title.
The use of the statue was ceremonial while the priestess was alive, and was part of the ritual equipment of the sanctuary, in which there was a priestess. After her death, it was used for votive and funerary ends and it decorated her tomb, which, according to the custom of the time, is located within the sanctuary precinct.

Banded Water Snake (Nerodia fasciata fasciata).
Along Plum Orchard Pond Trail behind the Visitor Center in St. Mark's NWR. This was a rather large snake, at least 4 ft maybe pushing 5 ft.

I think it's a Yellowbelly Water Snake (Nerodia erythrogaster flavigaster), but not 100% sure, maybe a Banded Water Snake. The lower lateral yellow spots in the midsection make me question it a bit. This was a rather large snake, at least 4 ft maybe pushing 5 ft, which is large for either species, unless it's actually something else I haven't considered.

today i found myself within vicinity of the rally in central London. i ran around the perimeter of the group and managed a few photos before the police decided to tighten up and not let us through to charing cross road. this was the first photo i took, behind the police line. these people were going back to their car, probably to ensure the safety of this little girl. she had a drawing stuck to her placard, with words written in a language i couldn't understand and did not recognize. there was a stickman shooting another stickman with a thick rectangular gun. the only other color that illustrated the black and white drawing was red.
while i was still there in the midst of it, along a midsection of a road together with others that had cameras, phone cameras; and journalists with cameramen, the group started going in my direction. police began to run across, taking position. for a moment, in all the push and shove, i thought i was going to get caught in everything. i ran over to behind the police line and it made all the difference.
i'm not sure if anyone thanked them, the Metropolitan Police. i hope for the chance (in all unharmed-civilian-ity, of course) to thank them one day. i was able to say "thank you" to one, but it was after i'd asked him a question.
i stopped following world events quite a long time ago (forgive the ignorance), but having come across this, i looked it up - for all i knew was that people were dying in Palestine.
and i was just shocked when i'd understood what was happening. what a division. what an unnecessary division. and such irony. nothing else comes to mind except Thomas Hardy's poem Channel Firing :

(the voice that speaks in this verse is one of a group of skeletons that had awoken to gunnery practice and promptly thought it was "judgment day". the poem was written april 1914, four months before WWI. i believe hardy wrote this to provoke a better human condition. sadly, it's practical application today shows that he has not completely succeeded in that.)

After the two base sections were complete, I used some more 1 3/8" x 5/8" strips to create the height of the columns, which were slightly over 6' tall.
Drilled holes in the top boards tight enough to hold the strips standing, then reinforced with screws at the bottom.

Male American Alligator, Alligator Farm, St. Augustine, FL
I found this litte YouTube video shot at the Alligator Farm online. The video sucks, but it give you a pretty good idea what this mating call actually sounds like. A few of my friends thought it's fake... from a tape... but trust me it was darn real. I had heard it before, but never saw the gators that frisky.
This guy here definitely was The Boss, he was the biggest gator around and made the water bubble around him:
Although alligators have no vocal cords, males bellow loudly to attract mates and warn off other males during mating season by sucking air into their lungs and blowing it out in intermittent, deep-toned roars.
Male alligators are also known to use infrasound during their mating behavior, as one of their routines is to engage in bellowing in infrasound while their head and tail is above the water, with their midsection very slightly submerged, making the surface of the water that is directly over their back literally "sprinkle" from their infrasound bellowing, in a so-called "water dance".
I should have brought my P&S to "film it".
Annette was on the other side of the boardwalk and got a shot of the whole gator doing it's mating dance, water bubbling routine.

First, let me say what a great idea this is. It's great to know that there are others out there sharing their D-Lives. So here's my first full day, complete with a talking tummy... :D

A large 13th Century gothic castle, first mentioned in 1350, which was destroyed in Bohemian-Hungarian wars in the 15th Century. It was a quite large castle complex with triple configuration - a large and long bailey, three main trechnes, a midsection and a separate core. The disposition is still well visible, a path follows the first trench around the bailey, through the second and third trench up to the core. Two drawbridges isolated the core, which was otherwise surrounded by inaccessible steep rocks. It´s well walkable and very popular by tourists.
