This Epaulet Skimmer Dragonfly gets it's name from the single white stripe on the side of the Thorax (the midsection of the dragonfly that holds the head, legs, wings and abdomen). You can just see the pale white stripe under the wing. They also have a noticeable waisted abdomen.

This one I found in the Costa Blanca, Spain.

Many thanks to all who take the time to view, comment or fav my images.

'In the wheel' as it is termed for obvious reasons. The male deposits his sperm on accessory genitalia on his midsection and grasping the female by the back of her head, she collects it with the tip of her abdomen. They can actually fly around 'in copula' like this.

I pushed the limits of this new camera for this but considering it is handheld at 1/200th at ISO 40000 it's pretty cool.

This is the view from the Lincoln Park Middle School parking lot as an evening Proctor Yard crew dumps ore on CN Dock 6 with a tunnel motor trio led by DMIR 408. Visible extending to the right is the boom of classic laker John G. Munson, which has been sailing the lakes since 1952. The self discharging bulk carrier was orignally coal fired and 649 ft long but in 1976 she was rebuilt with oil fired automated boilers and had her midsection expanded to lenghten her to 768 ft.

Indian dancers often wear leather materials, sometimes including a fringed apron that covers their midsection, and they may wear a ribbon shirt beneath their breastplates. Other common features are beaded capes and a feather bustle, headdresses with eagle feathers, leather armbands on the forearms, decorated sashes and ribbons which match the beadwork, and an eagle whistle worn around the neck. They may wear face paint, and carry a fan or a coup stick in their hand. The various parts of their outfits usually symbolize some aspect of the dance's origins in War Dancing. During the early days of the colonisation efforts on Hibernia, it became apparent that the drones used to colonise previous planets were too fragile to survive the ferocious Hibernian blizzards, and their mass-produced AI were unable to keep up with the constant readjustments and cross-calculations required to traverse the ever-changing landscape.

And thus, there was a need for both pilots of prodigious skill, and for long-range, heavy duty aircraft for them to fly.

Existing planes were too unwieldy to do the job, and the exposed rotors on helicopters were too easily damaged by the sheer quantity of solid ice moving around in the ice storms that ravaged the skies of the exoplanet, rendering them completely useless.

Again, the procurement crew had to turn to ex-military aircraft. The heavy duty, Rolls Royce shielded-intake drives of the Boxer AP30 were perfectly suited to survive the harsh weather and powerful enough to be able to lug cargo the long distances required. The forward engines were designed for vertical take-off and landing, negating the need for expensive and time-consuming runways.

The cargo gantry allowed for multiple containers to be loaded and unloaded easily by a small team on the ground, once again minimising the cost and increasing the efficiency of the whole process. A smaller hold located next to the crew habitat inside the fuselage could be packed with more sensitive supplies like rations and expensive technology.

What’s more, the cargo gantry could be refitted in minutes to carry smaller mining vehicles, and the heavy drives and pressurised hull allow it to undertake shortrange suborbital travel, allowing the Boxer to also undertake transport duties from the huge orbital colonisation ships to the exo planet’s surface.

As for crew, a pilot, copilot and navigator were all that was needed to operate the AP30. Volunteer crew, some military or colonial veterans, and others fresh-faced recruits from colonial worlds, formed the backbone of the colonial air service, and only the best and most reliable were handpicked to handle these beasts of burden.

On Hibernia, practicality is everything. The wide range of uses offered by this sturdy platform make it an indispensable cog in the colonial machine.

Built for the Hibernia world-building collaboration.

There’s a long story behind this build. The cockpit has been built for years now and it’s just sat on my desk, with different engine concepts coming and going but nothing ever sticking. When I joined the Hibernia group I decided this would be a perfect opportunity to finish this while I was feeling inspired.

I had a massive amount of fun making this boxy, ugly old dog of an aircraft. It took a while to get the whole thing to be stable but it’s now perfectly swooshable! It’s heavily inspired by some of the epic stuff that Andreas, Nick and Tayasuune made back in the old days.

I liked the idea of it being part spaceship part aircraft which was why I mixed the front VTOL engines with the more X-Wing style engines at the tail, and I like how it looks with that combination.

The whole thing is chunky and ugly but I made the gantry a little skinny so that it has a slightly agile look to it. The midsection behind the cockpit has loads of room and I could easily have added an interior, but I decided to pack it out with technic bricks to give the whole thing a bit more structural stability.

Huge thanks again to Toby for his help getting this bad boy to look right.

I threw in the Sprinter truck because why not, it looks sick!

The thousands of moth species in the family Geometridae are often referred to as inchworms when in the caterpillar stage. "Inchworm" comes from the way the caterpillar moves by arching its midsection and seemingly inching its way along a branch. This group of moths has a complete metamorphosis: They go through four stages during their life cycle.

This newest round of Necrosis (March 26-April 9) approaches! In collaboration with Her Geek Spot, Be My Mannequin? Pose Store is debuting TWO exclusive poses (and a FATPACK including both!) based on on this round's theme: Leviathan! In this picture, I tangled myself into the tentacles of the first of the two poses: Poor Unfortunate Soul.

With your purchase, you are given the pose itself as well as two tentacles: one for your wrist and one for your waist that wraps under your leg as well as shown in the picture. You have the option to rez them out or attach them to your avatar directly from your inventory! However, while you can rez them out, it will increase your land impact depending on which and what size tentacle you rez out from moderate to severe. So my recommendation would be to add them directly to your avatar from your inventory and adjust accordingly.

The BEST bit is that the tentacles all come copy/mod so you can adjust for any humanoid shape avatar! And, of course, the pose itself is copy/mod as well!

I am in love with how creative this pose is and how it can work for pretty much any size avatar. You can't help but chuckle nervously as you examine all the little details of the tentacles and how it fits so well around the avatar! Very creative indeed!

Be sure to run down to Necrosis when it opens on March 26 and DEMO Poor Unfortunate Soul! You won't be disappointed in what the 'boss' whipped up for you!

When I went for a long walk to clear my head, my friends told me I should go explore Octo Island and get out for the day.

"Go to Octo Island" they said. "It'll be fun!" they said.

The legend said a creature lurks in the underwater caverns beneath the rock but it was just an old wife's tale...or so I thought.

I waded through the shallows of the beach and made it to Octo Island and felt....anxious. I told myself I was just being silly...until the small pool of water I was inspecting began to shift and splash.

The next thing I knew a black tentacle began to creep up through the surface! HOLY CRAP!!! IT WAS REAL! I jumped up and began to run but it was faster than me!

The large tentacle caught me around my midsection, knocking the wind out of me as it yanked me back towards the pool. I couldn't even scream for help! I could feel its tentacle sliding around my waist and lifting me into the air only to feel another one wrapping around my right wrist. What the hell?! As the first tentacle slid between my legs to wrap around my thigh, I began to scream for help...but there was no one around.

When I made it home much later that evening, tentacle sucker marks all over me and my shorts barely hanging on my hips, I could only flip off my friends as they stared in shock! They asked me what happened but I refused to say. It's my secret; well, mine and the creature that lived beneath Octo Island.

FGR - My favorite body part

I guess it must be my legs. So many other parts are just not keeping up with my mental image of myself. My midsection is growing, my eyes are blurry, I only hear what I want to hear anymore and don't get me started on the internal organs....

Still by no means done, but dammmmnnn......

still needs a fair amount of work especially in the midsection and lower back. also still gotta see if there's anyway to make him gun or shield worthy (not too optimistic there). but atleast he's standing up pretty good on his own for more than a week now, not leaning against anything. shoulders do sag a fair amount though. all in all, i'm pretty happy with him.

In 2002, the tug was acquired by the McAllister Towing and Transportation Company of New York, New York. Where she was renamed as the Justine McAllister.

Prompt: Create an ultra-realistic digital fine art painting of the tugboat Justine McAllister as it leaves New York Harbor, New York City skyline in the distant background, viewed in a wide-angle panoramic horizontal composition.

The vessel should retain its accurate proportions and authentic detailing — a robust, traditional tugboat with a deep red and black hull, broad white midsection stripe, and American flag fluttering proudly on the aft deck. The name “JUSTINE McALLISTER" – "NEW YORK, NEW YORK” should appear clearly on the bow in gold lettering. Capture the heavy-duty structure of the tug with its multi-level red pilothouse, black smokestack with twin exhausts, angled mast rigging, lifebuoys, deck ladders, and rubber fender tires wrapping along the sides.

Depict the vessel cutting steadily through open water, leaving a white foamy wake trailing behind. The sea surface should shimmer with gentle waves and reflected light, rendered with visible brush strokes to convey natural motion and texture. The background reveals a distant, hazy shoreline under a clear blue sky, emphasizing the sense of open space and maritime freedom.

The art style should emulate a museum-quality digital fine art painting, with visible brush strokes and rich painterly texture that convey craftsmanship and realism. Maintain high resolution, no noise, no grain, with precise lighting and reflections that highlight the vessel’s steel surfaces, weathered details, and movement through the sea.

Aspect Ratio: Wide panoramic horizontal

On this day the goal was to head out to Wakayama, away from the normal crowds. But before that happened there was one more place in Kyoto I needed to hit, Nanzen-ji Temple.

Even though it was freezing cold, I arrived at around 7:30. The sun was still mostly behind the trees on the mountain, providing a good opportunity to play with light and shadows. The grounds, despite barely having any sakura, still had plenty of other photogenic spots.

Of particular interest was the brick aqueduct to the south. I don't know, but something made entirely from brick seems like a rare occurrence in Japan (where everything that I saw at least was made of wood, tile, or steel). There's a stairway behind it leading to the top of the water flow and I couldn't pass up the opportunity for a motion shot. The water looked almost silvery as it rushed.

Because of the temperature I was primarily dealing with mist coming off the water at the more calm end of the aqueduct (you can see the water being more still in the image at the other end). After fixing that up in editing I fixed a few problems such as dead foliage which took away from the image. And a branch which for some reason, even in the original photo was missing it's midsection.

This shot has a certain urban aspect to it, which is surprising considering the context of the surrounding area. The structure of the aqueduct itself greatly contrasts this image. I'll get to it soon enough

Built for SHIPtember 2023

Retrofitted from a commandeered fuel-guild supertanker for commission into the Alliance Fleet, the Edict was stripped down nearly to its core and fitted with an immense antimatter cannon along its central spine. This massive weapon is capable of single-handedly decimating entire enemy capital fleets in moments. The addition of the cannon required extreme modification to the ship's midsection, as evidenced by the myriad mechanical components still visible beneath the bridge superstructure. Additional armor may become necessary to protect this section during continued service, but in order to make her mission-capable as soon as possible, it was omitted temporarily. The massive fuel tanks located behind the ship's plating were left in place and are now used to fulfill the intensive power requirements of the superweapon and to contain its antimatter payload in magnetic suspension.

Other additions included upgraded armor plating and a heavy armament package bolted directly the external hull wherever possible.

This retrofit created a supremely intimidating dreadnought-class offensive platform. However, even in the vastness of space this presents a large and opportune target. Because of this, it typically operates with the support of a battle group composed of fighter carriers, battleships, destroyers and various support ships.

~I wanted to go big to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the building challenge that firmly cemented the end of my dark ages, so this is the largest, most intensive ship I have built. I also spent most of August completing the fleet described above, with the intention of uploading a ship every few days, culminating with this one at the end of September. However this SHIP alone took nearly every bit of free time I had in September and this quickly became impossible. I also ended up changing the color scheme slightly and now the rest of the fleet doesn't match. My new plan is to update the color blocking on the rest of the fleet and upload them individually throughout October and try to do a composite with the entire fleet as soon as possible. Here's to hoping...

International Drive, commonly known as I-Drive, is a major 11.1-mile (17.9 km) thoroughfare in Orlando, Florida, United States, and is the city's main tourist strip. I-Drive is located several miles southwest of proper Downtown Orlando in the southernmost limits of the city. The International Drive area serves a similar purpose to that of the Las Vegas Strip in Las Vegas as the core of the tourism area.

International Drive stretches approximately 11.1 miles, with the northern part extending into the southernmost city limits of Orlando and the remainder of the central and southern portion located in unincorporated Orange County. An additional extension which does not directly intersect with the main section of International Drive is known as International Drive South, partly located in the northern portion of Osceola County. Surrounding cross-roads include Sand Lake Road, Kirkman Road, SR 536, and Universal Boulevard, which runs parallel to the midsection of International Drive.

I-Drive has four lanes, two in each direction, from its north end at Oak Ridge Road to Pointe Plaza Dr. (former Universal Blvd. south end; see below), and again between the northern and southern intersections with Westwood Blvd. It has six lanes, three in each direction, from Pointe Plaza Dr. to the Beachline Expressway (the eastbound ramps to the Beachline tie into the northern intersection with Westwood Blvd.), and again from the southern intersection with Westwood Blvd. to its end at SR 536. The entirety of International Drive South, from SR 535 to US 192, is entirely six lanes. The section of I-Drive from Universal Blvd. to Sand Lake Road has no median or center turn lane, and frequently has heavy traffic and gridlock in the evenings in the tourism corridor, affecting Carrier Dr. and Sand Lake Road.

The International Drive area is home to the wax museum Madame Tussauds, the Orange County Convention Center complex, the Pointe Orlando entertainment complex, major hotels, SeaWorld Orlando, Aquatica (SeaWorld's water park), Fun Spot America amusement park, the ICON Orlando Ferris wheel, the world's tallest StarFlyer (opened June 1, 2018), the world's tallest Slingshot, the World's Largest Entertainment McDonald's, CoCo Key Hotel & Water Resort, the I-Drive 360 entertainment complex, museums, themed restaurants, bars, outlet malls, mini golf courses like Pirate's Cove Adventure Golf and other tourism-related commercial properties and tourist attractions such as Air Florida Helicopter Inc, Wonder Works and The Magical Midway. The major theme park resort Universal Orlando is also located in the area. Wet n' Wild was a water park formerly located on International Drive, considered to be America's first water park until it closed on December 31, 2016 to make way for Universal's Volcano Bay, which opened on May 25, 2017.

This close up of the lantern room of the 1888 stone lighthouse at Low Head shows its effectiveness. The lenses that concentrate the light have a massive range. The tower stands 19 metres (62 ft) tall, but the focal height is actually 43 metres (141 ft) above sea level. The light itself has a range of 43 kilometres (23 nautical miles).

"The original apparatus was supplied in 1833 by W. Hart of Launceston. He supplied six dozen Argand lamps with tin reflectors at three shillings and sixpence each. In 1835, the apparatus was upgraded by installation of a revolving shutter which was rotated by a weight-driven clockwork mechanism. In 1838, the original whale oil Argand lamps and the tin mirrors were replaced by a revolving catadioptric system, manufactured by Wilkins and Company of London. The lens floated and rotated in a mercury bath, which served as a bearing. The cost of these upgrades was £2000. In 1851, the luminous intensity of the lantern was further increased.

When the new tower was constructed in 1888, the revolving catadioptric apparatus was retained, and a cast iron and copper housing for the lantern (manufactured by Chance Brothers of Smethwick) was added.

In 1898, an auxiliary light was added to the tower. The assembly, manufactured by Chance Brothers, consisted of a two-wick lamp with a red lens that produced a red warning light to illuminate the hazardous Hebe Reef. The assembly is positioned such that the light shines from a window just above the midsection of the tower, about 6 metres (20 ft) below the main light.

In 1916, the lighting and lens assembly was extensively upgraded. A new revolving Fresnel lens (3rd order 375 mm f.r. triple flashing catadioptric) was installed. The whale oil lantern was also replaced with a 55 mm incandescent gas mantle lantern, and fuelled by vaporized kerosene. The lens and lantern were both manufactured by Chance Brothers; the total cost of these improvements was £1,348 13s ld.

On 12 April 1937, Hydroelectric power (generated at the nearby Duck Reach Power Station) was finally supplied to Low Head Lighthouse. The clockwork rotating mechanism was replaced by an electric motor, and the kerosene lantern was replaced by a 110 volt 500 watt electric lamp. The lantern apparatus currently uses a 240 volt lamp."

After the fall of communism in Hungary, industrial giant Ganz Works was split up and privatised to continue as multiple smaller companies.

The railway rolling stock division became known as Ganz-Hunslet, and even though the free market now made it possible for the railways to choose from a variety of more technically advanced and reliable products, the company managed to construct a few memorable pieces of Hungarian engineering before eventually going bankrupt in 1999.

The BVmot electric multiple units were designed and built in 1994. They had a modern design on the outside, advanced electronics and systems on the inside. Three units were built in driven unit + second-class + first-class + driving trailer configuration, with the two midsection parts having buffers and chain couplers, allowing them to be used with locomotive driven trains as well.

The units were air-conditioned, capable of reaching speeds of up to 160km/h, and multiple of them could be driven in sync to boost passenger capacity. Due to their intricate and sensitive systems, and the state railways' declining quality and care for general maintenance, the units were more often in the depot than out in service.

Out of the 3 units, only two driven units and two midsection parts remain in active service today, mostly working the line towards Belgrade with stopping passenger trains - when they're not under maintenance of course.

The reconstruction of the said railway line began on February 1st.

So I decided to head out the weekend before that, to consolidate the battered and painfully slow mainline and the beautiful but impractical EMU together, in the form of a drone shot.

The extended-range C-130E variant entered service in 1962 after being developed as an interim long-range transport for the Military Air Transport Service. Essentially a B-variant, the new designation resulted from installing 1,360 US gal (5,150 L) Sargent Fletcher external fuel tanks under each wing’s midsection and more powerful Allison T56-A-7A turboprops.

While the Military Airlift Command of the USAF was the primary operator of the C-130E, it also became a popular export model due to its increased range and avionics. The Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) began taking delivery of four C-130Bs in 1960 and then 24 C-130Es beginning in 1964. The Hercules became the mainstay of the RCAF’s transport fleet.

In this image, the first Canadian CC-130E (serial number: 10305) sits on the apron in its original 1960s RCAF livery. The aircraft entered service with the 436th Transport Squadron (TS) and transferred to the 429th TS, 424th TRS, 435th TRS, and eventually, the 413th TRS in September 2011, stationed at CFB Winnipeg as a technical trainer. The CC-130E has been in storage since April 2012.

the ship was built by the ST. Johns shipbuilding company in the second year of operations, and was the seventh of the 82 such ships built by the yard. The ship was completed in July 1943 and named after General Richard Montgomery, an Ulster soldier who was killed during the American revolution. In August 1944, on what was to be her final voyage, the ship left Hog Island, Philadelphia, where she had been loaded with 6,127 tons of munitions. She travel from the Delaware river to the Thames Estuary, then anchored while awaiting the formation of a convey to travel to Cherbourg France, which had come under Allied control on the 27th July 1944 during the battle of Normandy. When Richard Montgomery arrived off Southend, she came under the authority of the Thames naval control at HMS Leigh located at the end of Southend Pier. The harbourmaster responsible for all shipping movements in the estuary, ordered the ship to berth off the north edge of Sheerness middle sands, an area designated as the General Nore Anchorage. On the 20th August 1944, she dragged anchor and ran aground on a sandbank. As the tide went down she broke her back on the sand banks near the isle of Sheppey.

A Rochester based stevedore company was given the job of removing the cargo, which began on the 23rd August 1944, using the ships own cargo handling equipment . By the next day the ships hull had cracked open, causing several cargo holds at the bow end to flood. The salvage operation continued till 25th September, when the ship was finally abandoned before all the cargo had been recovered. Subsequently, the vessel broke into two separate parts, roughly at the midsection. Info from Wiki.

Not quite in the same cuteness scale as a hummingbird or a butterfly, a Common Chuckwalla lizard seen (behind glass) at the Living Desert reptile house.

According to Wikipedia: “Chuckwallas are stocky, wide-bodied lizards with flattened midsections and prominent bellies. Their tails are thick, tapering to a blunt tip. Loose folds of skin characterize the neck and sides of their bodies, which are covered in small, coarsely granular scales. The common chuckwalla (Sauromalus ater) measures 15 3/4 inches long, “

That sounds about right for this one.

The armor on this bot is light, as it's protection comes from a force field generated by it's upper crown and the emitters at it's midsection. It also comes equipped with a shoulder- mounted lazgun, and a rear mounted, 4 barrel defense gun. Common in the Human vs Valum front line encounters

Bristol Train Station, also known as Bristol Union Railway Station, is a historic railroad station in Bristol, Virginia. The station was built in 1902 by the Norfolk and Western Railway. It is a one- to two-story brick building consisting of a tower section; a long seven-bay, one-story midsection; and a six-bay, two-story east end. The tower has a hipped roof with deep overhanging eaves supported by long sawn brackets. Stylistically, the station fits into the pattern of early 20th-century American eclecticism, combining Romanesque with various European vernacular modes. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980.

"For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." ~Jeremiah 29:11

The entire midsection got redone, along with some edits on the tail. I think this merets it being a complete upgrade. Still holds two passengers as well. I personally like the wings much better than what I had last time.

The arms of three women, clad in bright blue saris at Amber Fort, Jaipur, are adorned with bangles. The wearing of bangles has social significance in Indian culture -- it signifies that a woman is married.

Swimmers making their way down the length of Ullswater. Still a long way to go. The orange blob is a floatation aid.

The railway is part of Constitution Hill, a Victorian development on the hill of the same name built by the Aberystwyth Improvement Company,[2] and form of early theme park. It consisted of arcades and a restaurant at the foot of the hill, the railway, and at the top of the hill a camera obscura and park. Constitution Hill was designed and engineered by George Croydon Marks, who later became a Labour peer, who at the same time designed the new pavilion for the Royal Pier.[3]

As part of Constitution Hill, Croydon-Marks designed into the development a meandering footpath as an alternative route. To allow this to pass over the railway on a footbridge, in the midsection 12,000 tonnes of rock were excavated to provide the railway with a lower path.

Facing north-northwestward and looking at the High Falls of the Pigeon River.

Though this photo was taken a year earlier, it shows the falls about six weeks later in the season than my previously posted photo of it. So the deciduous foliage has filled in more. Among the woody plant species visible here is Mountain Maple ( Acer spicatum; the light green, lobed leaves at lower left).

What really dominates the scene, however, is the high wall of jointed diabase. The magma from which it formed was injected in a more or less vertical sheet (termed a dike) within preexisting sedimentary strata of the Paleoproterozoic Rove Formation. This diabase is definitely hard stuff, and serves as a very effective natural dam over which the Pigeon River must spill.

While it is classified as an intrusive igneous rock—one that formed from molten rock that solidified underground—its relatively small crystal size suggests it cooled quite quickly and not far from the surface, in contrast to gabbro, its coarser-grained equivalent.

The dike is one of many exposures of Mesoproterozoic mafic rock in northeastern Minnesota. All owe their origin to the development of the Micontinent Rift approximately 1.1 Ga ago. What caused this great U-shaped breach in the midsection of what is now North America is still a matter of debate. But a recent interpretation suggests that an episode of crustal extension may have been followed or amplified by this region riding over an active mantle plume.

Nimble escort vessel. Hinged at the midsection to allow for sharper turns. Also, front and back have independent power generation and control facilities, allowing it to drive equally well forward or backward, or even with one power train system offline.

Hummingbirds appear to have favorite meal prepping areas. While I was distracted taking this picture, the bird was repeatedly wiping his bill, which I assumed was a cleaning habit. While looking at the picture on a screen, I could see a tiny insect adhered to the midsection of the bill, and only then noticed the extreme wear pattern of the plant stem. It appears that the epidermis, phloem, and cambium were worn down to the xylem. I was amazed. Gilbert Riparian is a great learning center.
