Last Friday, in partnership with the Crafts Council, the V&A and the RSA, we were part of a London-wide extravaganza of materials and making, called Make:Shift:Do.
We kicked this off with a Pencil Making Masterclass with designer and pencil-maker, Ariane Prin, who taught participants how to make their very own pencils to take home, using simple recycled materials. Participants got their hands dirty and learnt how to create this essential everyday tool.
In this masterclass participants explored the use of different materials to make the inside “lead” and the outer casing of the pencil. For the core attendees could use a mix of clay and liquid graphite but what else would make a great material for writing? For the outer casing a mix of paper pulp and wood sawdust creates a natural pencil casing, would adding a wax help to make the pencil firmer?
Based in East London, Ariane Prin's studio is home to a wide variety of joyously messy material experiments. All of her projects originate in their specific social and environmental contexts, with materials chosen for their relation to the locality. Her work focus in making site-specific connections between human activities and environmental principles.
Light As Material Project (L.A.M.P.) is an interactive exploration taking place in the Bubbler Room, led by ceramic artist Juliette Walker. Throughout the residency all are invited to explore objects or things we use to bring light into interior spaces, both for utility and aesthetic value. Workshops include Collaborative Ceramic Lantern-Making and Cyanotypes + Clay.

Launching a New Pop-up Touring Exhibition
Over half a million Sikhs, Hindu’s and Muslims came to Britain because of the upheaval of Partition, the promise of economic opportunities and a safer life. In 2024 Essex Cultural Diversity Project was awarded funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund for Sikh, Hindu and (Pakistani) Muslim communities living in Essex to reflect on seven decades of their families' lives, to explore experiences, challenges, successes, and social change from 1947 to today.
Through the project we have captured people’s memories through oral history recordings, films and interviews. The project has created a touring pop-up exhibition by emerging Sikh female historian Simran Bance with original images, memories, materials and artefacts, belongings from the time of the Partition which migrants bought with them when settling in the UK.
The exhibition was launched at a special event at Essex Records Office on Saturday 1 February, which was on display along with the oral history interview recordings. There were also talks and a panel discussion with interviewees, who shared their memories.

Students gather to compete in the Materials Bowl knowledge and trivia competition on Sunday, March 19, 2023
Construction Career Day today at OSU/OKC. 250 students from Oklahoma City Public Schools attended the event. The Oklahoma Department of Transportation's Civil Rights Office is the sponsor of the event. Tools to Build Your Future is a yearly event to show students career choices that are out there in the construction field once they finish high school.

Sesión 2 del proyecto MIC 'Micotexturas: alternativas textiles con hongos', el cual busca crear un prototipo de tela hecho a base de cultivo de hongos, reutilizando residuos orgánicos y basura textil como fuente de nutrientes. Para ello, se recreará un ambiente de laboratorio científico casero con herramientas de bajo coste y utensilios que se pueden encontrar en casa.
Esta sesión incluyó el cultivo de hongos utilizando diferentes materiales orgánicos.

A la casa comunal del barrio Tacheve se entregaron los siguientes materiales: 198 metros de correas, 384 metros de ángulos, 343,14 m2 de cubierta, 462 m de correa tipo G, 2.000 pernos auto perforantes, 104 KG de electrodos, 10 galones de pintura anticorrosiva, 40 ms de cable de tensor 5/16, 8 grillete de acero y 4 tensor de acero.
El administrador del contrato municipal, Néstor García Ponce, indicó que todo el material entregado tuvo un costo de 12.200 dólares.

Sustainable Materials for Net Zero Asphalt Pavements – at the Estonian Embassy in Stockholm
A gathering of innovators, scientists, and infrastructure leaders at the Embassy of Estonia in Stockholm explored how biomaterials can decarbonize road construction. Hosted with Estonian cleantech innovator Fibenol, the event showcased lignin-based solutions and cross-sector collaboration to accelerate Net Zero asphalt pavements and climate-smart cities.
CleanTech Region was advising and mentoring Fibenol through the senior advisory program by Tehnopol.
