Chuckwallas are large lizards found primarily in arid regions of the southwestern United States and northern Mexico. Some are found on coastal islands. There are five species of chuckwallas, all within the genus Sauromalus; they are part of the iguanid family, Iguanidae.

Chuckwallas are a stocky wide-bodied lizard with a flattened midsection and prominent belly. Their tails are thick, tapering to a blunt tip. Loose folds of skin characterize the neck and sides of the body, which is covered in small, coarsely granular scales. The common chuckwalla (Sauromalus ater) measures 40 cm in length whereas insular species such as the giant chuckwalla of San Esteban Island (Sauromalus varius) can measure as much as 76 cm in total length.

They are sexually dimorphic with males having reddish-pink to orange, yellow or light gray bodies and black heads, shoulders and limbs; females and the immature have bodies with scattered spots or contrasting bands of light and dark in shades of gray or yellow. Males are generally larger than females and possess well-developed femoral pores located on the inner sides of their thighs; these pores produce secretions believed to play a role in marking territory.

The genus Sauromalus has a wide distribution in biomes of the Sonoran and Mojave Deserts. The common chuckwalla (Sauromalus ater) is the species with the greatest range, found from southern California east to southern Nevada and Utah, western Arizona and south to Baja California and northwestern Mexico. The peninsular chuckwalla (Sauromalus australis) is found on the eastern portion of the southern half of the Baja California peninsula.

The other species are island-dwelling and therefore have much more restricted distributions. The Angel Island chuckwalla (Sauromalus hispidus) is found on Isla Ángel de la Guarda and surrounding islands off the coast of the Baja California peninsula.[5] Two rare and endangered species are the Montserrat chuckwalla (Sauromalus slevini) found on Islas Carmen, Coronados and Montserrat in the southern Gulf of California and the San Esteban chuckwalla or painted chuckwalla (Sauromalus varius) found on San Esteban Island, Lobos and Pelicanos.

Chuckwallas prefer lava flows and rocky areas. These areas are typically vegetated by creosote bush and other such drought-tolerant scrub. The lizards may be found at elevations of up to 4,500 feet (1,370 m).

Primarily herbivorous, chuckwallas feed on leaves, fruit and flowers of annuals and perennial plants; insects represent a supplementary prey. The lizards are said to prefer yellow flowers, such as those of the brittlebush (Encelia farinosa).

Harmless to humans, these lizards are known to run from potential threats. When disturbed, a chuckwalla will wedge itself into a tight rock crevice, gulp air, and inflate its body in order to entrench itself.

Males are seasonally and conditionally territorial; an abundance of resources tends to create a hierarchy based on size, with one large male dominating the area's smaller males. Chuckwallas use a combination of colour and physical displays, namely "push ups", head-hobbing, and gaping of the mouth to communicate and defend their territory (see animal communication).

Chuckwallas are diurnal animals and as they are ectothermic, spend much of their mornings and winter days basking. These lizards are well adapted to desert conditions; they are active at temperatures of up to 102 °F (39 °C, Juveniles emerge first, then adults, as tempatures reach around 90 °F. Chuckwallas hibernate during cooler months and emerge in February.

Mating occurs from April to July, with 5–16 eggs laid between June and August. The eggs hatch in late September. Chuckwallas may live for 25 years or more.

The SS 'Richard Montgomery' was built by the St. Johns River Shipbuilding Company in its second year of operations, and was the seventh of the 82 such ships built by that yard. Laid down on 15 March 1943, she was launched on 15 June 1943, and completed on 29 July 1943, given the official ship number 243756, and named after General Richard Montgomery, an Irish-American soldier who was killed during the American Revolutionary War.

In August 1944, on what was to be its final voyage, the ship left Hog Island, Philadelphia, where it had been loaded with 6,127 tons of munitions.

It travelled from the Delaware river to the Thames Estuary, then anchored while awaiting the formation of a convoy to travel to Cherbourg, France, which had come under Allied control on 27 July 1944 during the Battle of Normandy.

When Richard Montgomery arrived off Southend, it came under the authority of the Thames naval control at HMS Leigh located at the end of Southend Pier. The harbour master, responsible for all shipping movements in the estuary, ordered the ship to a berth off the north edge of Sheerness middle sands, an area designated as the Great Nore Anchorage.

On 20 August 1944, it dragged anchor and ran aground on a sandbank around 250 metres from the Medway Approach Channel,[5] in a depth of 24 feet (7.3 m) of water. The general dry cargo liberty ship had an average draught of 28 ft (8.5 m); however, the Montgomery was trimmed to a draught of 31 ft (9.4 m). As the tide went down, the ship broke its back on sand banks near the Isle of Sheppey about 1.5 miles (2.5 km) from Sheerness and 5 miles (8 km) from Southend.

A Rochester-based stevedore company was given the job of removing the cargo, which began on 23 August 1944, using the ship's own cargo handling equipment. By the next day, the ship's hull had cracked open, causing several cargo holds at the bow end to flood. The salvage operation continued until 25 September, when the ship was finally abandoned before all the cargo had been recovered. Subsequently, the ship broke into two separate parts, roughly at the midsection.

During the inquiry following the shipwreck it was revealed that several ships moored nearby had noticed the Montgomery drifting towards the sandbank. They had attempted to signal an alert by sounding their sirens without avail, since throughout this Captain Wilkie of the Montgomery was asleep. The ship's chief officer was unable to explain why he had not alerted the captain. A Board of Inquiry concluded that the anchorage the harbour master assigned had placed the ship in jeopardy, and returned the Montgomery's captain to full duty within a week.

SS Richard Montgomery was an American Liberty ship built during World War II, one of the 2,710 used to carry cargo during the war. The ship was wrecked off the Nore in the Thames Estuary in 1944 with around 1,400 tonnes (1,500 short tons) of explosives on board which continue to be a hazard to the area.

Check out this GORGEOUS Antique Holloware Water Pitcher by The Homan American Silver Plate Company!

This grand old tarnished beauty stands 7" tall on her four dainty little feet, 8.5" across from her graceful curvy handle to the lacy edge of her generous pour spout.

The simple act of pouring a glass of water from this elegant antique will make you feel like a princess, for real.

If you enjoy the darkened patina of tarnished vintage silver, this pitcher is picture perfect! Otherwise she could use a really good polishing. I've left that choice entirely up to you.

She's been in service for a very long time, her plating is still very much intact, but please note that there are some scratches and a shallow 1/2" dent in her midsection. (Please use the Zoom tool to take a good close look.)

The Homan Manufacturing Company's history dates back to 1847. Henry Homan and Asa F. Flagg formed a partnership in Cincinnati, Ohio for the manufacture of pewter wares.

After Henry died, his widow and sons ran the firm until 1887. During this period, they changed over a great deal of their production to electroplating with silver and sometimes gold.

Between the years of 1896 and 1904 the firm was listed as the Homan Silver Plate Co. and were well known for ecclesiastical designs (chalices, beakers, tankards, etc.) Homan also had many commissions from the Ohio and Mississippi riverboat lines for the manufacturing of luxury equipment ranging from silver plated swivel lamps to fancy silver plated water pitchers. (Like this one!)

AGM-86 Air-Launched Cruise Missile (ALCM)

The Air-Launched Cruise Missile is a long-range, unpiloted craft. It provides the U.S. Air Force with a strategic weapon that can be launched outside enemy airspace. The missile can carry a conventional or a nuclear warhead in its midsection, just in front of the wings.

Radar detection is difficult because of the missile's small size and low-altitude flight. It can fly just above treetops at 500 miles per hour. Infrared detection is difficult because the turbofan engine emits little heat.

The missile navigates and locates its target by using several guidance systems. An inertial navigation system uses sensors and gyroscopes to measure acceleration and changes in direction. It is updated during flight by a more precise system that matches the contour of the terrain using maps stored in computer memory. On some missiles, a Global Positioning System receiver uses the military's network of satellites to detect positions with high accuracy. The target system, or the missile, may use a camera and image correlator to find the target with Digital Scene Matching Area Correlation. This guidance system is especially effective if the target is moving. A cruise missile can also be equipped with heat-sensing or light-sensing devices.

The missile is destroyed when the warhead explodes. Cruise missiles armed with conventional explosives have been used during hostilities in Iraq, Afghanistan, Sudan, and the Balkans.

The Chrysler 300 "letter series" are high-performance personal luxury cars that were built by Chrysler in the U.S. from 1955 to 1965. After the initial year, which was named 300-C, the 1956 cars were designated 300B. Successive model years given the next letter of the alphabet as a suffix (skipping "i"), reaching the 300L by 1965, after which the model was dropped.

1955 C-300

This first of the letter series cars did not bear a letter, but can retroactively be considered the '300A'. The 'C-' designation was applied to all Chrysler models; however for marketing purposes the numerical series skipped more than 225 numbers forward in sequence in order to further reinforce the 300's bhp rating. The 300 originally stood for the 300 hp (220 kW) engine. The C-300 was really a racecar aimed at the NASCAR circuits that was sold for the road for homologation purposes, with Chrysler's most powerful engine, the 331 cu in (5.4 L) FirePower "Hemi" V8, due to the hemisperic shape of the combustion chambers, fitted with twin 4-barrel carburetors, a race-profiled camshaft setup, solid valve lifters, stiffer suspension, and a performance exhaust system.

The car's "Forward Look" styling can be attributed as much to the Chrysler parts bin as designer Virgil Exner. The front clip, including the grille, was taken from the Imperial of the same year, but the rest of the car did not look like an Imperial. The midsection was from a New Yorker hardtop, with a Windsor rear quarter. There were few options available including selection of three exterior colors (red, white and black) and only one color of tan leather interior.

I think I need a Brazilian butt augmentation or something. And back fat removal! And a tummy tuck, boob job, arm lift and chin lift if you're taking orders... ;-)

This is the midsection of the Lena River, in central Russia. The image is about 1000 km (600 mi) across, and 500 m per pixel at full size. North is somewhat to the left of upwards.

In the north are large sand dunes, where riparian loess is exposed at the surface, right in the middle of the taiga.

A little to the right of the center bottom there’s a brighter green patch. This is a bench around the Lena River, and near its north end is the town of Olyokminsk (population about 10k).

When I rendered this I was poking around (at 250 m/px, actually) and noticed a highway-like feature running WSW from Olyokminsk and E to the gold-colored mines at Aldan, near the right edge. It didn’t appear on any maps I could find. It was starting to creep me out. Finally, after a lot of looking, I found a map showing roughly that route for a pipeline that isn’t scheduled to open until later in 2013. I assume that what we see here is the cut: a logged swath perhaps 100 m wide, with access roads and such, along which the pipe will run.

You can’t see it at Flickr’s regular scale here. Go to original size, though, and look between Olyokminsk and the mines, and it should be pretty obvious.

The Fuller Building or as it is better known, the Flatiron Building, is located in the borough of Manhattan, and was one of the tallest buildings in New York City upon its completion in 1902. The building was designed by Chicago's Daniel Burnham with John Wellborn Root in the Beaux-Arts style on a triangular island block at 23rd Street, Fifth Avenue, and Broadway, facing Madison Square.

Like a classical Greek column, its limestone and glazed terra-cotta façade is separated into three parts horizontally. Since it was one of the first buildings to use a steel skeleton, the building could be constructed to 285 feet, which would have been very difficult with other construction methods of that time.

The initial design by Daniel Burnham shows a similar design to the one constructed, but with a far more elaborate crown with numerous set backs near the pinnacle. A clock face can also be seen. However, under the advice of John Wellborn Root, this was removed from the design.

When completed, it was officially named the Fuller Building after the building's promoter George Fuller. Locals took an immediate interest in the building, placing bets on how far the debris would spread when the wind knocked it down and nicknaming it "the Flatiron" because of the building's resemblance to the irons of the day. The building is also said to have helped coin the phrase "23 skidoo" or scram, from what cops would shout at men who tried to get glimpses of women's dresses being blown up by the winds created by the triangular building. At the rounded tip, the triangular tower is only 6.5 feet (2 meters) wide. The 22-story Flatiron Building, with a height of 285 ft (87 meters), is often considered the oldest surviving skyscraper in Manhattan, though in fact the Park Row Building (1899) is both older and taller.

Today the Flatiron is a popular spot for tourist photographs, a National Historic Landmark, and a functioning office building, currently home to several book publishers, most of them under the umbrella of Holtzbrinck Publishers. The surrounding area of Manhattan is named the Flatiron District for its signature building.

The signature edge of the Flatiron Building was covered in black scaffolding from December 2005 to March 2006 for renovations. Sidewalk-level scaffolding remains.

Bearing the influence of architectural trends introduced at the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago, Burnham's eye-catching design combined elements of French and Italian Renaissance architecture in an effort to attract businesses to this formerly residential and retail-oriented neighborhood. The building's triangular plan was a clever response to the awkward site produced by the intersection of Broadway and Fifth Avenue. Its ornate but restrained facade is composed of stone and terra-cotta panels whose forms simulate the effects of rustication. Undulating bays break up the monotony of the building's tall midsection. The overall effect is that of a palazzo stretched to great height. Here, for the first time, the construction of a steel-framed skyscraper was witnessed in its entirety by the general public--a event which generated much response. The building fascinated photographers and was immortalized in the work of Edward Steichen and Alfred Steiglitz.

"I found myself agape, admiring a skyscraper — the prow of the Flatiron Building, to be particular, ploughing up through the traffic of Broadway and Fifth Avenue in the late-afternoon light." H.G. Wells, 1906

It was a big day for the doggies today. I finally reupped their passes to the dog park. Lake County Forest Preserve has 3 different dog parks and for a nominal fee each year you can be a member and take your dog to any of them. Today was our first trip there this year. Frankie and Lucy were pretty jacked to get started sniffing butts and rolling around in the grass. Frankie was kind of a punk, though. He was very defensive and aggressive. Maybe he forgot how the whole thing works? You are supposed to PLAY with the other dogs! Not eat them. Being a 25 lb squirt makes he think he has to act tough, I think. So of course you are thinking..."this picture isn't even of the dog park." Touche! AFTERWARDS, I took the babes to Petco to get some food. The light food has helped with the chunkage around each doggie's midsection but it has also turned them into four legged poop factories. Every time I turn around, they are squatting out another deuce. So I got regular food and light food to mix together. (Now you know everything you ever needed and wanted to know about my dog's eating and pooping habits.) Anyway, Lucy is a spaz and had to stay in the car. I don't think I could have naviagted the aisles and steered the carts with both of these monsters. Frankie also freaks out if he is left in the car. (Note: it is 60 degrees today. Lucy did not overhead in the car and was not in danger for the 15 minutes she was alone.) So I dragged him along. He looks quite dapper sitting in the ol' cart there, don't you think???

Senior couple (60s, 70s) holding hands in front of house.

In order to eliminate back pain that already bothers you or to stay away from injuries that may occur from day to day activities, it is important to keep the core strong and flexible. There is a number of exercises doctors and personal trainers advise you to do, but how about that time of the day when you are not able to attend a gym or hit the floor for some "ME" time?

There is a solution - SpinaliS chairs for active sitting. As a matter of fact that is the BEST SOLUTION because you don't have to do anything, but sit. At the first glance the SpinaliS chair looks like a well designed regular office chair, but there is a difference - a spring under its seat, which forces your body to keep itself in the balance thus working out your core muscles that in return will help you to get rid of the back pain and will improve your posture.

Check out SpinaliS Apollo Series chairs, which is an ideal choice for women or men with a smaller body type:

www.spinalis-chairs.ca/spinalis-chairs/apollo/

What the Core Does?

The area of the body, which is commonly referred to as the core, is your midsection and it involves all your muscles in that area including the front, back and sides. The core includes the traverse abdominis (TVA), erector spinae, obliques and your lower lats.

These muscles work as stabilizers for the entire body. Core training is simply doing specific exercises to develop and strengthen these stabilizer muscles.

If any of these core muscles are weakened, it could result in lower back pain or a protruding waistlines. Keeping these core muscles strong can do wonders for your posture and help give you more strength in other exercises like running, walking or sitting on a SpinaliS chair.

A large 13th Century gothic castle, first mentioned in 1350, which was destroyed in Bohemian-Hungarian wars in the 15th Century. It was a quite large castle complex with triple configuration - a large and long bailey, three main trechnes, a midsection and a separate core. The disposition is still well visible, a path follows the first trench around the bailey, through the second and third trench up to the core. Two drawbridges isolated the core, which was otherwise surrounded by inaccessible steep rocks. It´s well walkable and very popular by tourists.

Gillian Murphy in ABT's PBS televised production of Le Corsair, captured frame-by-frame from this Youtube Clip.

View from top to bottom starting on the upper left corner.

This was the second one of the series of 5 triple pirouettes she completed in a diagonal. The lesson here is that good turners can turn on a tilted axis. Even as Gillian Murphy is constantly moving forward, she begins to tilt but continues turning. The problem for most people is that they try to keep the spine pointing straight up and down even if the body is moving horizontally away from the point they are standing on, and that produces a bent midsection which is worsened by the centrifugal force. Good turners can pull their rotation axis into a line again even if that means the rotation axis is banked at an angle. This allows a wider tolerance for error where it's not always possible to be exactly straight up and down.

I am 100% in love with this book so far. I already LIKED Neil Gaiman before I started this book. It reminds me so much of Stephen King's older novels--the ones I fell in love with 18 years ago.

I've seen lots of "Random fact" pics but I dont usually do them. Here's my random facts for today. I have lots.

1) I do not read much Stephen King any more because I was so disappointed by "The Dark Tower." I really feel like the ball was not only dropped, but drop-kicked right out of the stadium. It was such a letdown... the whole midsection of DT7, the denouement. The epilogue was fantastic, because I have the suspicion he'd written that years ago. And because of the way those books tied in with so many other tales, they are spoiled for me as well. (IT, Tommyknockers, Insomnia, the stand, etc.)

2) (see note)

3) I have not washed my hair with shampoo in over a week. I tried doing every two days or so with shampoo (Sulfate-free) just at the roots, but ever since I cut out shampoo I feel like my hair really is nicer looking and healthier. I rinse and condition my hair every day so its not like I'm walking around with dirty hair. At first my hair was really oily every day but now that its been several days since I last shampooed, the follicles have stopped producing so much oil. At the time this photo was taken, it was about noon, I hadn't taken a shower or brushed my teeth or anything. So my curls are way crazy, but some of that is purposeful, I wanted my hair to look wild for this picture. :)

4) On weekends especially, if I dont have some sort of breakfast type food, no matter what time of day, for my first meal, it makes me a little grouchy. It could be a muffin or an egg sandwich, bacon, fruit or even a shortbread cookie with my coffee. As long as it "feels like" breakfast. I just dont like going out and getting a cheeseburger frist thing in the morning.

5) I can't submit this to The Rogue Players' pool because I played catch-up this morning and there is a limit of 2 per day. DRATS!

(Alligator mississipiensis)

The breeding season begins in the spring. Although alligators have no vocal cords, males bellow loudly to attract mates and warn off other males during this time by sucking air into their lungs and blowing it out in intermittent, deep-toned roars.

Male alligators are also known to use infrasound during their mating behavior, as one of their routines is to engage in bellowing in infrasound while their head and tail is above the water, with their midsection very slightly submerged, making the surface of the water that is directly over their back literally "sprinkle" from their infrasound bellowing, in a so-called "water dance".

The female builds a nest of vegetation, sticks, leaves, and mud in a sheltered spot in or near the water. After she lays her 20 to 50 white, goose-egg-sized eggs, she covers them under more vegetation, which, like mulch, heats as it decays, helping to keep the eggs warm. This differs from Nile crocodiles who lay their eggs in pits.[10] The temperature at which alligator eggs develop determines their sex. Those eggs which are hatched in temperatures ranging from 90–93 °Fahrenheit (32.2–33.8 °C) turn out to be male, while those in temperatures from 82–86 °Fahrenheit (27.7–30 °C) end up being female. Intermediate temperature ranges have proven to yield a mix of both male and females. The female will remain near the nest throughout the 65-day incubation period, protecting the nest from intruders. When the young begin to hatch they emit a high-pitched croaking noise, and the female quickly digs them out.

The young, which are tiny replicas of adult alligators with a series of yellow bands around their bodies, then find their way to water. For several days they continue to live on yolk masses within their bellies. The baby spends about 5 months with the mother before leaving her.

Alligators reach breeding maturity at about 8 to 13 years of age, at which time they are about 6 to 7 feet (1.8–2.1 m) long. From then on, growth continues at a slower rate. The oldest males may grow to be 16 feet (4.85 m)[15] long and weigh up to 1,200 pounds (510 kg) during a lifespan of 30 or more years. A recent study by scientists from the Savannah River Ecology Laboratory in South Carolina reveals that up to 70 percent of A. mississippiensis females chose to remain with their partner, often for many years
