where san francisco county jail was a gluttony of paper, santa clara county jail's medium security dorms had almost no paper or writing utensils for inmates. you got one 3-inch long pencil every week and paper has to be bought from 'commissary'.

l had no money the entire time l was in jail. since there was little paper to be had, l erased and rewrote on this page many times during April and May organizing my thoughts.

Challenge was "pin up" and "teddy bear".

This is the inside of the card I made for David. All "coupons" are redeemable for up to a year, though I don't think David will wait that long :)

I thought it was time I started a family

This design comes from a wall rug in my parents house that my mother made in the 70s. I've obviously seen it for many years, but now that I've got my Zentangle eyes tuned in, it screamed Zentangle to me. It's lovely to be able to reinvent this design and I feel like I could do a few more versions of it because the spaces are so interesting.

MILANO CENTRALE

I didn't draw the ridiculous ubiquitous screens

That just add noise and confusion to the chaos

I omitted drawing the non-existent waiting room

And the passengers standing around blocking the hall

As they stare at the misplaced departure boards

Nor the important impossibly-hard-to find toilets

And of course the missed connections are missing

As are all the numerous unexplained delays

Instead I focussed on the bold curved lines of the roof

I drew the striking structure's vastness and loftiness

I hinted at a platform and the carriage of a waiting train

MILANO CENTRALE

"...I go lie down where the Wood Drake rests in his beauty on the water, and the great Heron feeds.

I come into the peace of Wild Things who do not tax their lives with forethought or grief. I come into the presence of still water.

And I feel above me the day-blind stars, waiting with their light.

For a time I rest in the grace of the world, and I am free." - Wendell Berry, 'The Peace of Wild Things.

Birthday card for my better half. This is a sketch of him with his blackberry which is never far away.

A line drawing based on a painting from the Crusades. Drawn by a friend of mine from Changchun.

A collection of my Mum's shoes. I gave this to her for her birthday. She cried. I think this was a good thing?

the jail decided that the underwear l tore up was worth 20 hours of work. my usual rate is ~$100/h, that's $2000.

'Bob Barker' inmate underpants are all made in Bangladesh, btw.

Maybe I should have called this 'Tendonitis'.

just a little continuous line drawing (no lifting the pen from the paper!) from last night. it's a little distorted from lying in bed with my head on one arm, drawing with the other hand.

and that's part of what makes it look neat.

I wanted to avoid grids today and have some natural connectivity between my tangles, so I've worked solely with curved tangles here. I've been getting so much inspiration from the Zentangle Pool that I'm getting overwhelmed with new ideas!

Leonardo da Vinci claimed he felt daunted by the prospect of a blank page. So do I, yet I am equally fascinated by inventing various, elaborate ways of filling said space; attempting to compel viewers' eyes to travel across the entire composition.
