The light was terrible today, due to a dense veil of cloud across the sky, fading only marginally at sunset. Nevertheless, the Collared Doves were coming down to the path to test various sticks and twigs as worthy of nesting material. The method was simple, and fascinating to watch: each dove would lift a twig and then jab one end into the ground. If the twig didn't bend it was abandoned, but if it did bend, and then sprang back into shape, it was given the seal of approval and promptly taken off into the tall leylandii trees near our gate. It might be still quite cold, but the birds are building their nests. This year notional spring and true spring, which begins with the Equinox on 21st March, will pretty much be one and the same. I'm not holding out much hope for the early frogspawn in the shallow pond.

Day 1 we had the clean up, day 2 students came in grades to help us wash waste and seperate it into sections (plastic bottles, rope, plastic cups, bottle tops, etc).
Day 3, grades came to our working site for the sculpture in various intervals throughout the morning to help us cut shapes, weave bottle tops, fray ropes, staple plastics and whatever else they decided to create to decorate the main structure of the whales tail (that had been built the day before).

Imagine a world where solar panels remain ice free in the winter, planes are de-iced without toxic pollutants, and soldiers and first responders can apply lotion to protect themselves from frostbite.
That future could soon be a reality, thanks to a new grant awarded to the University of Michigan by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA).
The project is ramping up this month and will be the latest within DARPA's Ice Control for Cold Environments (ICE) program, which aims to control the physical properties of ice crystals to protect people and defense assets from extreme cold.
The project aims to find molecules that can be used to manipulate ice and snow in several ways, including changing the temperature at which water freezes, increasing and decreasing how strongly ice adheres to surfaces, and inhibiting or encouraging ice crystals to grow on surfaces.
