Taken in about 1967
BR 'Derby Lightweight' train outside Manchester Piccadilly station, in around 1967.
These units had first entered service in 1954, and the last ones were withdrawn from passenger traffic in 1969. Some survived in departmental use, and today (2023) one two-car unit and one single-car unit - and a two-car battery-electric version - have been preserved.
Restored from an unfocussed cyan-colour-shifted original..

An attempt at an ultra lightweight, mass production boxcar. I would love opinions.
It is completely hollow - built on a standard train base, the walls attach to each other and the roof holds it all together.

Comments are welcome =)

A Class 108 Derby 'Lightweight' 2-car DMU working the Table 105 10:18 Wrexham Central to Bidston service was recorded approaching Hawarden Bridge.
Visible on the right and on the far side of the River Dee is the former headquarters of John Summers & Sons Ltd, once a major UK iron and steel producer. This Edwardian-style building of polished red brick and terracotta complete with an imposing castellated central clock tower was opened in 1908.
The building was finally closed in 2006 and purchased by the construction firm Pochin three years later. It is a Grade II-listed building and following a decade of neglect and vandalism it has been handed over to a community foundation for eventual restoration.

Land Rover 88 Lightweight in Frankfurt am Main, Germany.
The "Lightweight" Land Rover was an air transportable version of the classic Land Rover used by the British armed forces.
One lens, one film holder, b&w filters, 10x8 camera. Lens is admittedly Nikkor-sw 150 on a sinar board, but still!! Goodness me… 4 mile walk ahead of me later possibly…
With everything becoming lighter and so called stronger in performance automotive and cycle products , its no wonder I would come across these Lightweight wheels for road bikes . They don't come cheap mind you at $ 3,000 a pair I was told , but they are the very thing in weight saving using carbon technology .

A Chester [CH] Depot based Class 108 Derby Lightweight 2-car DMU with DTCL 54490 leading heads away from Rhyl station while working the 11:50 Llandudno to Crewe.
Taken from Grange Road Bridge, this 1986 view shows the abandoned former carriage shed on the extreme left of the frame and the splendid LMS eight doll signal gantry that controlled the eastern approach to Rhyl. By this time the former Up Relief line had been lifted and a parcel of the land acquired to extend the storage facilities of the local builders' merchant Roger W Jones. On the right of the frame, the former Morley Road Cemetery had by then been converted into an open park area.

To say they were designed for heavy block coal trains, to see a 56 on such a light duty would once be unusual. On 23/04/19, Colas 56105 works the 5Z23 Cardiff Canton to Derby RTC stock move, with 37521 tailing the working. The location is just south of Peartree station in Derby.

BR ‘Derby Lightweight’ single-car DMU waiting at Bletchley with a service to Buckingham via Verney Junction, on a bright sunny day in August 1962. There is a brown leather satchel propped up on the right, and it is possible that this photo was taken by the driver..
The service to Buckingham ended in December 1966, when the branch from Verney Junction was closed. These units were all withdrawn by 1969, but one example – ex-departmental – has been preserved.
Today (2024) the station has been rebuilt and modernised, and all lines are electrified, and the first phase of the line through Verney Junction (now vanished) towards Oxford is planned to open some time in 2025..
