A little Red Milkweed Beetle looks over the tip of its milkweed leaf.

This beautiful mayfly was spotted today by my son while we were by a stream. After photographing this animal I am happy to report that is was released into the same area we collected it from.

Carabidae

We had several of these black beetles (approx 2.5cm long) scurrying across our holiday cottage floor. This one had been trying to wedge itself behind the kitchen sink all day, so I think I did it a favour by rescuing it! As always a softbox really helps to bring out the detail in black shiny objects. If you know the species, let me know! Canon 5D Mk II, MP-E65mm, ST-E2 transmitter, 430EX, Milk-carton card and silver tape softbox f/16, 1/200 sec, ISO 100, approx 3x magnification
