FALL RIVER, MA — In a major — and unexpected — victory for the climate movement, the criminal charges against two men who used a lobster boat to block a massive coal shipment were dropped this morning.
In May 2013, Ken Ward and Jay O’Hara used a little white lobster boat, the Henry David T, to block a shipment of 40,000 tons of coal to the Brayton Point Power Station in Somerset, MA, the largest coal plant in New England. They were charged with conspiracy, disturbing the peace and motor vessel violations and faced up to several years in jail.
The Bristol County District Attorney, Sam Sutter, dropped the conspiracy charges and reduced the other charges to civil infractions this morning, saying that he saw the need to take leadership on climate change. He called climate change “one of the gravest crises our planet has ever faced” and told a cheering crowd that he would join them at the People’s Climate March in New York City in two weeks.

Spiny lobsters, also known as rock lobsters are a family (Palinuridae) of about 45 species of achelate crustaceans, in the Decapoda Reptantia. Spiny lobsters are also called crayfish, sea crayfish or crawfish.
Although they superficially resemble true lobsters in terms of overall shape, and having a hard carapace and exoskeleton, the two groups are not closely related. Spiny lobsters can be easily distinguished from true lobsters by their very long, thick, spiny antennae, and by their complete lack of claws (chelae); true lobsters have much smaller antennae and claws on the first three pairs of legs, with the first being particularly enlarged. Like true lobsters, however, spiny lobsters are edible and are an economically significant food source; they are the biggest food export of the Bahamas .
Spiny lobsters are found in almost all warm seas, including the Caribbean and the Mediterranean Sea, but are particularly common in Australasia, where they are referred to commonly as crayfish or sea crayfish (Jasus novaehollandiae and Jasus edwardsii), and South Africa (Jasus lalandii). A new species, Palinurus barbarae was described in 2006.
The largest spiny lobster on record was over 1 m (3 ft) long and weighed over 11.8 kg (26 lb).
Spiny lobsters tend to live in crevices of rocks and coral reefs, only occasionally venturing out at night to seek snails, clams, crabs, sea urchins or carrion to eat. Sometimes, they migrate en masse, in long files of lobsters across the sea floor. Potential predators may be deterred from eating spiny lobsters by a loud screech made by the antennae of the spiny lobsters rubbing against a smooth part of the exoskeleton . Spiny lobsters usually exhibit social habit by being together. However recent studies indicate that healthy lobsters move away from infected ones and leaving the diseased lobsters to fend for itself .
The furry lobsters (e.g. Palinurellus) are sometimes separated into a family of their own, the Synaxidae, but are usually considered members of the Palinuridae. The slipper lobsters (Scyllaridae) are their next closest relatives, and these two or three families make up the Achelata. Genera of spiny lobsters include Palinurus and a number of anagrams thereof: Panulirus, Linuparus, etc. (Palinurus was also a helmsman in Virgil's Æneid.)
I am getting used to having lobsters instead of BBQ. Here's a tip if you want to have a lobster bake at your house: Double bag everything in heavy-duty garbage bags.
Two live giant Maine lobsters (Homarus americanus) prior to being prepared as 5 separate courses by a Chinese restaurant (Omei) in Richmond Hill, Canada. The lobsters weighed a collective 18 pounds with a menu price of $19.95 Canadian per pound.
The 5 courses were:
- Steamed with green onions and garlic (my favorite)
- Stir Fried with Maggie Sauce
- Deep Fried
- Fried Rice with Brain/Tomalley
- Steamed Egg Custard with Brain/Tomalley

Authentic Freakshow, I think
her anomaly - her lobster claw-like
right hand - is more clear
in this one than my other.
This ensemble
came to Hollywood
last week. Here she is
performing onstage at
Safari Sam's great club on
Sunset Boulevard.
Though "freak shows" have
disappeared mostly from our
stages and our culture, this
one brings back this sideshow
carney tradition, but with respect
for these folks - aristocrats,
as Diane Arbus put it - who would
rather share and celebrate
the odd anomanies of their
being that God gave them
than be shunned.
So here she is
dancing, singing,
waving with her claw,
joking around,
and rejoicing.
More on Lobster Girl
and the others from
999 Eyes at their website,
where this about her is
written:
When the Lobster Girl emerged from the ocean on the shores of Xenia, Texas in 2004, she was greeted by the carnival's other two founders, Samantha X and D.M. Blackthorn. It was not long before history was made. Lobster Girl was the first bona-fide freak to join the show, thereby laying the basis of the freakshow revival.
—Her fabulous hand missing three middle sets of metacarpals and phalanges resembles that of the Lobster People of old. Her magical storytelling abilities bring to life the history of her freakshow predecessors and the voices of the deep. She is assistant curator for the 999 EYES Museum ov Mutantstrosities, as well as an inside talker for the oddities museum.

There were more lobster bouys in Maine than people, it seemed. I was able to catch a couple of the lobstermen in action.

Lobster with Tamarind Sauce!
We tried this dish numerous times in Vietnam when the king prawns are abundantly available in the monsoon season. Here we use the lobsters instead. The lobster is steamed then topped with tamarind sauce. The intense flavor will surely has your taste buds run wild. Yummy!!!
