A zoetrope is a device that produces an illusion of action from a rapid succession of static pictures.

..........It consists of a cylinder with images from a set of sequenced drawings.

.....As the cylinder spins the user looks and sees a rapid succession of images producing an illusion of motion.

..........The earliest projected moving images were displayed by using a 'magic lantern' zoetrope.

.....It was this principle of the ' Persistence of vision ' that was the forerunner to the earliest Television pictures.

The great thing about the Rokinon 12mm T3.1 Fisheye is that it gives me the same basic field of view as my previous favorite car rig setup (7D II + Rokinon 8mm Fisheye) except that it's compatible with full frame sensors, allowing for use of my 5D Mark III.

A colorful shot I snapped of Messier 20 - The Trifid Nebula yesterday morning at Frosty Drew Observatory in Charlestown, Rhode Island, USA. The Trifid Nebula is a star forming region visibly featuring an emissions nebula (red), reflection nebula (blue), and a dark nebula. The Trifid Nebula is found in the constellation Sagittarius towards the central bulge of the Milky Way's galactic core, and resides at 5,200 light years distant.

Hi everyone. Posting an image after a long hiatus. We are on a Scandinavia trip and I wanted to share something and hope to share more after I am back home. We almost never saw the sun in our entire 4 days in Norway and I have a feeling a lot of the images will be black and white! This is Nigardsbrevatnet, the body of water just created from the Nigardsbreen glacier, an arm of the Jostedalsbreen glacier, the largest one in continental Europe. It's an HDR composite of 4 handheld exposures, finished in Silver Efex Pro and Lightroom. Would love to hear your comments.

I couldn’t upload a new picture of NYC without updating all the faithful followers of my work. As photographers, we all go through different seasons of our life for shooting and producing new work. As much as it kills me, the last half a year or so has not been great for producing new content. The artist inside of me is dying to create new work, but I have spent the last couple months getting my affairs in order and more importantly, relocating to New York City after graduating from Oklahoma State University. I have tons of exciting things going on, but a lot of them will not be visible to my followers for the time being. Here’s the run down:

I am interning/assisting photographer Daniel Castro twice a week and plan to stay with him for quite some time. He’s a great photographer, retoucher, and I am learning tons from him each and every day.

I am the lead retoucher for a product studio in Long Island City where I spend my days retouching products ranging from purses to sunglasses and everything in between. I also shoot products/models for them on occasion as well.

In my “spare” time, I do freelance retouch for other photographers.

There were a few people who were surprised that I would take the time to intern given that I already have a fairly extensive portfolio from my 52-week and 365 projects. I will tell you that as confident as I was in my photographic and retouching abilities before coming to NYC, I have learned as much as I did in my two yearly projects in only 10 weeks here. Nothing beats hands on experience and I’ve already had plenty since arriving. I’m excited about the future and excited to start shooting my own work in the very near future. I can’t wait to share it all with you. I feel like my career has finally begun.

A star trail is a type of photograph that utilizes long-exposure times to capture the apparent motion of stars in the night sky due to the rotation of the Earth. A star trail photograph shows individual stars as streaks across the image, with longer exposures resulting in longer streaks. Typical exposure times for a star trail range from 15 minutes to several hours, requiring a 'bulb' setting on the camera to open the shutter for a longer period than is normal.

A stunning capture of the Messier 5 Globular Cluster I snapped last night (April, 12, 2015) at Frosty Drew Observatory in Charlestown, Rhode Island, USA. Messier 5 is found in the constellation Serpens and is 24,500 light years distant from Earth, is 165 light years in diameter and contains upwards of 500,000 gravitationally bound stars.

This is a glass 3.25 inch slide designed for Magic Lanterns, this slide shows Newcastle upon Tyne incorrectly called Newcastle on Tyne in the title "Newcastle-on-Tyne, from Gateshead" taken in the year 1879 by George Washington Wilson of Aberdeen and then painted by hand. This photo was taken long before the more famous Tyne bridge was built (1925-1928) and the buildings to the extreme right were demolished to make way for it

This time everything went wrong. This was the last of three shots I made, so the camera had been busy for about three hours at that point.

That resulted in a lot of noise and hotpixel. Also, the frame with the properly exposed foreground was unusable due to the fact that it was out of focus.

And to top that: the front lens was covered with a layer of ice when I finished.

I wasn't expecting to get anything usable out of it, but as you can see, I got a surprise. It's not the prettiest, but the trails are good.

Thanks to my friend for inviting me to shoot from this vantage point. I'm so grateful to get an opportunities which I can't rejected. This is obviously my last shots of the day. Consists of 9 automatic bracketing shots using Magic Lantern.

Processed using Photomatix and also Photoshop CC 2014.

Thanks..

I captured this stunning view early on November 7, 2015 of the 15% crescent Moon, Venus, and Mars in a fabulous conjunction over Frosty Drew Observatory in Charlestown, Rhode Island, USA. From sunset on, we were slammed with clouds and fog. Once 4:30 a.m. swung around, the skies cleared showing off the beautiful conjunction.

Early this morning test, heavily foggy morning but as I got the Deardorff set up, the fog diminished in the east just enough to reveal the disc of our Sun.

Deardorff fitted with the brass lantern lens, no aperture info available, but I'm estimating its effectively around f8. I put a #25 red filter over the lens to act as "neutral density" so I could use my hand as a shutter (about 3/4 second exposure). The neg is fairly dense - as it ought to be when exposing for fog luminance values - but made a very nice scan. There was definite vignetting created by the lens (it doesn't fully cover 8X10) but I accentuated the vignette in Lightroom.

A stunning photo I captured of the binary star, Albireo at Frosty Drew Observatory in Charlestown, Rhode Island, USA. Albireo is one of the most viewed binary stars in the sky and it is easy to see why. Residing at 385 light years distant, Albireo is naked eye visible as just one star. Colors represent the temperatures of the stars, with blue being hottest and red being coolest.

Suddenly I heard a siren blowing loud down from me while shooting here. A burglar alarm or what?

Being discovered while exploring abandoned places is not the best thing that can happen to an explorer.

You never know what is going to happen in this case. Being kicked out by the security guards is the least of the problems. More serious would be being robbed of your expensive photographic equipment or even worst, being beaten. I can react of course but consequences could be bad.

For a short while I felt like a prey being chased by the hunter. My hearth was pounding...!

Finally, I could see below, in the far, a bunch of workers wearing white protective helmets walking to the other side of this building. to seat together for lunch.

The siren had just signaled the starting of lunch break ..... !

needless to say that this was the last take of the day!

A W.Butchers Magic Lantern I bought a couple of weeks ago.

This Magic Lantern dates from around 1900 and was made in England. In order to get it looking and working its best once again I installed a new light source inside so now it can run off a modern electricity socket and use a high powered halogen bulb, also I added a rear reflector to boost lighting and I added a slide holder. Then I scrubbed up all of the brass and rubbed off the rust and re painted it.

A quick shot I captured of tonight's 16% waxing crescent Moon over Providence, Rhode Island. Temps are dropping steady into the weekend when subzero temps will set in. We had a quick bout of clearness, so I setup and snapped the shot.

This was a trial of the Focus Stacking in Magic Lantern.

A series of 30 exposures at different focal lengths, it didn't come out perfect, but looking forward to testing it out more later on.
