Cheesy. I don't remember ever talking to him, such was the massive social & cultural gap between the headmaster and LMS boys in late 1960s & early 1970s. He wrote the LMS school song, apparently.
Believe it or not, this less-than-attractive train is the same articulated railcar that I have shown before. After the war it underwent a major rebuild to become an overhead line maintenance train. It lost the centre coach while the remaining two cars were converted, one into a mobile workshop and the other into mess facilities for the crew.

1960/08.R432c RD4312. Following the closure of the branch line from Watford to Rickmansworth Church Street, the trackbed was turned into a foot and cycle path called the Ebury Way.
The branch line had been crossed by two bridges leading to a farm, and one of these was demolished when the railway was lifted. (See the previous pictures.) However, rather than demolish the second bridge, they buried it!
This picture, taken from the bridge prior to the removal of the sides, was taken by Lynda Bullock in April or May, 1990.
The Ebury Way foot / cycle path rises and makes a diversion at this point as the original route of the trackbed is no longer passable.
Lynda has kindly sent me the picture for inclusion here; more of her splendid pictures can be seen on her Flickr site : www.flickr-.com/photos/just1snap/

A uniform button of the London, Midland & Scottish Railway Company.
The LMS was formed in 1923 by the merging of the London & North Western Railway, Midland Railway, Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway, the Caledonian Railway and several other smaller Scottish companies and numerous other minor companies. In 1948, under the Transport Act of 1947, it was nationalised with the other private operators to become part of British Railways.

The intriguing remnant of a sign pointing to the 'LMS Halt ' at Balnaguard. The remaining portion is surprisingly legible.
