Sometimes in life, big treasures come in little fury packages. Polly is our 8 year old Tibetan. We bought her for our Son when he was 12.. he's 20 now and hundreds of miles away at University. He misses her everyday. They were inseparable growing up. So each and everyday I send him a photo of his precious friend. This Morning we had a gorgeous walk during a glorious Sunrise and the whitest of frosts. This photo has made him smile this cold January evening as he studies for his next exam X

Don't cry because it is over......smile because it happened.

This image really caught my eye. Magical bokeh leading this faded and dying tulip back to a garden of hope. My creative imagination working overtime. :)

Natural bokeh

The meaning of tulips is generally perfect love

Tulips are by far my most favourite flower.

I am fascinated by their beauty from the moment they start to bloom and open, to way beyond their prime. As these

flowers mature, the colours intensify and they start taking on delightful new formations...

Black and white dew drops in the grass. I couldn't decide if I liked this one or the colour version better. I think I found the B&W to be less distracting.

Black and white stripes make the zebra one of the most recognizable animals in the world.

The plains zebra (Equus quagga, also known as the common zebra or Burchell's zebra, is the most common and geographically widespread species of zebra. There are three species of zebra, inhabiting the grasslands of eastern and southern Africa. The other two species are Grevy’s zebras and Mountain zebras.

It ranges from the south of Ethiopia through East Africa to as far south as Botswana and eastern South Africa. The plains zebra remains common in game reserves, but is threatened by human activities such as hunting for its meat and hide, as well as competition with livestock and encroachment by farming on much of its habitat.

This very handsome Zebra stallion posed very well for it's portrait on a late evening game drive during a Photography Safari in Lake Nakuru National Park, Kenya.

I'm feeling a bit lost these days.... the weather is FREEZING cold (too cold to be outside-the high will not get above zero this weekend), there is very little light and I haven't been able to take pictures outdoors. This is my first winter on Flickr and I'm not sure how I'm going to make it through (may need to take a little hiatus...).

The Crested Francolin (Ortygornis sephaena) is a species of bird in the family Phasianidae.

Crested francolins are fairly common in woodland, wooded savanna, scrublands and thornveld from Ethiopia all the way to the northern regions of southern Africa. These small birds forage for fruits, seeds and insects on the ground. They also nest on the ground, often under a bush. They are monogamous. Their young are precocial, foraging for themselves, although their parents do maintain a vigil for predators.

Crested francolins can be distinguished from other francolin species by the bold white stripe above its eyes, its dark head, and its white throat. When alarmed, their dark crest feathers will stand up, like a mohawk. Probably the most useful distinguishing feature for this species is its habit of cocking its tail to a 45-degree angle above its back as it walks. Kinda like a smaller version of a bantam hen.

This lovely Francolin was captured on a photography safari during an early morning game drive in Nairobi National Park, Kenya.

One of those days when the light, colder temperature and a little mushroom look perfect together.

Soon we are heading for Spring so these pictures will be memories we can look back at.

All natural, straight out of camera effects allow for magical bokeh to accent these tiny floating flowers. View large!

This is a bit of a departure from my usual work, but it has a certain softness that still appeals to me. The secret to the crazy bokeh is one you’ll want to read about in this description as well!

I had a bowl of water set in my studio for a different water droplet refraction experiment, and that went well, but I had more ideas floating around – pun intended. This one involves a few small flowers (unsure the name) floating on the surface of water to achieve an interesting reflection, with a backdrop of brilliant abstract patterns caused by “soap bubble bokeh”.

The lens used here is my Trioplan 100, known for its spectacular bokeh in the right conditions, especially when shooting wide open. At F/2.8 this lets is difficult to use, especially when I stack extension tubes on it to get even closer to my subject. Focus is achieved by moving the camera forward and back, not by adjusting the focus on the lens. This keeps me at my best magnification, and also allows me to hold the camera more steadily for a better chance at getting the right slice of focus.

Because these flowers are freely floating, there is a huge element of randomness and chance. If they rotate slightly, then I need to change my position quickly to compensate or nudge the flowers slightly to be more cooperative. Expect to take MANY images that you’ll eventually throw away in this process.

So, where does that crazy bokeh come from? About an inch behind the flowers I have placed a large chunk of “titanium quartz”, which is basically a quartz crystal cluster that has been coated with titanium oxide. The titanium oxide coating brings about the properties of thin film interference, the same physics that puts colours into snowflakes and soap bubbles. In this scenario, different crystal facets will pick up different colours, and those facets create specular highlights from my flash. Pushed out of focus, we get a colourful array of bokeh to fill in the background.

The optical characteristics that allow for the Trioplan “soap bubble bokeh” combined with a bit of inventive subject matter results in this image. It’s not perfect, but I feel like it was an experiment worth sharing!

The Ngorongoro Conservation Area is a protected area and a World Heritage Site located in the Crater Highlands area of Tanzania. The area is named after Ngorongoro Crater, a large volcanic caldera within the area.

The Ngorongoro Conservation Area has a healthy resident population of most species of wildlife. Common in the area are hartebeest, spotted hyena, and jackals amongst other wildlife.

The annual ungulate migration passes through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, with 1.7 million wildebeest, 260,000 zebra, and 470,000 gazelles moving south into the area in December and moving north in June. This movement changes seasonally with the rains, but the migration traverses almost the entire plains in search of food.

This beautiful Lioness on the hunt, was captured on a late evening game drive on a Photography safari, inside the Ngorongoro Crater, Tanzania.

With a fall chill in the air, the last night of daylight savings time is upon us! For Scoty

Shot at the State Fair of Texas. One of the vendors had these little trees strung with lights...and even a little fence. You just never know when you're going to happen upon something magical.

Happy Fence Friday! Hope you have a wonderful weekend!

Day 124

It seems to be raining bokeh.

Also, shooting and uploading during finals week has proved harder than expected.

This budding foxglove with its forget-me-not bokeh made me think of a magical and pretty beanstalk climbing through the clouds..I wonder what's at the top?!

Taken at a recent trip to Burnham beeches which is an amazing location for macro and fungi at this time of year, very highly recommended!

Happy Macro Monday

My best pal wedding was this weekend, and I was honored to be his best man. This was my first time at an actual "big" wedding, and i am so tired beyond belief. I didn't have a single minute to have time to take pictures, but only at the end when everyone left. I was really moved during the dances, esp there pictures of him growing up in the background. Over all the wedding was a huge success! I am so happy for best pal!

Taking the time to catch up on everyone's stream! have a great week ahead!

Have a wonderful Wednesday my dear friends!!! Cheers!

Taken while I held the cam just an inch above the ground without looking into the viewfinder having been influenced by my Flickr friend tetsu san. I nearly erased it but the bokeh here is not too bad, so here it is. :D
