Basically, the best day of my life. I met all of them, was against the barricade, got Mark's pick. I couldn't be happier.
This is big wave rider Mark Visser with Nick and Jack. He is totally fit and totally disciplined. He rides the 30+ feet waves. His biggest wave to date is over 70 feet.He is also an ex-student of the school I teach at. He came back to talk to the year 3s (I teach one of the year classes) about health and nutrition. While I was photographing Wayne, my Stranger #186, and as his friend was excusing himself and promising I could photograph him another time soon, this man appeared on the coffee shop patio and was obviously a friend of the other two. When I finished photographing Wayne I asked this fellow if he would like to participate in my project and he said “Sure.”
Meet Mark who asked where I wanted to position him and since I didn’t want to repeat the background used with Wayne, I suggested we step over a couple of meters and use the grey stucco wall of the coffee shop. I had a bit of trouble keeping a power cable out of the frame and my initial positioning was just as the sun peeked out and brightly illuminated one of his ears. This is the kind of thing I didn’t notice in the past until I looked at the image on my computer but at this point I can recognize some (but not all) of the problems in time to deal with them. I explained my issue with the bright light and he said “How about if I take a step over here so that telephone pole will cast a bit of shade?” How’s that for cooperative - a Stranger who solves the problems for me!
Mark is (believe it or not) 39 and works as a freelance “grip” in the film industry. He explained that he gets hired to expedite things at film shoots by moving equipment, setting up lights, handling diffusers, and generally doing a wide range of tasks on the set or location. Now things fell into place and I realized why he was so adept at helping me deal with the light issue.
We talked a bit about his work and he said that his job is hard on relationships because of the irregular hours and long shifts punctuated by periods of no work at all. He said he is single but has experienced this problem in relationships and told me that many of his friends in the business are separated or divorced. He clearly loves the work, though, and enjoys being around moviemaking and finds the variety keeps him interested. He was a very nice fellow and was clearly tuned in to photography and what I am doing with my project.

This was my 3rd attempt at his faceup and the one that I stuck with. Scuse the weird photoshop treatment but the background is so bleh that I had to do something about it.
I like the effect though.
