Fireworks from Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego, CA while the Chargers are being introduced before the game vs the 49ers on December 16, 2010. The Chargers won 34 - 7. This picture was taken from Cromwell Court where there used to be a unobstructed view of Qualcomm Stadium from an empty lot; now the area is fenced off. This is the view through the chain link fence using my 35mm prime lens.
Mark is my third and final stranger from the 'How the hell do I deal with all this strong sunlight' series.
Great stranger, poor photograph, made slightly better with a bit of tweaking in PS. (But I've since had some excellent advice on here that should help in the future! :) :)
'Why are you in Newcastle today?' I asked Mark, expecting him to say that he worked here blah blah blah. But oh no. Mark was in Newcastle because...
'I'm buying some leather to make my friend a pouch for his hand fasting ceremony.'
'His what?'
'His hand fasting ceremony. Its a pagan betrothal ceremony/marriage.'...
Poor Mark was then subjected to a bombardment of questions from myself as I was totally and genuinely interested in learning all about pagan weddings.
I now desperately want to go to a hand fasting myself. I want to get dressed up in a Border Reiver outfit, hang out in the woods in a tent, drink mead with blokes in kilts...
What a smashing bloke Mark was - and very tolerant to the ear-bashing of questions he got. Thank you for your time Mark. I hope the pouch turns out well and that you have a fabulous hand fasting celebration in the summer. :)

Tonight at the Chester Literature Festival it was a little different because tonight’s event was a Poetry Pub Crawl. I was joined by two stand-up poets – and stand-up guys – Tim Clare and Mark Grist on a tour of some of Chester’s cosiest pubs including the Ship Inn, The Cross Keys, Bear and Billet and finally The Falcon.

This pictures show Mark, our Aboriginal guide for the Mutawintji Historic site-- he did an EXCELLENT job of teaching us about some of the Aboriginal traditions and history of the area. It wasn't "touristy" or gimmicky in the least, and everyone learned a lot.
Mark told us about the slab of rock in the bottom right. It was removed from its original position in the ground during the 1970s, by some students who were visting the park-- this was before the traditional owners of the park owned and administered the area. The students displaced the slab, and took it down to their campsite, intending to take it home with them. A park ranger, however, noticed the slab was missing, and went to the campsite to see whose trailer seemed a bit... weighed down. And so he discovered the students, and he could have had them arrested, and prosecuted, which would have resulted in large fines and jail terms, most likely. However, instead, he simply forced them to carry it back up the hill, in the midday sun, and had them place it in the position you see now. The ranger thought this would be good for photo opportunities. When the Aboriginal people took over the administration of the park in 1983 they decided to leave it as it is.
The high quailty images that were taken during our tests could show the slightest mark.
The medical test photographs were taken a few days after my leg had been caned by our class teacher.
The photograph was eventually sent to the headmaster.

At the National Children's Home during my stay, I was one of the children that was part of the growth study tests that were made over several years on children that were living at the Home.

Professor James Mourilyan Tanner: 1920-2010
A tribute based on a eulogy written and read by Professor Noel Cameron from Loughborough University at his funeral at Exeter Crematorium on August 23rd, 2010, with some extracts from the funeral service conducted by Alison Orchard from the British Humanist Association:
He was born in Camberley Surry to a military family on 1st August 1920, educated at Wellington School, and by the early years of the War he was studying medicine at St Mary’s in London. There was a scheme to send senior medical students abroad to finish their medical training away from the rigours of wartime London, and Jim was sent to the University of Pennsylvania in.
By 1948 he was a lecturer in Physiology at the Sherrington School and following a presentation on his travels to the Royal Society, and a fortuitous meeting with a Dr. Bransby who was in the audience and had spent the war years using a National Children’s home in Harpenden to develop appropriate rationing levels for children, Jim’s Harpenden Longitudinal Growth Study started in 1949 and was to continue for the next 25 years.
The Harpenden study became the core research project of Jim’s career, it formed the dataset on which many of his most significant contributions were based and continues to be a model for those wishing to develop a longitudinal study of human growth and development.
During an academic and research career covering 7 decades and over 300 publications Jim became recognised as the world’s foremost authority on human growth and development or “auxology” as he coined the term for the study of human growth.
