I managed to sneak in a visit to Hardwick Hall before it was forced to close for the November lockdown. Wednesday 4th November 2020. It’s one of the grandest and most important Elizabethan country houses and it’s actually changed very little since that period.

Hardwick Hall was built between 1590 and 1597 (while the adjacent Hardwick Old Hall was still being constructed!) for Bess of Hardwick, and was designed by the architect Robert Smythson. Bess was born in 1527 and through a series of well-made marriages, she rose to the highest levels of English nobility and became enormously wealthy. She was a shrewd business woman, increasing her assets with business interests including mines and glass-making workshops. Already owning Chatsworth House, Bess of Hardwick was the richest woman in England after Queen Elizabeth I and she wanted a grander house to reflect that (it contains one of the largest long galleries in any English house - pictures of that to follow!). The house was very modern for its time and contained a lot of glass windows in a period when glass was seen as something of a luxury.

After Bess's death in 1608, the house passed to her son William Cavendish, 1st Earl of Devonshire, and subsequent Dukes preferred Chatsworth over Hardwick. As a secondary home, Hardwick escaped the attention of modernisers and thankfully received few alterations after its completion. In 1950, the unexpected death of the 10th Duke of Devonshire, with the subsequent death duties (rated at 80%), caused the sale of many of the Devonshire assets and estates. Hardwick was handed over to HM Treasury in lieu of Estate Duty in 1956 and the estate was transferred to the National Trust in 1959.

In recent years Hardwick Hall was used to film the exterior scenes and interior scenes of Malfoy Manor in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows!

Managed a good 10k walk with three friends last night, we were very conscious of the need for distancing but the fresh air plus conversation and camaraderie was a tonic for us all.

Thinking out chain tube stategy is a very worthwhile effort. In this case, both tubes are held with tube clamps. A bracket form the idler axle makes sure the tube does not interfere with the chains path anywhere, regardless of what chainring you are in.

Managed to get the scarf on. Still haven't got into the jacket. Eventually, we will leave the house. Really!

Still managed to don a tshirt and enjoy lunch alfresco. Im writing this review from the recently completed balcony of the Young Vic bar and restaurant.

Sampled the food at The Cut restaurant. Food rating was between a 6 and 7 out of 10.

The sausage and mash lacked any real substance. The bangers had a good texture, bordering on the lumpy (hopefully hand-made) side. The mash was average, and the gravy was sweet but lacked body or any other distinguishing flavour.

The BLT we ordered was in trouble to start as we asked for a veggie version, but the lack of substitutes was a shame, and the bread itself looked like packet sliced loaf, albeit the posh kind.

All in all the day time ambience here is quite good, but the food and service needs to step up a little if it wants to become a frequent place to visit thats worth the price tag. I will give it another go, so hoping for better things next time.

Managing Water and Land Resources for Sustainable Livelihoods at the Interface between Fresh and Saline Water Environments in Vietnam and Bangladesh

The project had five specific objectives:

1.To enhance their understanding of livelihood changes resulting from regional resources management and farm-level technological interventions.

2.

To assess the impacts of agricultural and aquacultural land and water uses on water quality, aquatic biodiversity, and inland fisheries.

3.

To develop ecologically friendly and socially acceptable techniques for rice and rice-aquaculture production systems.

4.

To develop decision-support tools and an institutional framework for integrated multipurpose management of a dual fresh- and brackish-water regime to meet the needs of diverse water users, without an adverse impact on users and the environment outside.

5.

To enhance human resources capacity and develop recommendations for resources management at the farm and regional level.

Thanks to all the writers!

After a disastrous last weekend trying to bench this spot and being chased away by like 800 bikers, I went back this weekend and managed to be out here for a little over 5 hours without issue. 11:30 AM - 5 PM.

Not to say that there wasn't some sketchiness going on, but when you're out for hours your bound to see some shit going down. It's usually just homeless shenanigans, but I leave them alone and they leave me alone. Everyone just kinda' gets along and minds their own business. Just how I like it.

Spotted some AMAZING pieces today. Some of my favorite writers doing their best work, and not so best work, but seeing their work makes going out there worth it to me.

The added benefit: I got out of the house for a few hours, didn't think about work, life, the f-ing Covid, or anything else besides spotting some great pieces and getting the best shots of those pieces I could. Good times.

700+ shots this session, culled down to a little under 600. A lot of shots, yeah. But, every time I take a shot I'm documenting something that might get buffed next week and it will be gone forever. Documenting art that could vanish in a week, a month, a year.. Who knows. Either way, I've captured it, and will share it for as long as I can.

All in all, it was a good day.

Managed to slip away early this evening to see the Queen Elizabeth sail on her maiden voyage.

I've never seen the Victoria Road car park full before.

There was a huge crowd on Weston Shore.

I walked out onto Woolston Jetty with about half a dozen hardier folks. The wind was freezing down on the water. We were surpirsed you are actually allowed to walk to the end of the jetty without security guards ejecting you.

Within minutes of arriving I realised I should have gone to Hythe. The ship was the other side of the pier and the sun was setting so I was shooting into it. Also she was escorted by one of the Red Funnel ferries which got in the way.

Mind you I could also see that Hythe Marina was full to bursting and likely to sink under the weight of the crowd.

It too 45 mins to get out of Woolston afterwards because of the unusually busy traffic.
