La Regenta "The [female] Regent") is a realist novel by Spanish author Leopoldo Alas y Ureña, also known as Clarín, published in 1884 and 1885.
The story is set in Vetusta (Spanish vetusto stands for "antiquated", "extremely old", a provincial capital city, very identifiable with Oviedo, capital of Asturias, where the main character of the work, Ana Ozores "La Regenta", marries the former prime magistrate of the city, Víctor Quintanar, a kind but fussy man much older than she. Feeling sentimentally abandoned, Ana lets herself be courted by the province casanova, Álvaro Mesía. To complete the circle, Don Fermín de Pas (Ana's confessor and canon in the cathedral of Vetusta) also falls in love with her and becomes Mesía's unmentionable rival. A great panorama of secondary characters, portrayed by Clarín with merciless irony, completes the human landscape of the novel.
The author uses the city of Vetusta as a symbol of vulgarity, lack of culture and hypocrisy. On the other hand, Ana incarnates the tortured ideal that perishes progressively before a hypocritical society. With these forces in tension, the Asturian writer narrates a cruel story of Spanish provincial life in the days of the Restoration.

La Regenta es la primera novela de Leopoldo Alas «Clarín», publicada en dos tomos en 1884 y 1885. En palabras de su autor, «fue escrita como artículos sueltos» que «según iba escribiendo iba mandando al editor». Gran parte de la crítica la ha considerado la obra cumbre de Clarín y de la novela española del siglo xix, la segunda de la literatura española y uno de los máximos exponentes del naturalismo y del realismo progresista.
La novela, cuya acción transcurre en Vetusta, una ciudad provinciana española tras cuyo nombre enmascaró Clarín a la capital asturiana, Oviedo, constituyó un verdadero escándalo en su momento, sobre todo en Oviedo: el obispo de la ciudad publicó en su contra una pastoral que mereció una réplica de Clarín.
En una ciudad de provincias, Vetusta, vive Ana Ozores, de familia noble venida a menos, casada con don Víctor Quintanar, regente de la Audiencia, del cual le viene el apelativo de "la Regenta". Ana se casó con don Víctor en un matrimonio de conveniencia. Bastante más joven que su marido, al que le une más un sentimiento de amistad y agradecimiento que de amor conyugal, su vida transcurre entre la soledad y el aburrimiento. Es una mujer retraída, frustrada por no ser madre y que anhela algo mejor y desconocido.
El autor se sirve de la ciudad de Vetusta como símbolo de la vulgaridad, la incultura y el fariseísmo. Ana Ozores es un personaje aquejado de aquella patología del espíritu que se conoció como bovarismo. Desde otro punto de vista, Ana encarna la idealidad torturada que perece progresivamente ante una sociedad hipócrita. Con estas fuerzas en tensión, el escritor construyó un alegato cruel e inclemente de la vida provinciana española, ceñida a sus clases dirigentes, en tiempos de la Restauración finisecular.
La Regenta es, sin duda, la obra maestra de Clarín y una de las novelas más importantes de la literatura española. En ella se retrata en toda su complejidad una ciudad de provincias, en la que está representada la sociedad española de la Restauración. Clarín somete a una irónica crítica a todos los estamentos de la ciudad: la aristocracia decadente, el clero corrupto, las damas hipócritas, los partidos políticos. Todo ello conforma una atmósfera social asfixiante y opresiva, con la que choca la protagonista, Ana Ozores. Su temperamento sensible y soñador la lleva a refugiarse en el misticismo; pero su confesor, el canónigo Fermín de Pas, la decepciona cuando intenta aprovecharse de ella. Cae entonces en brazos de Álvaro Mesía, un mediocre don Juan, con el que vivirá una relación amorosa que no resultará ser más que un sucedáneo de sus ideales románticos. En el enfrentamiento entre Ana y Vetusta, la primera acabará siendo vencida, y, en consecuencia, marginada. La importancia de la presión ambiental y social, sobre la protagonista, acerca la novela a las teorías del naturalismo.

A recent trip to Sydney for World Pride and Mardi Gras gave me the opportunity to head to Carriageworks, where I'd never been before, but knew it was industrial and would be a great opportunity to practice my architectural photography. The venue did not disappoint.
Besides housing the amazing Bloodlines exhibition by the phenomenal The Huxleys, a compact display of the Paul Yore exhibition that I saw in full in Melbourne a few months prior, and keeping a rich history of warehouse grunge with factory parts still contained inside, Carriageworks had also been turned into a queer First Nations meeting and entertainment space as part of World Pride - Marri Madung Butbut, meaning Many Brave Hearts.

Aunque sus orígenes se remontan al siglo X y formó parte del primer recinto amurallado de la ciudad de Toro, su construcción data del siglo XV. Testigo de importantes acontecimientos históricos, el Alcázar de Toro constituye un hito destacado en el conjunto de la ciudad.
Tras la división de León y Castilla a mediados del siglo XII, Toro queda adscrito al reino leonés. En 1199 se casa Alfonso IX con doña Berenguela y éste será el rey que entre 1188 y 1195 inicie la construcción del castillo y de las murallas. Sancho IV donará Toro y su alfoz a su esposa María de Molina en 1283 la cual reconstruirá el antiguo castillo dándole la forma actual. En el S.XV el Alcázar de Toro fue el último baluarte de Juana la Beltraneja en estas tierras. A mediados del siglo XIX el castillo se encontraba destruido en su mayor parte habiendo sido utilizado como almacén de pólvora. Hoy en día alberga la oficina de turismo y posee también una sala doble para albergar exposiciones. Desde sus 180 metros de adarve se pueden contemplar unas maravillosas vistas sobre el río Duero y la ciudad de Toro.

Although its origins date back to the 10th century and were part of the first walled enclosure of the city of Toro, its construction dates back to the fifteenth century. Witnessing important historical events, the Alcázar de Toro is a highlight in the city as a whole.
After the division of León and Castile in the mid-12th century, Toro was attached to the Kingdom of León. In 1199 Alfonso IX married Doña Berenguela and this will be the king who between 1188 and 1195 began the construction of the castle and the walls. Sancho IV will donate Toro and his alfoz to his wife Maria de Molina in 1283 which he will rebuild the old castle giving it the current form. In the S.XV the Alcázar de Toro was the last stronghold of Juana la Beltraneja in these lands. By the mid-19th century the castle was mostly destroyed having been used as a gunpowder warehouse. Today it houses the tourist office and also has a double room to host exhibitions. From its 180 meters of adarve you can enjoy wonderful views over the Douro River and the city of Toro.
El Alcázar (denominado también como Alcázar Real de Toro) es una edificación defensiva de planta cuadrada ubicada en la ciudad de Toro (Zamora). La primitiva construcción data del siglo X, no obstante las numerosas reconstrucciones hacen notar que es una edificación más reciente. Se encuentra cerca de la ribera, ubicado en un alto, posee unas murallas defensivas flanqueadas por siete torreones y formó parte del conjunto de murallas que defendían y abarcaban a la ciudad. El alcázar fue lugar de residencia de los Reyes Católicos.
El alcázar se construye en el siglo X en una acrópolis de la ciudad (elevada a 110 metros del río Duero).
Fue escenario de una de las más crueles matanzas del rey Pedro I de Castilla. El 16 de enero de 1356, se encontraba ahí María de Portugal, esposa del rey Alfonso XI, cuando su hijo Pedro el Cruel llegó y ordenó a sus escuderos que mataran a varios nobles que acompañaban a la reina. Pedro López de Ayala en sus crónicas de los reinados de Pedro, Enrique II, Juan I y de Enrique III, describe los hechos.
Fue residencia de Juan II de Castilla cuando asistía a las Cortes. Es posible que existieran otras residencias reales. El castillo tuvo su protagonismo durante la guerra de Sucesión Castellana y concretamente en la Batalla de Toro acaecida el 1 de marzo de 1476. Tras el abandono que sufrió en el siglo XVI como residencia real, el castillo inició un lento declive. Fue declarado Monumento Histórico Artístico en 1931.
A Western Australian ant we often see running up the trunks of trees. These were on a Marri tree.

A "must go to" place each Spring for the tulips. They have been planted at Araluen since 1930 with bulbs initially imported from Holland and now from the cool climes of Tasmania.
After the call went out on facebook in June this year, 200,000 bulbs were planted by a volunteer workforce.
Araluen, an aboriginal name meaning "running waters", is located in the Darling Ranges, 35km from Perth, Western Australia. The botanic park of 14 hectares is enclosed by a further 59 hectares of native Australian bushland that includes Marri, Eucalypt and Blackbutt trees. As well as the popular tulip displays, the garden features exotic plant species of camellias, tea roses and magnolias.
