Meeting Kyra

Theme: Welcome To The World - Kevin Rudolf

All the time that you were gone,

I thought about how things went wrong

Now you're coming down to earth

Okay, hello, welcome to the world

Dom had been paused at the tunnel for a while. Coming out of his contemplations, he notices a female feline just as she takes off down the street. He hops up on the awnings and then follows her down. When she pauses in the midsection of the street, he pauses and mews down to her. In reaction, the female feline purrs loudly as she senses someone close. Hearing her purr, Dom's tail starts to twitch with interest. He hops down to more formally greet. "Hello there. How are you this evening?" He grins behind her so that it would be one of the first of his features she meets were she to turn around.

The female feline notices someone standing behind her. She doesn't like to be taken by suprise, and thus quickly pulls out her knife. She hisses at Dom. "I don't take kind to strangers creeping up on me."

He just stands there as she pulls her knife on him. "My name is Dom. So, you can either put away the knife, or at least know me by name, were you to be successful in gutting me with that thing."

She laughs. "If I wanted to gut you, you would be a dead cat by now. I'm Kyra, but you can call me Ky."

He grins confident. "Fair enough. And nice to meet you Ky." He looks at her curious, "So what you doing out on these bustling streets at night?" And yes, there was a sarcastic air of humor on the 'bustling streets' part.

Kyra smiles. "Hunting food. Not much to eat around here. And it's nice to meet you as well Dom."

"Yeah, I haven't seen but the stray human about tonight," he then eyes her a bit and chuckles, "And another stray cat at that."

"So what are you doing wandering Midian?" She asks with a smirk. "Ya know this ain't the type of place you wander about being a curious kitten?"

He shrugs. "But I am a wanderer. So, kinda part of the job description to roam about. And well, being a cat, kinda hard not to have curiosity, being natural and all." He winks to her.

"You got spunk," she says with a smile, "and, well, I admire that. Not many cats 'round here have that anymore." She looks him over.

Dom listens to her curious, "Really? Why not?" He smiles a bit as she looks him over.

Kyra looks around before responding. "If you haven't noticed, this city ain't exactly booming, if ya dig."

He nods. "I can see. What happened?" He pauses then adds, "I mean. This city couldn't have always been like this."

She sighs. "Don't really know. It was dead when I arrived. I hear some talking about it making a come back, but I don't believe them." She starts to pull on her ear.

"Well, suppose there's worse places to have hope for than this." He can't think of any off the bat, but, standing here, it reasons he sees soome reason to give things a go. At least until he starts wandering again anyways. At any rate, he changes the subject, "So, what do you do besides hunting here?"

She shifts her eyes to the ground. "Stay hidden, mostly. Do odd jobs to make a little money. Midi is just a stop. I'm just kinda stuck here until I see fit to move along again." She continues to pull at her ears, and looking down.

Dom sees her look down. He hrms after listening, "Just a stop? I think not. Something keeps you here. Otherwise, if just simply stuck, I would advise smuggling yourself on to elsewhere. But I think there is something you try to find, or otherwise holds sway over your interest."

Kyra is speechless at what Dom has just said. "I have my reasons," she finally manages to spit out. "I'm trying something new, other than running. Change isn't always a bad thing, and, well, I think I finally found some good in my life for once." She looks up to Dom, and starts to fidget and mess with her hair.

"We all have our reasons," he says with a smile. "No worries. You didn't ask for mine, and I don't ask for yours." He chuckles a bit, "Not that there's a lot to it for a wanderer anyway." Dom notices her fidget and decides to change the subject. "So, what is a good place to get a drink around here?"

Kyra points behind Dom. "Snake Pit. Unless your looking for a strip joint, which also has a bar." She tries to force a smile.

Dom looks to where she points, then shakes his head, "Just a drink, really." He then adds, "You want one? Not that I have a lot of credits to spend, but," he shrugs.

"Sure," she says, smiling, "I'll join you."

He smiles and leads the way.

2023's SHIPtember build is (I think) complete!

A chunkier and generally bigger build than last year's cruiser Aegirocassis, this is my first ever minifig-scale SHIP and a departure from previous build strategies on a number of fronts:

- For the first time I tumbled to the idea of building the vessel in sections and snapping the sections together afterwards, so the crew section, spinal midsection and engine block were all built separately. I've heard of other people doing this before, but it's always gone against all my childhood instincts to build it in one piece and build it strong.

I tell you, though: it was a lot more manageable only having to manipulate a piece of the whole to put it together. From now on, unless there are other considerations, this is how I build SHIPs.

- As stated earlier, it's minifig scale, and by far the largest minifig-scale space construction I have yet built. There's a lot of fun to be had building a really large minifig-scale ship, but I'd always felt unable to produce a sufficiently interesting interior and if you're building at 'fig scale you really have to. This didn't need or get a really spectacular interior compartment, but baby steps.

- It's a civilian vessel. The "LCS" in the name I eventually settled on stands for "Light Container Ship"; I envisage this as being a spacegoing equivalent to a long-haul big rig as opposed to a giant commercial freighter; something that can haul 1-2 standard shipping containers (not included) held in magnetic clamps beneath the central spine. Previous SHIPs have all been decidedly military or at least explorer-type vessels, as well as being microscale they've been loaded with at least a few notable gun emplacements; this one is completely unarmed. It still follows my typical naming conventions, though, because I've named it after an animal, a stellar object or a mythological creature. Two of those at once, in fact.

- It didn't even use all of my blue, light bley and trans yellow, though it did come close. I'm contemplating building a little spacegoing Trans Am to go along with the spacegoing truck, for a real Smokey and the Bandit flavour....

Clocking in at 103 studs and thus beating out last year's submission by a single stud, the build is done.

Various angles to show off some of the features as well as the classic side view poster shot. Enjoy.

Sit on the floor on a mat and hold a weight with both hands out in front of your abs with your arms slightly bent. Lean back slightly with your upper body and elevate your legs off the floor. Rotate from side to side and touch the weight on the floor on either side. Remember to contract your midsection throughout the entire exercise as you twist from side to side. The more you look over your shoulder the more you'll feel it in your obliques.

JOHN P. WASHINGTON - CATHOLIC PRIEST

DURING THE EARLY MORNING OF FEBRUARY 3, 1943, THE USAT DORCHESTER WAS PART OF A CONVOY OF SIX SHIPS HEADING FOR GREENLAND WHEN AN ENEMY U-BOAT ATTACKED, FIRING A TORPEDO INTO THE SHIP'S MIDSECTION. THE DORCHESTER QUICKLY BEGAN TAKING ON WATER AND THE ORDER WAS GIVEN TO ABANDON SHIP. FOUR ARMY CHAPLAINS WORKED TO PASS OUT LIFE VESTS UNTIL ALL WERE GONE. WITHOUT REGARD FOR THEIR SAFETY THE FOUR CHAPLAINS GAVE UP THEIR OWN LIFE VESTS SO OTHERS MIGHT BE SAVED. THESE BRAVE MEN OF DIFFERENT FAITHS WERE LAST SEEN LOCKED ARM-IN-ARM ON THE SHIP'S HULL PRAYING AND SINGING HYMNS. THEY PERISHED AS THE DORCHESTER SLIPPED BENEATH THE ICY WATERS OF THE NORTH ATLANTIC.

From www.immortalchaplains.org:

"A convoy of three ships and three escorting Coast Guard cutters passed through 'torpedo alley' some 100 miles off the coast of Greenland at about 1 a.m. on February 3, 1943. The German submarine U-223 fired three torpedoes, one of which hit the midsection of the USS Dorchester, a U.S. Army troopship with more than 900 men on board. Ammonia and oil were everywhere in the fast-sinking vessel and the freezing sea. The four chaplains on board, two Protestant pastors, a Catholic priest and a Jewish rabbi, were among the first on deck, calming the men and handing out life jackets. When they ran out, they took off their own and placed them on waiting soldiers without regard to faith or race. Approximately 18 minutes from the explosion, the ship went down. They were the last to be seen by witnesses; they were standing arm-in-arm on the hull of the ship, each praying in his own way for the care of the men. Almost 700 died, making it the third largest loss at sea of its kind for the United States during World War II. The Coast Guard Cutter Tampa was able to escort the other freighters to Greenland. Meanwhile, the cutters Comanche and Escanaba, disobeying orders to continue the search for the German U-Boat, stopped to rescue 230 men from the frigid waters that night.

The four Chaplains were Father John Washington (Catholic), Reverend Clark Poling (Dutch Reformed), Rabbi Alexander Goode (Jewish) and Rev. George Fox (Methodist). These four Chaplains were later honored by the U. S. Congress and presidents. They were recognized for their selfless acts of courage, compassion and faith. According to the First Sergeant on the ship, 'They were always together, they carried their faith together.' They demonstrated throughout the voyage and in their last moments, interfaith compassion in their relationship with the men and with each other. In 1960, the U. S. Congress created a special Congressional Medal of Valor, never to be repeated again, and gave it to the next of kin of the 'Immortal Chaplains.'"

How the Corps Assesses Its Climate Forecast

The precipitation probability levels are: Above Normal (A), shown in shades of green; Below Normal (B) shown in shades of brown; and Equal Chances (EC), equal chance of (A) and (B), shown in white.

On May 1, the one-month outlook was Above Normal (A) in the northern Plains and Rockies, Equal Chances (EC) in the midsection of the basin and Below Normal (B) in the lower basin. The three-month outlook was for a mix of Above Normal (A) and Equal Chances (EC) precipitation in the upper and lower Missouri River basin. The Above Normal (A) outlook was mainly for eastern Montana, North Dakota, Missouri and Iowa.

Gavins Point Releases

The Corps held Gavins Point releases at 45,000 cfs in early May due to high tributary flows entering the river below

Gavins Point and downstream flooding.

Mountain Snowpack

The Corps began evacuating floodwaters from the upper reservoirs even before the large May storms. During high water years, the rate at which floodwater is evacuated is calculated monthly, or more frequently if needed, to facilitate a smooth transition in releases.

Because the ability to evacuate water is severely restricted during the winter months, most floodwater evacuation is accomplished during the navigation season (April 1 to Dec. 1). Thus, floodwater evacuation rates are defined as an increment of release above navigation flows.

The floodwater evacuation rate is based on a computation of water supply that considers the volume of water already stored in the mainstem and tributary reservoirs and the forecast runoff for the remainder of the year. The goal is to evacuate floodwater at the lowest rate possible over a long period of time to provide flood damage reduction for downstream communities.

On April 1, the rate of flood water evacuation was set at 10,000 cfs above full service navigation flows. As the mountain snowpack continued to climb during late April, the evacuation rate was increased to 15,000 cfs above

navigation levels on April 15, and to 25,000 cfs on May 1.

A tram operating route 2 about to depart Olympia Terminal. Behind it is anchored MS Silja Symphony, the overnight ferry to Stockholm that I was booked on. Olympia Terminal is used exclusively by Silja Line vessels for service to Stockholm and Tallinn.

Pictured here is a MLNRV II class tram, the older of two tram types in service on the Helsinki tram system. They were built in the mid-80s by Valmet, a Finnish company, and rebuilt over a decade ago with a low-floor midsection.

Foil and silver paint dots and strips added to match look of the 1/24 scale model I'm using for reference.

When using this lens, I was struggling immensely to get objects in focus the way they needed to be. You'll notice that the midsection of the coin is the only part of the image clearly in focus. While the rest of the coin is visible, I would probably need to utilize focus stacking to get the rest of the image in focus. I'm still impressed with the shear detail of this picture though,

I am on a CAD $50, hour-long Brewster Company tour, coming onto the midsection of the Athabasca Glacier to walk on it.

The Brewster Company hardens and packs the ice in this area daily, to eliminate the possibility of falling into a hidden crevasse. The cones in the background mark the boundary of the safe area.

On a midsummer midday, about 200 tourists are on the glacier at a given time, and they can choose to take photos, often with a few Canadian flags placed as props.

The Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines Black Watch at the Dover Cruise Terminal. Built in the 1970s as the Royal Viking Star, the ship was "stretched" with a new midsection in the 1980s. The cabin balconies on the second-to-the-top deck delineate the added section.

Alloa swing bridge was built in 1885 to cross the River Forth, and had its own little steam engine to turn the midsection. Like Naburn, there was a control box mounted high up above the track, and there was a signal box at the northern end. By 1968 the Alloa Railway south to Throsk and Larbert carried only freight, and inevitably, in 1971, the line was closed and the bridge deck was removed.

Now it would make a spectacular cycle route that could eliminate the huge dogleg to Stirling or the bridges to the east.

Blogged here.

I went gooberific with these shots. The big studded belt makes my midsection look thick, but it still felt more... I don't know... substantial a look than the traditional "Audrey" take.

Blah blah blah blah. I like this dress. Though I think it looks better on my form than on me.

My Dark Eldar Raider conversion - used the underside of some Eldar Falcon wings for the midsection, and then a bunch of the original Raider's bits to complete it. I still need to put the pilot and the gunner in, though. I'm thinking of yoinking the pilot off an Eldar Vyper I have laying around, chopping him up, and adding a Dark Eldar torso....

I sort my quilting fabrics by color and sometimes use them as backgrounds in my photography. After taking the my picture holding a pumpkin yesterday, I couldn't resist grabbing this pile of orange fabrics and capturing a pose with them.

Day 6 of "Week of Old Knits" series

raveled

I'm smiling awfully big for a sweater I am going to rip real soon... ahh, Klaralund. Another popular knit back in the day - "the day" being 2005. It definitely was a unique construction, but who was I kidding... horizontal stripes across my midsection? bell sleeves? ...and I thought this was a good idea?

It was the Noro... I did it all for the Noro. ...and now, I will rip it to reclaim that Noro for something else.

I guess when I was growing up I had a round and pink midsection, melted toes, 17 fingers, and a floating head... no wonder middle school sucked.

I created these observational studies of a skeleton since starting my Foundation Diploma to refresh my shading and drawing skills and to really focus on the shape and proportions of the human figure. Here I have used charcoal on A1 sheets. I am pleased with the drawings on the left of the feet and the collar bone, elbow joint and lower leg, because I feel I've accurately drawn the proportions and shading. I like the style I have developed using bold, calligraphic outlines with the charcoal, which I intend to develop further by experimenting with Indian ink and computer software to mimic the calligraphic style. The proportions of the midsection drawings are not necessarily accurate, but I feel there is movement and character within them and I have captured the different tones. I drew the pelvis study on a shaded sheet of paper to provide a mid-tone. I like how the darkness and depth within the image contrasts with the striking white highlights.

Day 141/365 - 52 days late

ba-bump ba-bump

Lots of selfshots recently O:

This was directly inspired by a photo here on flickr, but I can't find it anymore :( If any of you know it, please send a link my way so I can credit him. He was pulling his shirt up, his pants a little down, and of course his midsection was invisible. I think he had curly hair.

'154. Bathroom Confessions.' On Black

Bathroom Confessions. Wow. Two words I never thought I'd say together.

And so...

- I hate public bathrooms. I will hold pee in for hours upon hours to avoid them; I am dreading the potty training process because of this.

- I cannot pee in the ladies' room if I know some one who is in there with me; unless it is one of my sisters.

- I suffer(ed) from irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) for several years. It was pretty bad. To the point where I would not eat if I knew I had to leave the house, or if I did leave the house, I would eat about 3 Immodium. If I had to go out to eat I would take the Immodium, order food, and smoosh it around my plate so it looked like I ate some. I'd ask for it to be wrapped up and eat it in the safety of my home.

-I was really embarrassed about the whole IBS thing and wanted to kill my husband (then boyfriend) when he told people.

- The IBS led to other issues such as social anxiety and claustrophobia.

- Other people's bathrooms tend to gross me out. Especially if there's hair on the sink or the floor.

- I have only accidentally farted in front of my husband twice in our entire 14 year relationship. I don't know why. I think because he makes such a big deal about it, so I keep it to myself.

- Typing this out made me realize I should see a therapist.

-I made the shadows so dark to hide my midsection that I usually hide so well.

Multicolored for the reflective qualities of ocean, stream and lake – the Salmon’s element. The discrete ruffle at the “neck” of the model evokes the drama of a salmon leaping from the water. A closely-knit empire-style “bodice” and simple midsection disguise the lack of a salmon-waist (perhaps due to a lack of bicycling), below which the garment falls into folds, drawing attention to the model’s elegant tail. When these folds are opened into a train, they reveal a destructured “net” – a net which could never hold the Wild Salmon.

How do I know if I need Liposuction or Abdominoplasty? This is one of the most common questions, we hear from our patients. Many people are not happy with the appearance of their belly or midsection. The body contouring surgery is the best option to obtain desired results, but the question remains; what is the right procedure for me, Abdominoplasty or Liposuction? Liposuction helps to remove fatty tissue without removing extra skin.
