Visiting from Los Angeles, Jules held interactive media workshops at the world’s coolest festival, The Darwin Fridge Festival. During the workshops participants had the opportunity to interact with the dLab, a mobile film and recording studio housed inside an esky. Participants engaged with a range of media technologies and learnt new skills using digital stills and video cameras, iPads and laptops to explore the benefits of digital story telling as a means of sharing their local knowledge to the greater community.
These are some of shots captured during Jules’ residency in Darwin. Including a photoshoot with some of the fridges designed by children in the region for the NT news, and sculptures created from recycled materials by the inmates of the local correctional facilities.
Man-made materials can fool people (even professional geologists) into thinking they are real rocks. I like to call such things "rock-us fake-us". Prima facie, this specimen somewhat resembles scoria, a frothy-textured volcanic rock. It's from Michigan, which does not have active or geologically-recent volcanism. This is "industrial slag", a by-product of some process in a factory.

In this workshop, designer Rahel Pfrommer taught the simplest and most important shape within jewellery making; the ring. Participants spent the session learning how to cut, shape and file silver and ended up forming their very own piece of jewellery, either a classic silver ring or a more sculptural piece of jewellery. In teaching this masterclass, Rahel used core parts of her practice which are driven by the line and dedicated to simplicity and small details.
