I would like to come back to the issue of water – and the shortage of it – at Versailles. Ever since Louis XIV started building water fountains in the gardens of Versailles in the 1640's, until his death in 1715, kingdom engineers have been struggling with the problem of getting enough water to satisfy the increasing demand. All kinds of schemes have been devised as solutions. Some were fairly simple like tapping nearby ponds or digging trenches to create new ponds (the Grand Canal; the Swiss Pool). Others were more ambitious like diverting rivers (the Bièvre; the Eure). But one of the most interesting projects was building this machine called The Marly Machine. This contraption was built along the Seine River, about seven kilometres north of Versailles. It is pictured here in a 1723 painting by Pierre-Denis Martin, which hangs inside the palace. What the machine did – or was supposed to do – was to tap water from the Seine River, lift it some 100 metres above the level of the river and channel it into an aqueduct that would then take it to a reservoir at the Palace. A series of waterwheels was constructed in the river which activated a series of pumps to lift the water. The lifting was done in three stages. It worked, although not as well as it was supposed to. Consequently, full capacity was never achieved and the machine was plagued with frequent breakdowns and all kinds of leaks that prevented it from being a real solution to the water supply problem at Versailles. Remnants of the machine can still be seen along the river.

Coca-Cola has recently introduced a digital vending machine, allowing its thirsty consumers to select and purchase beverages by using an interactive touch screen. A digitalized Coke machine may be found at the UPS Store on campus, in the Oglesby Union.

The ubiquitous: Don't-tip-the-vending-machine-over-on-your-body-or-you-might-die warning.
But here's the good news. This stick figure looks like he or she has superhuman strength: The stick figure's arms are powerful enough to support the weight of the vending machine. I guess the message is eat candy and you, too, can lift a vending machine.
A cigarette vending machine in Japan. Due to the lack of taxes, they cost only about 300 yen per pack. Which amounts to about $4.50 Singapore dollars. No wonder pollution from the smokers in Japan amounts to roughly the same level as their cars. (okay, i made that up..)

...no, this wasn't a gift for Mother's Day. ha ha ha! I picked up some side work last summer and bought it back then with some of the money I earned. Can you believe this Baby Lock enlighten serger has been sitting in it's box since last August?! Anyway...for Mother's Day, I decided to bust this baby open and start using it! I decided to sew up a top for myself using this serger for the Made by Rae Spring Top Sewalong. (See the next picture for the result.) I love this machine! I can't believe it took me this long to start using it. I was a little intimidated to start using the machine since I got the most MINIMAL lesson (if you could even call it a lesson) on how to use the machine months after I purchased it--but that's another story. Isn't it frustrating when there is only one store in your area that sells certain machines and you have to deal with their awful service if you want a machine that only they sell?! Anyways...threading is a BREEZE with this machine! I'm just doing the basics with the machine now, but so far, it is very easy to use and maneuver! I can't wait to play around with it a little more! I was able to piece together the top in the next picture with this machine in no time! :) Happy Mother's Day! :)
