Over the weekend, this duo appears from out of nowhere. Lightweight, more hardcore versions of their respective models, this pair looks seriously good when parked side-by-side.

Metropolitan-Cammell 'Lightweight' units E79056 and E79272 withdrawn from service and stored at the former Ipswich depot (32B) on 2nd May 1971, pending collection for scrapping. Metropolitan-Cammell produced 36 of these two-car sets, the first railcars to be procured by BR from an outside contractor, seven units were used by the LMR chiefly on Bury-Bacup services, and the remainder were deployed to rural services in East Anglia, although some units subsequently migrated elsewhere for short periods to Scotland, Lincoln and for use on the Romford-Upminster shuttle. Metropolitan-Cammell developed what was to be their successful and long-lived Class 101 DMU from this 1955 design. The ‘Lightweight’ units were distinguishable from the later units by their cowling below the buffer beams and the MU jumper cables. Although a successful product, withdrawal of many rural passenger services in East Anglia in the 1960s following the Beeching Report, and their non-standard coupling arrangements saw their early withdrawal well before they were life expired. All units apart from one were taken out of service between 1967 and 1969 and were subsequently scrapped. One unit comprising two motor brake seconds (E79047-E79053) was selected for overhaul at Derby Litchurch Lane Works and was converted for use as a departmental Plasma Torch Research unit for the Railway Technical Centre at Derby and designated as ‘Laboratory 21’. This was also eventually scrapped, but at least saw further service until 1981.

...Massive Mammals

The bronze whale sculpture named "Tahku" is life-size. Although Tahku is about the size of an average adult make, it's a "lightweight" compared to some humpbacks.

The sculpture weight 13,000 pounds (6,000 kilograms), & at full length would measure 40 feet. (12 meter). A large female humpback can weigh 80,000 pounds (36,000 kilograms) & measure up to 50 feet (15 meters) long. :0

Lightweight Champion? Well yes, and no...yes, certainly in the hearts of those who know her...but in her future reality, not likely: her name is Juliette!

The title was derived from her position...and corresponds to a F64 challenge: something light.

Most freights off the branch from Yichun had at least one, usually two, and often three QJ 2-10-2s to get them over the short grade into Nancha.

On this particular occasion only a single JS was required which in fact made a nice change from the normal power on 29 March 1988.

JS5417 was one of a handful at Nancha that was fitted with high smoke deflectors and had no chimney cowling. The buffer beam and front steps had also been modified making the resultant engine look slightly different to a standard JS.

1950s First-generation 'Derby Lightweight' DMU - cars 975007 and 975008 - converted to a departmental 'Ultrasonic Test Train', seen at Old Oak Common in the late-70s.

The unit was later preserved, in the early-90s, as the only surviving 2-car unit of the class, but had to be stripped of asbestos, leaving an empty shell..

One of the cars was restored by 2004, with lottery funding, and work is now progressing on the other, at the Midland Railway Centre..

Today, this is a storage area for construction of the new 'Crossrail' route.

Restored from a grainy fungus 'blue-stained' original..

The Piper J-3 Cub is an American light aircraft that was built between 1937 and 1947 by Piper Aircraft. This one was built in 1944. The aircraft has a simple, lightweight design which gives it good low-speed handling properties and short-field performance. The Cub is Piper Aircraft's most-produced model, with nearly 20,000 built in the United States. Its simplicity, affordability and popularity invokes comparisons to the Ford Model T automobile.

The aircraft is a high-wing, strut-braced monoplane with a large-area rectangular wing. It is most often powered by an air-cooled, flat-4 piston engine driving a fixed-pitch propeller. Its fuselage is a welded steel frame covered in fabric, seating two people in tandem.

The Cub was originally intended as a trainer and had great popularity in this role and as a general aviation aircraft. Due to its performance, it was well suited for a variety of military uses such as reconnaissance, liaison and ground control. It was produced in large numbers during World War II as the L-4 Grasshopper. Many Cubs are still flying today. Notably, Cubs are highly prized as bush aircraft.

The aircraft's standard chrome yellow paint has come to be known as "Cub Yellow" or "Lock Haven Yellow".

This aircraft was at Popham Airfield which is an unlicensed airfield located 6 NM (11 km; 6.9 mi) south west of Basingstoke in Hampshire, UK. It lies alongside the A303 road.

The airfield has two grass runways, designated 08/26 and 03/21. Light aircraft maintenance facilities, aircraft hire and flight training on microlight and light aircraft is available from AirBourne Aviation Ltd.

Popham Airfield runs many different events over the year, including the Microlight trade fair in May, the annual Motorcycle Mega Meet & Vintage Aircraft Fly-in in August and the New Year's Day Fly-in.

Derby Lightweight Class 108 DMU comprising DMCL 53631 and DMBS 51925 arrives at Craven Arms, having just crossed the boundary from the London Midland to Western Regions. The 12:53 from Crewe would leave the Welsh Marches line just south of the station to continue the journey via the Heart of Wales (Central Wales) route to Swansea via Llanelli. The overall journey time for this all-stations service would be 5 hours.
