A noble moth posthumously donated its body for my macro practice.

Two different males on the fence this morning

Today's sun brought out the insects at long last!

Male of Megachile (Chalicodoma) parietina.

Technique: It was a cool day (18C) with partly cloudy skies and intermittent light showers -perfect weather to go looking for solitary bees since they'll have a tough time keeping their metabolism up. I got lucky and found this Mason bee semi-dormant in my Lavender.

Tech Specs: Canon 80D (F11, 1/250, ISO 100) + a Canon MP-E 65mm macro lens (around 3x) + a diffused MT-24EX (both flash heads on the Canon flash mount, E-TTL metering). This is a single, uncropped, frame taken hand held. I used an artificial flower to keep the background from being black.

This is the third of three video clips showing the mantis taking control of a thrashing mealworm. It would take the mantis over 2 hours to devour the entire mealworm, but within 90 seconds (at the end of this clip) the worm was no longer able to offer any meaningful resistance.

I baited this honeybee with a little of her own honey. Tech Specs: Canon 1D Mark III (F16, 1/250, ISO 100) + a Canon EF-S 60mm macro lens + a 12mm extension tube. (~1.4x) + a diffused MT-24EX. This is a single, uncropped, frame taken hand held. I am holding on to the flower stem with my left hand, and I'm resting the lens on that same hand to keep the scene steady. The "blue sky" is a piece of light blue plexiglass with a piece of glossy photo paper behind it (glossy side toward the camera).

Blog post with a video of that background.

There is something I really like in this shot... hope you notice it

This is a group of Large milkweed bugs - Oncopeltus fasciatus. There are adults and nymphs in various stages of developement. It's no surprise that the favorite food of the large milkweed bug is the seeds and tissue of the milkweed plant Asclepias.

Camera: Canon EOS 600D

Lens: Industar 61L/Z

Again from my archives...

I hope soon I'll have time for new photos

It's been nice and warm outside lately (well, relatively warm, since the temperatures have been fluctuating between +3 and -5oC) I have been more and more thinking about spring... I know we have a very long way still before us, but one can always dream, right?! ;D I was going through my pictures and happened upon this set of ladybug ones that I shot back in March.. Cute little things - ladybugs. Always bring in my mind memories of warm days full of sunshine and happiness... Happy Monday guys!

I love ladybird :)

A hoverfly in flight around Salvia flowers. I like how the wing hinges are in focus (which was entirely by chance!).
