La notte ascolto le macchine
su per la salita e passano le ore.
Non ho altro da offrirmi
che il rumore dei motori
il raschio delle ruote
i tonfi sordi sui tombini.
E vanno, sono sempre andate.
C’erano i camion
dal di dietro largo,
alti, dopo la scuola,
con la nuvola di nafta,
i motocarri sporchi con la legna
i mobili i rottami.
Tutto puzza di olio e di benzina,
di gente che si muove,
di carcasse nei cimiteri
sotto la pioggia, dove l’erba
spunta cieca tra le gomme,
i radiatori, gli avantreni
sfondati, le portiere sghembe,
i fari spalancati.
È inutile pensarci, poi le schiacciano,
ne fanno altre. Ci sono degli oceani
di macchine. Paesaggi colorati.
Arrivano e si fermano,
la notte. Fanno compagnia.
Qualcuno scende e chiude.
Avranno il muso caldo per un pezzo,
nel silenzio. Un’alba le disegna
immobili con i sedili vuoti.

Anamakia (Madagascar) – Quand je vois cette machine à sous, à moins de 200 mètres des limites de la décharge à ciel ouvert, je n’en crois pas mes yeux. A proximité, des dizaines de familles s’intoxiquent en triant des ordure pour gagner misérablement leur vie. Je me dis que le bandit manchot ne doit pas fonctionner. J’arrête mon scooter, je m’approche de ce petit casino local et constate que l’engin fonctionne parfaitement. L’homme introduit des pièces déclenchant un bruit de fête foraine.
Je suis resté une dizaine de minutes et malgré son acharnement à alimenter en pièces la machine, le joueur n’a rien gagné. Étonnant !
Slot Machine
Anamakia (Madagascar) – When I saw this slot machine, less than 200 meters from the open-air landfill, I couldn't believe my eyes. Nearby, dozens of families were poisoning themselves by sorting through garbage to eke out a miserable living. I figured the slot machine must be broken. I stopped my scooter, approached this small local casino, and found that the machine was working perfectly. The man inserts coins, triggering a carnival-like noise.
I stayed for about ten minutes, and despite his efforts to feed the machine coins, the player didn't win a thing. Amazing!

Once brand new coal power for the new Powder River Basin, these green machines were at the end of the line by this late date. Avoiding the scrappers torch and finding a home hauling taconite pellets in Michigan for over 30 years since leaving the coal fields, time is up. Replaced by more modern machines from the same genetic lineage, soon they would fall to the scrappers torch.

GHH mining machine underground shovel, when they were introduced in the Monteponi mine, helped to make the work lighter and faster. He wouldn't mind seeing it displayed in a protected area and not exposed to the elements. A machine created to work indoors that ends its "career" outdoors. The most interesting part are the reinforcements made by hand welding along the entire profile of the blade of the shovel. Although not a certainly functional artistic work; this is proof of the mastery and skills that the staff had acquired in working in a mine like this.
Pala da sottosuolo GHH mining machine, quando vennero introdotte nella miniera di Monteponi aiutarono a rendere il lavoro più leggero e veloce. Non sabbe male vederla esposta in una zona protetta e non esposta alle intemperie. Una macchina che nasce per lavorare al chiuso che finisce al sua "carriera" all'aria aperta. La parte più interessante sono i rinforzi realizzati con saldatura a mano lungo tutto il profilo della lama della pala. Seppure non un lavoro artistico sicuramente funzionale; questo a riprova della maestria e delle competenze che il personale aveva acquisito nel lavorare in una miniera come questa.
