Mark Manders: Parallel Occurrences/Documented Assignments, Target Gallery, June 2 - September 11, 2011.

This pictures show Mark, our Aboriginal guide for the Mutawintji Historic site-- he did an EXCELLENT job of teaching us about some of the Aboriginal traditions and history of the area. It wasn't "touristy" or gimmicky in the least, and everyone learned a lot.

Mark told us about the slab of rock in the bottom right. It was removed from its original position in the ground during the 1970s, by some students who were visting the park-- this was before the traditional owners of the park owned and administered the area. The students displaced the slab, and took it down to their campsite, intending to take it home with them. A park ranger, however, noticed the slab was missing, and went to the campsite to see whose trailer seemed a bit... weighed down. And so he discovered the students, and he could have had them arrested, and prosecuted, which would have resulted in large fines and jail terms, most likely. However, instead, he simply forced them to carry it back up the hill, in the midday sun, and had them place it in the position you see now. The ranger thought this would be good for photo opportunities. When the Aboriginal people took over the administration of the park in 1983 they decided to leave it as it is.

How Twain turned to being a writer

FROGS & GOLD MINES

from post: Steve McCurdy‎American History Buffs

In late 1865 Mark Twain was living at the Occidental Hotel in San Francisco (he called the Occidental “heaven on the half shell”) with his buddy Steve Gillis. One night Gillis broke a beer mug over the head of a local tavern owner, who clung to life in a SF hospital. Twain helped bail Gillis out of jail, and they both headed out of town to avoid a potential manslaughter charge against Gillis. They went to Jackass Hill, where Gillis’s brother had a mountain cabin. Jackass Hill was seven miles southeast of Angel’s Camp, in Calaveras County. The idea was to do some gold prospecting in Angel’s Camp until things quieted down in San Francisco.

It turned out that not much prospecting got done because it rained every day in Calaveras County. Sitting in the Angel Hotel one day, Twain met Ben Coon, a river boat captain who was also a renowned story teller. While Twain took notes, Coon told the story of Jim Smiley’s jumping frog “Dan’l Webster,” which could outjump any other frog anywhere. In the remainder of the 88 days he and Gillis spent at Jackass Hill, Twain wrote his tale “The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County,” which ultimately made he, Angel’s Camp, and Calaveras County forever famous.

The experience finally convinced Twain that he was much better suited to writing than he was to prospecting, and it was probably during this same period that he penned his definition of a gold mine. “A gold mine is a big hole in the ground with a liar on top.” Pictured – the former Angel Hotel, Angel’s Camp Welcome sign, and commemorative plaque.

Tonight at the Chester Literature Festival it was a little different because tonight’s event was a Poetry Pub Crawl. I was joined by two stand-up poets – and stand-up guys – Tim Clare and Mark Grist on a tour of some of Chester’s cosiest pubs including the Ship Inn, The Cross Keys, Bear and Billet and finally The Falcon.

My daughter and Mark are to be married next year. As part of the wedding package the photographer took many shots for the album, this summer. These included shots in the garden and the house. I am in the background, very interested in what the photographer was doing. I have never seen portrait photography to this scale before.

Then something totally unexpected happened that was very funny and had every one in fits of laughter. The clever lady captured it all and more ! :)) to be continued.

Golden Monkey and Stephen Hawkins left on a bench in Mark Square EC2. I dropped this and was only just out of the square when 3 people came by and found them. They all looked a little bemused but the young lady popped the golden monkey in her bag before tucking into her sandwich. Not sure what happened to stephen though.
