Located 15 miles southwest of the town of Shiprock, New Mexico is a unique towering, bird-like volcanic rock formation that can be seen for miles in all directions. Shiprock, as this mighty sand-colored column was named by Anglo settlers, is known to the Navajo as “Tsé Bit’ a’í”, or rock with wings. The peak is 7,178 above sea level, and is at the center of three volcanic pressure ridges that pushed the rock skyward millennia ago
Located in Plainview, AR the farm is owned by a friend of mine retired from Wal-Mart. The barn was originally built in 1910, but has a more modern roof. Many of the original wood planks still remain.

Currently located just outside the boundaries of Snæfellsjökull National Park, the town of Hellnar is the largest of the fishing villages on the south side of the Snæfellsnes Peninsula in Iceland. It has been that way for centuries. A church was first built at this site in the village in 1833. The church in the photo was constructed in 1945.

Located just one mile inside the Tennessee border with Kentucky within the Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area is the South Bison Range. While it was not possible to get as close at the first location we stopped, this viewing area from the roadway is elevated above the prairie and gives a unique view of the entire herd from a safe viewing spot. Seeing these huge, amazing creatures gives me a new respect for their size and strength...magnificent creatures of God's design!

A sailing catamaran ( lead ) is a multihull vessel that is characterized by having two separate hulls, which are generally similar or identical in size. Because of their dual-hull design, they offer more space and will lay on the water like a raft, for less heeling when enjoying sailing on the open waters. These boats were originally crafted in the South Pacific as a way to navigate the shallow waters with increased stability, for transporting passengers and goods between various islands. They became popular for sailing in the 1960s and 70s and are now one of the most common sailing vessels available.

Located just off the South Rim Trail near Spectra Point. There are a couple of old pines along this section that look like they could tumble into the amphitheater at any time. This particular view is down the Ashdown Creek drainage and into Slip Canyon.

Located in the Four Corners area and stretching from Utah east into Colorado, Hovenweep National Monument is a desert area settled by ancestral Puebloans in about 1200 AD. The ruins include towers, dwellings, and kivas, many of which can be seen today. By 1300 AD it was abandoned, presumably because of drought, with Puebloans migrating to the Rio Grande Valley.
The ruins were first discovered by the leader of a Morman expedition into Utah in 1854. They were named Hovenweep, a Paiute word for "deserted valley," by famed Yellowstone photographer William Henry Jackson in 1874 and became part of the National Park System in 1923. It is remote. No crowds, no nearby cities, no motels, no restaurants, no gas stations. Just desert beauty by day and dark skies at night. And crows. Lots of crows.

Located in Arraial do Cabo (RJ), it is one of the most paradisiacal and sought-after destinations in Brazil, often called the "Brazilian Caribbean" due to its crystal-clear turquoise blue waters.
Located in the altitude fields of the "Serra da Bocaina", the "Casa de Pedra", as it is currently known, was built by Dr. Lassance, a resident doctor from Rio de Janeiro, in the beginning of the 20th century and its apogee in 1914.
Once ready and decorated with the richest imported refinements, the house was not much to the liking of his wife who was not interested in the patrimony.
The abandonment and vandalism were destroying the beautiful building that is now in ruins, and today is only a reminder of the golden days of "Bocaina".

Located on the Mall near the Lincoln Memorial. Inscribed on the base are the names of the 499 District of Columbia citizens who lost their lives in World War I.
Badami town is located at the foot of a red sandstone inselberg.
Badami Cave Temples were dug horizontally into the cliff of the inselberg during the Chalukya period. There are four cave temples open to the public, three Hindu temples and one Jain one. They can be reached by climbing stone stairways as you see in the photo. The entrances of Cave 1 and 2 are in the frame.
A tree was found growing by cracking the rock.
Chalukya Dynasty was founded in 540 CE and prospered until 753 CE. Its first capital was Aihole and moved to Badami in 543. It had controlled present-day Karnataka, Maharashtra as well as part of Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu at its height. Badami had continued to be the capital of the Chalukyas.
The area around Badami is known to be the cradle of the Dravidian architecture where the distinct style of Hindu temples in South India developed.
Located in Lancaster, Virginia, this has been a stone ground mill site since 1666. This current mill was built in 1843 and stands 65’ high. It was last in operation from 1843-1872. It is the only remaining flour mill of the 15 once operating in Lancaster County, VA. It has 32 windows and 5 doors and an attached building.

The Crystal Mill, or the Old Mill is an 1892 wooden powerhouse located on an outcrop above the Crystal River in Crystal, Colorado, Crystal was a big town in late 18th. Then, it became a ghost town in early 19th. Since the road to there is not well maintained, this place can only be accessed via 4x4.
Knowing it would be snow at night, my friend and I decided to do backpack camping there. We packed our stuff and hit on the road around 2 pm in afternoon. After a half mile uphill hiking, we came to an intersection. I wasn't sure which direction to go so I asked a guy who drove a pickup truck. I guess that person didn't hear me clearly, he pointed us to a wrong direction. After one mile hiking uphill, we felt it was wrong because we didn't see any other hikers or vehicles. So, we came down to the intersection and tried the different direction.
On that road we met some other hikers and local tour vehicles. We knew we were on the right path so we kept going. Since we took a wrong road at the beginning and we wasted more than 1 hour and a lot of energy. By 5 pm we were still on the road without knowing how far away we were from our destination. Suddenly, I heart a sound of motor and a tour vehicle stopped beside me. The lady who drove the car told me that they heart our story about taking a wrong way and they were worry about us because it was pretty late. She said she dropped her customer in her place and came back for us. She asked us to get on her car and drove us to Crystal Mill. Since she helped us to get there sooner, we had enough time to look around the place and setup tent.
Next morning, when we got up we were very excited as we had snow and whole place just for two of us. We climbed up and down, went front and back to take Crystal Mill pictures from different angles. After 2 hours of shooting, we packed our stuff and started to walk back. About a half mile of our walk, a person drove a truck came to us. He is a resident in Crystal town and he came to check on us to make sure we were OK during the snow. After a while, another person from Marble side came to us too. He said they were worry about two of us whole night and he came to take us back. Since we want to shoot more snow pictures on the way back, we thanked his kindly offers and walked all the way back to our car.
Now, every time when I looked at my Crystal Mill pictures, I remember those people's warm smiles. Many thanks to the people from Marble and Crystal.
Located east of the town of Westport, population 1300. Built in 1880, this bridge crosses Sand Creek. Burr Arch truss design with a span of 111 feet. In 2004 the bridge was restored. It's rural setting adds a lot of charm and frustration when driving to this site. Many rural roads come to a Tee stop, with no arrow showing which way to turn. I did a lot of turning around even though this was not my first visit...just took a different route.
Whytecliff Park is located in a beautiful corner of Howe Sound with a rugged coastline and spectacular views of colourful mountains and passing boats.
A rather precarious climb to the heights of this rock cliff. Careful footing was an absolute must.

Whytecliff Park is located near West Vancouver's Horseshoe Bay Neighbourhood, the original name of which was White Cliff City, which opened in 1909. In 1914, Colonel Albert Whyte pressed for the spelling change from White Cliff City to Whytecliff. The Whytecliff area is now distinct from Horseshoe Bay. The park, originally Rockcliffe Park, was developed by W.W. Boultbee in 1926, and a private access road was cut from the Marine Drive highway at Batchelor Bay.
The fifty acre Boultbee estate was purchased by the Union Steamship Company in 1939 and the company operated a Bowen Island Ferry from Whytecliff during 1939-41 and 1946-1952
The park is currently home to more than 200 marine animal species and is the first Marine Protected Area in Canada. Sea lions can be seen sunbathing on the beach during summer.

Located on Alter Rd and Kercheval on Detroit's Lower East Side bordering the Grosse Pointe suburbs. I've Googled this building, but I've yet to find the name. One thing that had thrilled me for many moons is this doorway on the side of the building. Whether of Middle Eastern origin, or South Asian, I don't know, but despite the urban blight surrounding it while bordering the suburbs, its beauty had held together over the years.
Located in the Killarney National Park, this beautiful sixty-five rooms Tudor-style mansion stands on an 11,000-acre estate next to the Muckross Lake. It was designed by the British architect, William Burn, and built in 1843. In 1932, it was given to the Republic of Ireland and formed the basis of present-day Killarney National Park. Today we arrive to the Landze church which is located in rural country side on the bank of river Venta. It's open several times a year and Christmas is one of them
The more than 300-year-old Landze Lutheran Church is located near Piltene, in a very picturesque place on the banks of the Venta. The landscape around the church is complemented by a grove of old lindens (there are 7 large lindens here, the circumference of the thickest tree is 6.4 m - it was a beehive tree, the trunk has large knots). An alley leads to the Landze church from the rectory (former boarding house building), where a pear tree with a circumference of 2 m also grows.
The Baltic German poet and translator Kārlis Hugenberger (1784 – 1860) spent his childhood in the Landze rectory. There are ancient burials near the church. Former parish priest of Landze, theologian and historian Teodors Kallmejers (1809 – 1859) is buried here. To the southeast of the church is an ancient cemetery.
Landze is believed to be one of two churches that were built as part of a treaty concluded in 1252 between the Bishopric of Courland and the Livonian Order on its Vinda (Ventava) lands. It existed already in Catholic times, since Jakob Polen founded a vicaria in it in 1518 in honor of the Virgin Mary. The gift was approved by the Master of the Order Walter von Plettenberg. But by the time Gotthard Kettler came to power, it had already collapsed, because by order of February 28, 1567, he ordered the construction of a church in Landze as well.
Probably built a wooden church in 1609 it was still in relatively good condition, only, presumably, initially it was without a tower, since in 1678 the bells hung, as is understood from the descriptions, in a separately standing tower.
In 1700, a tower was built and in 1703 the bells found their place in the tower that stood in the churchyard. The documents of 1712 say that the church is quite new, she has a tiled roof, a red-painted tower strewn with tin, holding two metal bells. The church has new benches, an altar and a chair. This tower threatens to invade as early as 1737. In 1744, by order of the duke, a significant redevelopment is carried out. The tower is demolished and built from the very foundation. It was originally made of wood, in 1776 Christopher Dittrich, Georg von Medem, the renter of the Zūras, orders the construction of a new one from stones. The final restoration work was carried out by Gustav von Lambsdorf, Count of Zūras, in 1847–1848 and finally in 1878 and 1909.
The pastoral lodge is believed to have been founded by Duke Gotthard and suffered greatly from the leaching of the Venta coast. The pastorate's lands were declining until finally 19.gs. in the first half, Count von Lambsdorf, the owner of the Zurs, allocates significant areas of land and restored the pastoral mansion to its former extent. Venta leachates in the 18th century. The pastorate, who was then south of the church, was also threatened, as in 1788 the pastorate had to be relocated and installed north of the church.

This home, located on the corner of North Main Street and Clinton Street, is a fine example of the Queen Anne style of architecture. It was built in 1881 for the William Kellogg family, and was designed by Archimedes Russell, a well-known architect from Syracuse. His fondness for the sunflower symbol, typical of the 1880′s, is prominently featured on the gables of the house, the side entry door, the main staircase, and even the weathervane. Many original features still exist, including beautiful stained glass windows, parquet floors, fantastic woodwork, five working fireplaces, and two indoor “inhouses” (as opposed to “outhouses”)

Located in the Urubamba Valley, aka the Sacred Valley, most archeologists now believe that Machu Picchu was the private estate of the 9th Inca emperor Pachacuti or Pachacútec. Once the Inca emerged from their ancestral lands around the border area of modern Peru and Bolivia, and began to conquer vast tracts of land, they established their capital at the site of modern day Cusco, Peru around 1420. Just like all roads led to Rome in the Roman Empire, thousand of miles of roads and trails led to Cusco in the Inca Empire. Neither Machu Picchu nor Cusco were ever completed due to the Spanish conquest that began with a military campaign by Francisco Pizarro in 1532. It took 40 years to finally vanquish the Inca. Pizarro was only successful due to a civil war caused by the sons of Pachacútec. He was able to recruit the emperor's rival brother to his side. Machu Picchu was used as a stronghold by the Inca for many years but was eventually abandoned. Terraces below the main level were used to grow food especially maize which was used to make a fermented drink used in festivities and rituals. (There's little doubt that the beverage was called 'Hazy Maizy.")

Whytecliff Park is located in a beautiful corner of Howe Sound with a rugged coastline and spectacular views of colourful mountains and passing boats.
Precarious stepping stones lead the brave out to explore the little stone island. It's so important to keep an eye on the tide, as many people have been stranded out on the Islet. When the tide rolls back in, the water level rises and the stone path leading out becomes submerged under the ocean.

A variety of trees and other plants grow out of the rocky surface.
