Winter Solstice 2009. Banishing Fenrir by waving flame is a traditional solsticial activity in Wallsend. Honest ;-)

Faffed about with the colour balance a bit more during RAW conversion and dropped the contrast right down, otherwise, straight out of the camera.

Outside St James' metro station, on the way home from work, practising fighting against light pollution on a 30s exposure.

It just simly won't get dark here atm. But hey, can't let that stop me!

Winter Solstice 2009, jpeg straight out of the camera.

This was originally part of a series of 3 shots, but I think in retrospect it stands better as a single image. So I've zonked the other two, hence some of the comments below might not make much sense anymore, but believe me, they still make more sense than the guff I'd posted with the set of 3 images :)

Steel Wool and Fairy Lights

my first attempt at doing light painting, pretty much. pretty bad.

Rory spinning glow poi. No post processing.

Austin and I have been trying different lights to see what we can come up with. This one has an added light of my neighbors head lights as she was going by our house.

We will try some different lights later.

After a long week at work staring at the computer, I decided to practice my light orbs in the backyard. This one was my best, although it is still a little wonky. Having a little stone on the ground to use as a centre point really worked. Also, despite having an expensive Lenser torch now, the best results were from a couple of cheap led glow sticks!

Some images I shot for my Photography 2 class.

The assignment was to shoot a series for Foam Magazine (in theory), and to give our own interpretations on "Our City Life".

Since I am studying abroad in East London right now, I am in a completely different situation as compared to my home (mountains, smaller towns/cities), I chose to explore ideas of alienation and blending in, as well as concepts of the individual amongst the masses.

Once again, I incorporated my now signature prop, Orson the glow-orb, as a symbol of an individual/me. The ambient lights/city lights are representations of the population/masses. Although Orson and the city lights are all essentially the same - lights, and we as humanity are all just people, there is an undeniable distinction when placed in a larger scope. Individuals make up the mass population, yet can be alienated and feel other or simply blend in, devoid of an identity.

I believe I'll shoot/edit some more images and include them into this series in the future...

P.S. This is my first official series of images I've shot on my new baby that I've waited for 2 years - Canon 5D Mark II! Needless to say, I am in love and feel limitless when shooting now! :) I also wan't to thank my new good friend/flatmate, Lily for being my assistant and guide when shooting that night! :)

So while currently between cameras waiting for my new Canon 7D to arrive I've really got in to light painting in a big way - which is tricky to then pursue without a camera!

So in the mean time I found an iPhone app recommended in a light painting group somewhere and have tried it out.

Considering I'd never tried doing orbs before, and considering this is with an iPhone and a fairly standard LED torch I'm really happy with this!

Straight out of the camera, no faffing about, so I'm happy with this one.

Note the polis carrier in the background.

So, my parents told me a lot when i was younger "Never meet anyone off the internet because they will turn out to men in their 30's!!"........And they were right, but at least i knew that from the start (Jeez, now i hope they aren't in their 20's, that could be offensive haha!)

Met up with www.flickr.com/photos/allanengland/ and www.flickr.com/photos/fellwalker1/ for my first light painting session outside of my own house. Great night out (from about 19:00 til 23:15 i think!?), surprisingly warm but we were playing with fire and i didn't have to travel too far!

Great to meet you both, thanks to Allan for being very generous with his Magnesium and to Mike for some hints and tips!

Single exposure and using my latest Orb tool.

A great day and night out with my best mate, Jack the dog. Walked 7 miles during the day then as it got dark we waited for the orbs to appear.

Same locaiton but a blue orb and a different white balance.

Haha, i lost my ability to do good orbs. They come and go, but smaller ones remain harder to do.

POTN is the forum we all meet and chat on.

Light orb at Bushiribana Ruins.

well, these are the last lights I was wanting to try. Now hopefully, if it doesn't rain, we can get out somewhere else this weekend and shoot some orbs

Taken at the local beach, in a spare half hour me and the orb had... Its been a busy week!!

These were alot of fun to try, but next time we'll have to try again when it's not -15c!

Slightly squashed orb straight from RAW.

Whilst I was making it, this drunken posh dude popped out of a doorway under the arch and when I'd finished, he enquired as to what kind of martial art it is that I was practicing. Eh? You wot guv?

Taking advantage of the nearly full moon and clear skys... Windy again though!

1st try @ making light orbs
