I took inspiration from Alison Watts amazing work, to explore form of material. I used oil-pastel, folded/arranged paper, and charcoal. The charcoal piece of the figure wearing fabric was a life-drawing piece I completed in a workshop at the RGU open day at Gray's School of art.

Students in the Harvard University Graduate School of Design course "Material Practice as Research:
Digital Design and Fabrication" assembled at the Ceramics Program to learn the basics of fabrication with clay. Mold making and casting, slab construction, using the extruder, and clay chemistry were demonstrated and discussed. Students will draw heavily on these methods during their semester-long design research projects.

Inspired by scientific research towards using mycelium as an economically viable material, the research project How to negotiate with a material sheds light on the protocols of power and control that come to play when using another living being for the production of a good.
Mycelium, the root-like structure of a fungus, is increasingly being used as an ecologically friendly alternative to conventional materials in packaging and construction. The research project *How to negotiate with a material*, traces the process of putting organic matter to scientific and economic use. To be seen are the results of artistic experiments with mycelium, such as dried Reishi mushrooms growing from paper waste, animated 3D-scans of moulding fungi as well as materials utilized in the cultivation process: FFP2-masks, latex gloves, syringes. By examining the imposition of human needs and expectations towards the mycelium throughout the experiments, the project sheds light on the protocols of power and control that come into play when using another living being for the production of a good

Human-transported material.—Mineral or organic soil material that has been moved horizontally onto a pedon from a source area outside of that pedon by directed human activity, usually with the aid of machinery. Human-transported materials are most commonly associated with building sites, mining or dredging operations, sanitary landfills, or other similar activities that result in the formation of a constructional anthropogenic landform. Human-transported material is recognized as a kind of parent material. It almost always has a lower boundary that can be easily recognized as a lithologic discontinuity or contact with a buried soil. Where it is 50 cm or more thick (or rests directly on a lithic or paralithic contact) it is recognized as a diagnostic characteristic for soil classification purposes. Most anthropic and plaggen epipedons formed in human-transported material. All soils in, Plaggic, and Haploplaggic subgroups, and most in Anthropic subgroups, formed in human-transported material. Some soils that are classified in Anthrodensic and Anthraquic subgroups formed in human transported materials. For some soils that formed in human-transported material, the nature of the material is recognized at the family level with a human-altered and human-transported material class term. Note: Human transported material that is less than 50 cm thick over a buried soil can be used to establish a phase of a soil series, or even another soil series, if the human-transported material affects use and management of the soil.

The Dapplegray series consists of very deep, well drained soils that formed in human-transported materials (HTM) on engineered hillslopes. Human-transported materials extend below a depth of 160 centimeters. The use of the Anthroportic subgroup is not currently permitted in the xeric soil moisture regime, but will be explored for future consideration.

Profile of a soil in Michigan that has a horizon composed of albic materials (albic horizon) in the upper part (white). The white color is indicative of the uncoated sand and silt particles that make up the albic horizon. (Scale is in feet).
Albic materials are soil materials that have been subject to eluvial processes to the extent that their color is determined by primary sand and silt particles. They are essentially void of coatings (such as clay and iron oxides). Some parent materials (such as volcanic ash or eolian sands) have colors meeting the definition of albic materials but, unless they are eluviated, they are not considered albic materials. Albic materials are typically found in association with illuvial features in the soil profile, such as an argillic, natric, or spodic horizon.
