This is the Governor's Mansion at the Sharlot Hall Museum in downtown Prescott.
In the summer of 1864, workers under the direction of three contractors (Samuel E. Blair, Daniel Hatz, and John Raible) built this log house as the governor’s home and office. It is the oldest building associated with Arizona Territory still standing on its original location.
Called a “mansion” because it was very upscale and permanent compared to the shanties and tents of the time, it enjoyed a place of prominence in the young community. In the 1920s, thanks to Sharlot Hall, the building was repurposed to hold her collections of historic artifacts and the “Gubernatorial Mansion Museum” opened its doors to the public in 1928. Upon her death in 1943, the Museum was renamed in her honor.
Today it is furnished based on a letter written by Margaret McCormick and dated April 1, 1866, written to her friend Emma Denike of Rahway, New Jersey, where she describes “her home.” The Mansion also houses exhibits describing its construction and featuring artifacts found during restoration work in 1981.

In 1928, a remarkable woman named Sharlot Hall saw the need to preserve Arizona’s cultural heritage. Today, her vision has grown into a lush campus of 11 exhibit buildings—eight of which are historic, with one included on the National Register of Historic Places. We invite you to explore these unique pieces of our collection.
Sharlot Hall Museum is named after its founder, Sharlot Mabridth Hall (1870-1943), who became well-known as a poet, activist, politician, and Territorial Historian (the first woman to hold a salaried office in Arizona). She was one of the West’s most remarkable women. As early as 1907, Ms. Hall saw the need to save Arizona’s history and planned to develop a museum. She began to collect both Native American and pioneer material. In 1927, she began restoring the first Territorial Governor’s residence and offices to house her extensive collection of artifacts and documents. The “Gubernatorial Mansion Museum” opened in 1928. After her death in 1943, the museum was re-named in her honor.
Today, the Sharlot Hall Museum features eleven exhibit buildings (six of which are historic), compelling exhibits, and beautiful gardens, which serve as the setting for numerous public festivals and events. The east wing of the Lawler Exhibit Center presents the Pre-History of Arizona’s Central Highlands featuring the time of the Beasts to the first indigenous peoples; the main gallery provides a venue for temporary exhibits and displays; and the west wing provides a venue for special events and temporary exhibits.

Sharlot Mabridth Hall (October 27, 1870 – April 9, 1943) was an American journalist, poet and historian. She was the first woman to hold an office in the Arizona Territorial government and her personal collection of photographs and artifacts served as the starting collection for a history museum which bears her name.

The Science Museum in London commissioned Heatherwick Studio to design a Materials House, an exhibit to show “everything that anything can be made of” for the Challenge of Materials gallery.
Instead of prioritising any one material to make the House from, and then exhibiting small samples of all the other materials within it, the studio chose to make the House itself from all of the materials.
Six-metre high pieces of each material are bonded together into a single element of many strata, weighing some four tonnes. The edge of every layer is visible around the object, and each material shows its surface at one point as a protruding piece. The geometric pattern becomes increasingly complex as the layers accumulate.
The finished piece is an assembly of 213 materials, each material needing its own cutting and bonding technique, all together in over 2,000 individually shaped pieces sourced from more than 80 suppliers and sponsors. The Materials House was completed in 1999 and has remained a centrepiece of the gallery.
This image is looking at the upper half of the piece and is about 3m tall. The width is just under 2m, with the depth of the layers over 1m. The centre is hollow, with light coming in from the Museum's windows.

Statues were often reused, particularly in the Ramesside period (1292 – 1077 BC). Placed in new contexts, they were modified in order to be adapted to a new purpose, a new royal ideology, or a new architectural program. New inscriptions replaced the earlier ones and the facial features were often altered. In this statue, the accentuated curve of the eyebrows, the almond-shaped eyes, and the wide mouth with fleshy lips are still influenced by the style of the late 18th Dynasty. The long aquiline nose, however, is typically Ramesside. The lappets of the nemes headdress and the beard show clear traces of unfinished recarving.
The warm light of the late afternoon floods the grasses and lavender.

Portland Head Light is a historic lighthouse in Cape Elizabeth, Maine. The light station sits on a headland at the entrance of the primary shipping channel into Portland Harbor, which is within Casco Bay in the Gulf of Maine. Completed in 1791, it is the oldest lighthouse in Maine. The light station is automated, and the tower, beacon, and foghorn are maintained by the United States Coast Guard, while the former lighthouse keeper's house is a maritime museum within Fort Williams Park.
Construction began in 1787 at the directive of George Washington and was completed on January 10, 1791, using a fund of $1,500, established by him. Whale oil lamps were originally used for illumination. In 1855, following the formation of the Lighthouse Board, a fourth-order Fresnel lens was installed; that lens was replaced by a second-order Fresnel lens, which was replaced later by an aerobeacon in 1958. That lens was replaced with a DCB-224 aerobeacon in 1991. The DCB-224 aerobeacon is still in use.
In 1787, while Maine was still part of the state of Massachusetts, George Washington engaged two masons from the town of Falmouth (modern-day Portland), Jonathan Bryant and John Nichols, and instructed them to take charge of the construction of a lighthouse on Portland Head. Washington reminded them that the early government was poor and said that the materials used to build the lighthouse should be taken from the fields and shores, materials which could be handled nicely when hauled by oxen on a drag. The original plans called for the tower to be 58 feet tall. When the masons completed this task, they climbed to the top of the tower and realized that it would not be visible beyond the headlands to the south, so it was raised another 20 feet.
The tower was built of rubblestone, and Washington gave the masons four years to build it. While it was under construction in 1789, the federal government was being formed, and for a while, it looked as though the lighthouse would not be finished. Following passage of their ninth law, the first congress made an appropriation and authorized the Secretary of the Treasury, Alexander Hamilton, to inform the mechanics that they could go on with the completion of the tower. On August 10, 1790, the second session of Congress appropriated a sum not to exceed $1500, and under the direction of the President, "to cause the said lighthouse to be finished and completed accordingly." The tower was completed in 1790 and first lit on January 10, 1791.
During the American Civil War, raids on shipping in and out of Portland Harbor became commonplace, and because of the necessity for ships at sea to sight Portland Head Light as soon as possible, the tower was raised 20 more feet. The current keepers' house was built in 1891. When Halfway Rock Light was built, Portland Head Light was considered less important, and in 1883, the tower was shortened 20 feet (6.1 m) and a weaker fourth-order Fresnel lens was added. Following the mariners' complaints, the former height and second-order Fresnel lens were restored in 1885.
The station has changed little except for rebuilding the whistle house in 1975 due to its having been badly damaged in a storm. Today, Portland Head Light stands 80 feet (24 m) above ground and 101 feet (31 m) above water, its white conical tower is connected to a dwelling. The grounds and keeper's house are owned by the town of Cape Elizabeth, while the beacon and fog signal is owned and maintained by the U.S. Coast Guard as a current aid to navigation. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places as Portland Head light (sic) on April 24, 1973, reference number 73000121. The lighthouse was designated as a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark by the American Society of Civil Engineers in 2002.

The St Kilda Botanical Gardens are a very beautiful place to visit, not least for all for their wonderful array of roses found in the Alister Clarke Rose Garden.
"Best Friend" is a variety of hybrid tea rose created by the famous French rose breeders Meilland International Roses. Described as stylish, classic rose of great beauty and richness, "Best Friend" has vibrant blooms of deep, hot plum pink. Being a hybrid tea rose they have a strong sweet perfume. "Best Friend" was named by the RSPCA to honour the unconditional special friendship that comes from loving a pet.
The site of the St Kilda Botanical Gardens were established in the 1800's. The municipal council petitioned the Department of Lands and Survey to make this segment of land bordered by Dickens Street, Tennyson Street and Blessington Street a Botanic Garden. The gardens were formally established in 1859 when a boundary fence was erected. By 1907 significant donations of money and plant material had led to the establishment of a rosary, extensive flower beds and a nursery. Exotic forest trees were planted during the 1870s and Australian species were included in 1932. In the 1950s the Alister Clarke Rose Garden was established and a Sub-Tropical Rain-forest conservatory added in the early 1990's.

This image shows a picturesque scene in Otranto, a coastal town located in the southern region of Italy, specifically in the province of Lecce, Apulia. The setting appears to be a quaint piazza, characterized by rustic cobblestone pavement that adds a historic charm to the atmosphere. The square is surrounded by whitewashed buildings with slightly worn facades, hinting at the town's long history. In the foreground, there is an outdoor café with tables and chairs arranged for guests, though the umbrellas are closed, suggesting it might be early in the day or a quiet time.
The building featured prominently has an old-world appearance with weathered walls and red shutters, which is typical of Otranto's architecture that blends Mediterranean and historic influences. The arched window above the doorway is a distinct feature, adding elegance to the otherwise simple structure. The stone structure suggests a durable material common in the region, suitable for the coastal climate and reflective of Otranto’s history of fortifications against invasions.
Otranto itself has a rich history, having been a strategic port and cultural crossroads over the centuries. It was once an important Greek and Roman colony and later faced invasions from Ottoman forces in 1480, which left a profound impact on the town’s cultural and architectural landscape. This historical context is evident in its streets and buildings, which carry the influences of various civilizations that have passed through the region.
The image captures a blend of contemporary life and historical charm, with the café setting reflecting modern leisure against a backdrop of architectural heritage. This juxtaposition of past and present is a characteristic feature of Otranto, where daily life continues amidst the remnants of history, inviting visitors to appreciate its cultural depth while enjoying the simple pleasures of a quiet piazza.
