The deposition of sand at Sand Ridge State Forest was followed by a long, dry period when this portion of Illinois looked more like Wyoming or eastern Colorado, but that had long since passed by the time American settlers got here. Forest had firmly established itself on the hundred-foot-tall sand dunes and was just waiting for Illinois farmers to come cut it all down. But this was never one of the state's more productive corners, so in 1939 the state decided to take it over and try an experiment. They'd had a lot of success with the white pine plantations they'd built in places like Lowden State Forest, so they tried that here. The pines are more patchy here than they are in Lowden, but you can still find them in small clusters.

Managed to get one working 8746 from a load of various bits I have collected over the years.
This is an unusual setup as I have used a PCB from 1972 (I had to resolder a defective hookswitch) but with modern 4000R bell coils (so this rings well on modern wiring systems).
The microphone insert is also a "modern" 21a type (condenser mic) rather than the noisy carbon types that were still around in the early 1990s!
It works well although I can only dial out by connecting it to my Nokia 22 GSM fixed terminal adapter,as my landline no longer works with loop disconnect dialling (it is one of the newer LLU circuits provided at the VDSL cabinet rather than the Telephone Exchange)

Abbotsbury Swannery is the world’s only managed colony of nesting mute swans. It is the only place in the world where you are able to walk through the heart of a colony of nesting Mute Swans. The colony, situated on Fleet Lagoon, Dorset, can number over 600 swans with around 150 pairs. Written records of the swannery’s existence go back to 1393 but it probably existed well before that.
However, many migratory swans turn up here every year, too. You can tell the birds that are immigrants because they are wearing coloured leg bands rather than the white ones worn by the Abbotsbury natives. It's taken me over 10 years to get my act together to visit but the first batch of eggs are due to hatch on 3 May so I know it won't be very long before I return. abbotsbury-tourism.co.uk/swannery/

It is Japan's oldest and most famous zoo, opened on March 20, 1882. It is a five-minute walk from the Park Exit of Ueno Station, with convenient access from Tokyo's public-transportation network. The Ueno Zoo Monorail, the first monorail in the country, connects the eastern and western parts of the grounds.
The zoo is located within Ueno Park, a large urban park that is home to several museums, a small amusement park, and other attractions.
As of March, 2003, the zoo has 422 species. The Sumatran tiger, and western lowland gorilla head the list of the zoo's population. Ueno has most variety of species on exhibition than any other zoo in Japan.
At some point, redistribution of the animals among Tokyo's other zoos (including Tama Zoo and Inokashira Nature Park) left Ueno without a lion. However, in response to public demand, Ueno borrowed a female from the Yokohama Municipal Zoo
As of 2008, recent animals at the Ueno Zoo included:
Giant panda (Ling Ling, Ueno's only giant panda, died of chronic heart failure on April 30, 2008, leaving Ueno Zoo without a panda for the first time since 1972.)[1] China has agreed to lend a male and female to Ueno[2].

The elephant sanctuary is located near Lanchang (there is a small road heading north, just before a BP station), then left at the next intersection. From this point on just head due north and there are enough signposts to guide you. It's in the center of Peninsular Malaysia. About 150 km or no more than 2 hours drive from Kuala Lumpur.
The sanctuary is managed by the Malaysian Department of Wildlife and National Parks. This centre was established in 1989. It offers visitors a hands-on introduction to the largest mammal on earth. Worker elephants are trained to help "guide and mother' others during the relocation process to National Park wildlife sanctuaries. Visitors are invited to help bath them in the shallow river or ride them. The juniors have sense of humour, so watch out for a dunking as you try to clamber up their backs!
A base for the Elephant Relocation Team which started in 1974. Being the only centre in Malaysia, the team is dedicated to locating, subduing, translucent problem elephants from areas where their habitats are constantly being encroached by plantations, to Malaysia's National Parks such as Taman Negara. Over the past 25 years the team has successfully relocated around 400 elephants to national parks, bringing the wild elephant population in Malaysia from an alarming low of 500 to about 1200 (2003).
The primary role of the 'Translocation Team' at the centre, is to capture wild elephants that are encroaching on plantations or population centres and to relocate them to national parks.
When a wild elephant is found to be encroaching on farms or population centers, the Elephant Translocation Team is called out. Their first task is to track the wild elephant and tranquilize it, a job that can take days or even weeks. Once the elephant is tranquilized, the next challenge is to move a huge, groggy and generally uncooperative animal out of the jungle and onto a waiting truck. This is when the team relies on their two 50-year-old translocation elephants, Chek Mek and Mek Bunga, to lead the wild elephant out.
Mentompian, a 26-year-old female from Burma, and Abot, a teenage female from Johor, are both being trained to replace the 2 aging elephants.
Without the help of translocation elephants, it would be impossible to get the wild elephant out of the jungle. The two elephants position themselves on either side of the captured elephant while the team attaches chains around its shoulders. Chek Mek and Mek Bunga then slowly and safely move the captured elephant out of the jungle and onto a waiting truck. The captured elephant is taken by road, and then often by barge, to one of a number of protected natural areas where it is set free.

Managed by UPM-Blandin, this is a relatively old aspen-spruce stand managed under their mixedwoods silviculture system. This stand contains spruce, fir, and trembling aspen that are all nearing maturity, in a mix that resembles the normal composition of the native plant community in this area. It's a great example of productivity-oriented management designed to emulate the native plant community.

Facebook and Google have permanently altered the way consumers behave, think about it: when you go to buy something, you know where to go to get it don't you?
Almost nobody makes a financial decision without Googling it first. And if one of your FB friends said "X company did a real good job at my house", the likely hood of your calling company X skyrockets (depending on how close you are and what you think of the person (FB friend) making the recommendation.
